After seeing Thriller ik 4K I can not complain about T40.

We get New songs - i am very happy about disc 2 (and 3 even though I would love TGIM solo demo)

BUT 4K videos are what really has talen This release to the next level for me. Thriller was shokingly beautiful and great looking. Great convertion. Looks natural and great.

Lol my copy arrives 6 days AFTER release. Unless it magically shows up early, I can’t leak anything.

I said for a while that 4K videos are easily the best thing they can do, and after watching last night I was proven right. It’s absolutely insane & future proofs MJs art for future generations

My thing is this....what about bad, dangerous, history & yrmw shorts in 4k....like they need to come on with it! I need visions in true 4k. I can imagine what the other shorts will look like!

Man, we’ve had “Thriller” and “Beat It” in 4K for a full day and already people are demanding something else lmfao. Let’s just be happy with this for a while, yeah?

Just because something was shot on film, it doesn't mean it was edited on film. Most videos with special effects will likely have been edited on tape, meaning a proper 4k restoration would not be worth the investment - especially for an estate as stingy as MJ's.

1st of all...I've been demanding visions in 4k for years! Not just today. & the simple fact it took so long to do this. But what I was meaning was that if thriller & beat it look like this...It excites me to know what the others will look like in that quality. Don't come like that...do you not understand how this makes ppl feel to see 2 videos in 4k & wonder what the other 20something would look like. It's not a demand or complaint. It's a wish at this point!

I uploaded them to my quest 2 vr so I can watch on the app "big screen" which is a movie theater & different rooms like living rooms & stuff. It's mind blowing Watching on it. If anyone here has a quest 2 vr, we can add each other & have a live watch party together in the movie theater

I read a post on Twitter that basically breaks down why restoring MJ’s short films poses a unique challenge compared to other artists.

Long story short: if we’re operating on the assumption that MJ’s short films were edited on tape, remastering to 4K would mean locating the original film negatives, re-scanning them, restoring them, re-editing them, and recreating any visual effects from scratch. This could be expedited if they have the original edit decision lists (which detail what shots/takes were used and in what order) and the original CGI source files, but that’s a shot in the dark and, without them, bringing most of his videos to 4K would be a remarkably lengthy and costly process. That’s not even taking into consideration that the Off the Wall videos were shot on tape and can’t be properly restored, or that “Billie Jean” can only go up to 2K since it was shot on 16mm film.

Not to say that it shouldn’t be done, but there’s a fair reason to see why it probably won’t be, at least not in the immediate future.

Honestly, if they just upscaled the shots that have effects in them and have everything else be the original masters, I would be fine with that.

I guess the alternative would be that the Estate George Lucas-s them and knowing fans, they would NOT be happy with that.

The new version out is definitely from the master tape, it's beyond upscaling let's say version they had on YouTube. What we're seeing on Apple Music and Tidal is not true 4K, the only way we can really tell is another platform that zero descaling is involved... Even then with tape quality from the 80s is not the same as a digital 4K of today.

You can tell it's from the master by the lighting correction, without the master it's extremely difficult to pull items apart to show the depth you see. Also there's detail that was simply unseen before, upscaling copies takes what the programs see and enhance... These are details (blemishes in the skin, masks, that were nonvisible before.

What was the Off The Wall videos shot on again?

man the videos look awesome
hopefully this is the last time we see those shit AI "enhanced" versions
Lol some of them were out right dog shit but some actually tried and did the best they could with what they had. For instance this guy, his work is actually VERY impressive for not having access to anything needed to properly enhance these.

Tape (1/2" videotape, I believe).

This service specializes in restoring older fashioned tapes, is it really as hard to manage as believed?

There's really no reason for it not to be done other than them not wanting to spend the time and money, which is not an excuse in my opinion. They make enough money and let's face it they spend most of the time not doing anything.

I think it's less likely it will all be done in a timely manner for the reason stated above, though.
