I think this discussion happened on another thread a few months ago, but it is all due to some issues:

The footage is owned by MJ, who hired and paid Patrick Kelly and his crew from his pocket to document the tour. With that in mind, the Estate would want a bigger slice of the pie.
The Victory Tour was a Jacksons tour, so they'd probably want it at least 50/50 and have it as a Jacksons release. However, besides the fact presented above, the setlist had more MJ solo songs than Jacksons songs and the Estate would want to put it out as a MJ release (or MJ and The Jacksons), something that they refuse to accept.

They did it for the This Is It single though.
 
it’s worth remembering that jermaine also had his own manager as a solo artist. that’s three managers in total; one for michael, one for the jacksons, and one for jermaine. I imagine that the latter owns the rights to jermaine’s solo set. it can get tricky..

the great thing about this upcoming documentary is that we don’t need a full concert. the songs michael performed from ‘thriller’ will be included, which were always the most important. hopefully they’ll be full length versions🤞🏽

I honestly believe that this documentary will be the definitive one that covers the entire era, and replaces all previous releases. it will be perfect for ‘thriller’ fans such as myself 💜

I’m torn on this issue.

on the one hand, michael’s race (at least in america) was an obstacle that prevented him from having the equal exposure as his white counterparts. this was even more evident during ‘thriller’, with mtv refusing to play ‘billie jean’. coke cola even hesitated on sponsoring the ‘victory’ tour because they felt that the jacksons had a limited appeal to ‘ethnics’ (their words). this was in 1984, the peak of ‘michael-mania’. imagine what it was like in 1979; music was segregated, and michael was labelled a black disco artist. the backlash to disco (which was racially motivated) affected him on a personal level. he spoke about how sad he was to see anti disco graffiti on walls, and he loved that the genre brought all sorts of people under one roof to dance. michael was already a legend for the work that he did with his brothers. as far as the ‘mainstream’ was concerned though, those days were long behind him, and he was a has been. ‘off the wall’ was the biggest album of the year, and the biggest ever by a black artist at the time. yet michael only won a single grammy for r&b performance. he felt slighted and vowed that it would never happen again. this is what inspired ‘thriller’.

highlighting this issue provides full context to the album(s). however, I agree that there needs to be a way to tell the story without putting words into michael’s mouth. this is where his previously unheard audio clips come into play. we will hear michael’s voice in a more candid way discussing the issue.

this documentary will be inspirational, and I can’t wait for it 💜
 
I highly doubt they will show more than one full song in the documentary… at the moment I even highly doubt they will show the documentary 🤷🏼‍♂️

Most likely, just the end of Billie Jean, beginning of Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' couple 10 sec parts from Beat It and that one Human Nature clip which was leaked. Someone who attended the screening in 2022 said that there was only about 5 min of concert footage in the entire documentary (Journey from Motown to Off The Wall had around 8 min). They also most likely won't release it on Blu-ray but just for streaming.

I saw the documentary in 2022. There was no full song from the Victory tour. Just a couple of parts from different songs. I only remember for sure that Human Nature was in it. The quality was beautiful!
 
I have decided to keep breathing until we get to see a high quality release of a Triumph and Victory tour concert. It is the only thing we know for sure that exists so one day we can feast our eyes on it, i’m confident.

Triumph was only shot on tape (see Journey from Motown to Off The Wall) but the Destiny Tour and Victory Tour footage we got to see was shot on film (Destiny 16mm and Victory on 35mm)

Damn it , forgot to add Destiny tour. Love to see a destiny concert of each leg as there were enough differences in the setlist to warrant a release

London (1st Leg) was shot on Tape (which got leaked in low quality) and Oakland (2nd Leg) was shot on 16mm film

I’ve seen London but I prefer American concerts as the crowds were “wilder”

Do you happen to have any concert info of 1977/1978? So little is known but they did some dates at least and a setlist is known For 78. I doubt we will ever see anything from these years

sadly no :( I really wish that we had more information about that period
 
it’s worth remembering that the version of the ‘thriller 40’ documentary that screened last year, was a prototype. one of the reasons given for the delay of release were technical; it wasn’t complete. the final product will be different to what was originally shown.

Technically, the whole negotiation with Coca-Cola would have taken place in mid-/late 1983. The Jacksons signed their deal with Don King on September 30, 1983 and the Pepsi contract was signed in November of the same year. And, not that it makes the situation better, but Coca-Cola did in fact propose a deal for $1 million, in comparison to e.g. Rolling Stone who directly declined having Michael on its cover in 1979.

But I do understand what you‘re saying. Racism was definitely a problem, even for Michael, and even in 1983, arguably the peak of his career. However, I feel like Michael was more lucky than others, even during the Off The Wall era and earlier, because he did cross over. Even during the Jackson 5 times he had plenty of white fans.

That is the #1 issue. People keep saying "It's coming" but they have never said it's coming *here*. Where are we supposed to watch this at?

ABC already ditched us, they boycott all MJ stuff. HBO is definitely who we're at odds with. Netflix is a snitch. Any others need not be mentioned.

So what, we want pay per view or something?
