It wasnt released as a single, it was just a performance song, at things like award shows and on tour.

Music videos were promotion for the songs that were released as singles. Their main purpose was to be played on tv when the artist could not be physically present.

Where there only music videos for singles?

Because TV was one of the main distribution methods for advertising. Music videos in essense were tv advertisments for the songs. People would see the music videos on tv and then go to music shops to buy the song on cassette, 7 inch vinyl or 12 inch vinyl or the album.

Not necessarily. Some singers/bands filmed music videos for album tracks that weren't singles. In some cases these were released on VHS as a "video album" like Michael Nesmith's Elephant Parts. Prince filmed videos for songs and never put the videos out at all. They're in his vault. In Mike's case, Liberian Girl, Speed Demon, & Leave Me Alone were not singles, at least not in the USA. But the videos were shown on MTV, BET, VH-1, etc. Madonna made a video for Justify My Love, which MTV & other music video programs declined to broadcast. News programs were talking about the video too. Lot of controversy just like her Like A Prayer video did earlier. So she released Justify My Love on VHS as a "video single", that sold fairly well at the time. If the video had not been banned, I doubt the video single would have been released.

Michael Jackson planned to release the 'Dangerous' song as a single accompanied by a music video.

Michael Jackson even started to create the choreography for that music video, initial shooting also began, but the child sexual abuse allegations against him broke out at that time which led to the cancellation of these plans.

As a matter of fact, those child sexual abuse allegations against him led to the cancellation of many of the singer's planned projects.

Liberian Girl and Leave Me Alone released as singles outside the United States and Canada, where they both went to number in multiple countries. Thats why they had videos.

Speed Demon was a segment of Moonwalker, like Smooth Criminal was. It was released as a promo single as part of Moonwalker promotion campaign, and the segment was shown as a music video.
