Bass Players to Know: Tommy Cogbill
For those of you keeping tabs, it’s safe to say that I’m a soul music junkie. Motown, Philly Soul, R&B from Memphis and Muscle Shoals, you name it — I can’t get enough. I’m a sucker for listening to old records, reading books about the development of record labels such as Stax and Atlantic, and sewww.notreble.com
What a gang!@Agonum I grew up with this song, didn't know who the bass player was. So glad that's changed.
Wilson Pickett / Funky Broadway

Found this info online:
"Personnel for the track were Wilson Pickett (vocal); Spooner Oldham (keyboards); Chips Moman and Jimmy Johnson (guitar); Tommy Cogbill (bass); Roger Hawkins (drums); Bowlegs Miller (trumpet); Charlie Chalmers and Jimmy Mitchell (tenor sax); and Flody Newman (baritone sax)."
It’s Rainey. Weird to put Cogbill in there!Aretha Franklin / Rock Steady

Dunno what to make of this. Notes in the description tell me the bassist is Tommy Cogbill but Bass Player magazine tells me it's Chuck Rainey. It's a 2021 remaster but that's not gonna change the musician line-up! Or it shouldn't, lol. Awesome bass line, whoever is playing it.
Thank you so much. It was doing my head in. I didn't think Bass Player mag would get that wrong. I wouldn't be able to spot someone's playing style. Geezer Butler, obvs, and probably Billy Gould and Jean-Jacques Burnel but not anyone from back in the day. But it didn't exactly sound like Tommy. It’s Rainey. Weird to put Cogbill in there!
Totally! It’s Rainey. Weird to put Cogbill in there!
Edit: Cornell Dupree on guitar deserves a mention, too! What a groove indeed.
"Some things you just can’t live with. Just thinking about doing it, my gut reaction hit me so hard in the stomach. I knew I could never live with myself."

Interesting. I wonder how that line-up came to be. Singularly, in and of itself, it isn’t anything to raise your eyesbrows over, since these were highly sought after studio musicians. But the combination of all of these names, on the other hand – it could just as well be the credits for a Thriller track!Phil Ramone and Richard Carpenter
This guy always confuses me bc I always think 'The Ramones!' (who I never liked, lol) but it's a different Phil Ramone. This one was a recording engineer.
P.S. Was just checking those Discogs notes and noticed, on one of the songs, backing vocals are by The OK Chorale. LOL.God d*mn what a line-up! One would expect Quincy as the producer. Who was it?
