"Michael", a biopic about Michael Jackson, is officially happening.

I know he did, but the whole thing with the Rabbi was probably one of the worst decisions he ever made, like, if he hadn't met the Rabbi a whole chain of unfortunate events wouldn't have happened, and everything he said on those tapes wasn't making him look good,

Michael
Release Date: April 18, 2025.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua.

Exclusive Footage Description From CinemaCon 2024:
Lionsgate closed out its CinemaCon 2024 presentation with the very first look at the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua. Michael’s own nephew, Jaafar Jackson, portrays him in the film. The footage covers all of the iconic eras from Jackson’s career, starting with his humble beginnings in The Jackson 5 with the hit song ‘ABC’ playing in the background. We then see a montage that goes from the Jackson 5 performing on television to Michael Jackson in his ‘Thriller’ era. We see Michael’s iconic white socks and black shoes as he’s dancing while singing ‘Bad’. Fans will be excited to know Jaafar Jackson sounds just like his uncle, nailing all the vocal cadences, when delivering dialogue.

Michael Jackson is then shown, in the late stages of his career after one of his accidents, with visible pale skin, long curly hair, a black fedora, face mask, and sunglasses getting flanked by security. He’s walking towards a car while a crazy crowd of rabid fans and paparazzi scream to get a photo, with some people even jumping on his car to get a glimpse at him. Cut back to his youth when Michael’s mom tells him, as she’s wiping a tear off his face, “You were never like everyone else.” We then get a close-up of Michael’s fingers snapping, performing ‘Man in the Mirror’ to a massive concert crowd. We also get quick shots of a young Michael signing thriller records with his short hair and iconic red jacket.

Then there’s a glimpse of Michael with his face wrapped up in gauze on a stretcher being led into a hospital — assuming this is the big Pepsi commercial incident. The trailer directly confirms that this biopic will address “the controversy” of Jackson’s career. The next image is of Michael on a balcony, which could be the baby dangling incident. There’s a quick shot of Michael sitting at a piano and taking a pill. We see quick glimpses of Nia Long and Coleman Domingo as Michael’s parents in his youth. The trailer ends with a shot of Michael in the white shirt/black pants combo performing in front of hundreds of fans. Jaafar Jackson nails all of the dancing in the footage shown and is seen in various layers of makeup as the film traverses the different stages of Michael’s life.

When did Michael ever perform in front of hundreds of fans??

Possibly when he was rushed to the hospital in 1995 after rehearsing for the HBO special?

Here we go, the Neverland permit has just been approved today! Only 4 days before the shooting is supposed to start. Now let's see if they recreate Neverland in its heyday. Will the Estate open its warehouse, bring back the gate, the statues and everything else? #MichaelMovie x.com/delamarregab/s…

Speaking of which. Nobody mentioned anything about casting for LMP?
Still waiting for LMP, Janet, Elizabeth, Debbie.

Jennifer Batten? Kenny Ortega, maybe? If they were going to include 2005 presumably they'd need someone for Tom Mesereau?

Ok se we know the film looks spectacular in the visual and sonic department which is not surprising at all, it was clear they were treating this as a big and epic production from the start.
Now lets hope the same will be said of the narrative and acting.

3 hours is not too long and it should be the absolute minimum considering we will have different stages of his life filmed. Each era they did needs time to breath, it can’t be rushed. You can’t for example talk about a non existent childhood (which i assume will be an important theme in the film) and then rush that era with just 10min of footage. The audience needs to be convinced he was living the life of a 30 year old at age 10. Even when we realize he truly had no childhood then we still can’t comprehend what it must have been like when hundreds of fans rush the car you are in or the stage screaming their lungs out. I would be scared Out of my mind

Nobody is going to watch it if it 3.5 to almost 4 hours long. People have busy lives, most normal people wouldnt go if its that long and the makers obviously know that. The film still has to make a profit.

In an ideal scenario, we would need that much time to fully show everything but that is not a feasible option.

You have to make people wanna go to the cinema. It has worked for a lot of films in the past. The Godfather, Lord of the rings, Avengers, Titanic, Avatar are all of the highest grossers ever (or most popular films) and they were all very long, not to mention a certain film called gone with the wind which feels like a marathon watch but has sold the most admission tickets of all time. The average blockbuster easily surpasses 2 hours and 15 minutes, I think people can make an extra effort for 3 hours.
Also there will undoubtedly be an extended cut for the fans at home, most movies have these nowadays.

If people binge watch 5 to 10 episodes of a series then i am sure they can manage 3 hours in a chair as well

PS yes 4 hours is too long for cinemas. Many films have been butchered by studios to get a more respectable runtime. Once upon a time in America is a prime example of this.

I'm not sure about that. A serious movie about Michael will be epic if it wants to be serious. Making it short and either rushing some periods would do it serious unjustice. People know that and with a proper hype and splendid visuals and music presented in a high profile trailer people will treat it as something special and they will take the time to experience this. At the end of it, when people went to see Michael in a concert, they didn't just book 2 or 3 hours on a busy day.

What about younger viewers? Are they expected to sit through a nearly 4 hours movie without getting bored?

If a film is too long it can take a serious nose dive in terms of quality and enjoyment. It has to be entertaining from start to finish. You don't want people wishing they had shaved off a extra 30 mins to an hour.

A 3-4 hour movie is a turn off.

For anyone that's concered that people might get turned off by having sit through a 4 hour film remember that this is the generation that binges multiple hours of TV shows on Netflix.
