Thriller 40th Anniversary

I’m torn on this issue.

on the one hand, michael’s race (at least in america) was an obstacle that prevented him from having the equal exposure as his white counterparts. this was even more evident during ‘thriller’, with mtv refusing to play ‘billie jean’. coke cola even hesitated on sponsoring the ‘victory’ tour because they felt that the jacksons had a limited appeal to ‘ethnics’ (their words). this was in 1984, the peak of ‘michael-mania’.

Technically, the whole negotiation with Coca-Cola would have taken place in mid-/late 1983. The Jacksons signed their deal with Don King on September 30, 1983 and the Pepsi contract was signed in November of the same year. And, not that it makes the situation better, but Coca-Cola did in fact propose a deal for $1 million, in comparison to e.g. Rolling Stone who directly declined having Michael on its cover in 1979.

But I do understand what you‘re saying. Racism was definitely a problem, even for Michael, and even in 1983, arguably the peak of his career. However, I feel like Michael was more lucky than others, even during the Off The Wall era and earlier, because he did cross over. Even during the Jackson 5 times he had plenty of white fans.

Distributor issues?
That is the #1 issue. People keep saying "It's coming" but they have never said it's coming *here*. Where are we supposed to watch this at?

ABC already ditched us, they boycott all MJ stuff. HBO is definitely who we're at odds with. Netflix is a snitch. Any others need not be mentioned.

So what, we want pay per view or something?

No promo or sht....lmao I hate the estate so much its funny now because like..... bruh wtf at this point

No no no please, Estate, stop making stupid anniversaries for Thriller album. Fans are pissed of already. We want to get anniversaries of other albums. HISTORY, INVINCIBLE, DANGEROUS! Where are anniversaries of these albums? Hello, Estate!😡

all the mentioned tracks are not present on the cd version of T40🤦‍♂️

michaeljackson What’s your favorite demo of a song on “Thriller” that was included on “Thriller 40” – is it the stripped-down demo for “Billie Jean”, the beatboxing on the “Beat It” demo, the group vocals on the demo of “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” or the completely different R&B slow jam demo of “P.Y.T.” that you like the most? Hit the link in stories to listen now and let us know in the comments:

But they were all already released on other projects. Even on spotify except for the P.Y.T. demo which wasn’t available on spotify but was release on The Ultimate Collection.
You're moving the goal posts kinda. Idk what that has to do with saying what's on the CD version. Anyway they've already did this with those demoes anyway, they've shouted out all those demoes. Basically a whole year ago but still. It makes more sense to emphasize Thriller and not the 40 as time goes on.

It is heartening to see superstars like Usher and Mary offer some public support of MJ post-Neverland. I still think such interviews are extraneous and unnecessary, but given the chaos of the last few years, it’s nice to see.

Looks solid. I’m more interested in the studio footage than anything. Plus, kudos to them for getting it on a major streaming service and not just tossing it on home media to die in silence.

To everybody who criticized and still criticize Spike Lee's docs and now are getting the exact same formula from a different director, accept my best regards.
Well yeah, I'll still criticise him and his docs and say that I'm probably not gonna be a fan of this one as well. Not really sure what the point being made here is.

I was referring to @AlwaysThere being soft ("but given the chaos of the last few years, it’s nice to see") when they've been one of the most critical of Spike's docs.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinions and tastes, but I don't get all the hate towards Spike. His docs are not flawed, they're just not what you're all looking for (behind the scenes, making of sort of production).

I'm so in love with all the 4k footage. The Victory Tour should be released just like this in full in theaters. It looks so good in the trailer. Hate they reversed some footage & it looks like the last show in one shot at the end where Michael is about to moonwalk. I love the ppl in the doc BUT I DON'T NEED TO SEE MORE TALKING HEADS ABOUT HOW THRILLER INSPIRED THEM. I just wanna get to the music & tour & more new information about mj wanting to tour for Thriller but Joe had other plans... unless branca is just talking again & man...Dec 2?? Lmao we really waited since Feb just to hear it'll be out at the end of the year literally in December like maaaaaaan...🤦🏿‍♂️...(let me thankful, let me be thankful) 🧘🏾‍♂️

I said that they’re extraneous and unnecessary, so I’m not sure how that qualifies as being “soft.” I said that in this specific case, it’s nice to see A-listers offering public love.

Whenever Spike does a documentary, the actual people who matter get second shift behind contemporary artists. Why is Questlove getting more airtime in Off the Wall than Stevie Wonder or Greg Phillinganes? Why is Chris Brown telling me his opinion on “Another Part of Me”? I think it’s completely valid to expect a documentary chronicling the making of an album to show more behind the scenes material than pow wows with Kanye and Mariah Carey. It’s fine if you enjoy them, but there are legitimate criticisms to be made regarding their quality, and I’m thrilled (no pun intended) that he’s gone for this one.

Looks the same to me so far as talking heads about how he made them wanna dance😒🙄
