Since about two months ago and continuing up until now, I've noticed that bots have been consistently creating these threads. It’s happening so frequently that it’s hard not to wonder, what’s going on with that? Why is it happening

Well I guess that what they call progress, AI, automation and such...

Oh yeah... We live more and more in "the future".
I think eventually people will be forced to stop using the web (...)

Sometimes I wonder about it...

Reminds me of that "brilliant" idea from the CEO of Zoom who wanted AIs to replace employees in meetings... Just thinking about this idea projects a repeatedly self-linking graph in my head I haven't finished figuring out... Here's a cool-and-too-long video on the topic:

Also... Why do they all post in German? New international language?

To whoever knows how to get stuff done on the board, just autoban every user who tries to use the word "code" in their first thread. You'd solve the problem overnight.

It's getting to the stage where it's unenjoyable, and I'm thinking about not coming to the board for a month, then coming back to see if you've fixed it.

They got smarter. They started posting in English. They even included "For All Time" in one of their titles.

Do you think that they are reading this thread and therefore we are "training" them by criticising them?
Maybe we could convert them into actual "fans" and they will convince the Estate to release more unreleased stuff?

It's the future.

I think eventually people will be forced to stop using the web, just like they've been forced to stop using email and phone calls.
I doubt that . they will most likely just be forced to identify themselves .. ... so they can see who are not bots and who are at this point....''' Things would probably work much better like a genuine video/phone call.

It doesn't matter about identifying anybody. It will just be the sheer volume of "content". We're only months away from the point where bot-generated tweets outnumber human ones by 99:1.

Eventually bots will be able to generate more words per hour than the human race has written in its entire history.

And Facebook aren't gonna do anything about it, because it's in their interests to make sure you spend a minute longer on the site reading stuff than you did yesterday.

yes it does.

i can see where this is going and how your mind works richard.

Dont use twitter

Feels like we are being wiped out second by second..... humanity is at its own down fall ... plus they will be leaving it to us to re-write history for them .... by our curiosity

i dont use facebook so wouldn't know any of that. I dont spend hours on other social media I live in the real world unlike some.

Those were just examples. It doesn't matter about social media, it's every website with a CMS, ie literally everything. Every news site, every message board, every classified site, every Wiki, every map, whatever.

Just like you get spammed by billboards driving down the highway, spammed by posters when you go to the toilet in a bar, and spammed when you watch TV/radio/etc. But online there's actually no limit to the ratio of genuine content to spam.

I live in the real world unlike some.
That's what I mean. People will be turned off by swimming in a sea of bullshit. That's why nobody communicates by email any more, and why this week I got my landline disconnected.

I think there are feature to make things like "the X first posts of a user have to be validated by moderator". I would rather go that way.
The keyword/automated approach is interesting but my result in false positives...
Or maybe an automated approach with possibility to appeal could work.

... with the consequence being zero.

Like seriously, so a new user doesn't get to make their first post - what's the worst that can happen,?

I thought the idea was to ban the user if is first post contained a keyword. But maybe I misunderstood the fine-tuning of the idea.

The idea was savage tuning, not fine-tuning. Just wipe the bots out.

So what if somebody you've never spoken to gets banned? If they have anything interesting to say they can always re-register.

If nothing is done, this problem will get worse not better, with the result that lots of people leave.

Can they? I expect user ban also comes with IP ban and e-mail ban. I'm comfortable creating news e-mail addresses as I own my domain names, but not everyone is. Regarding IP, they would have to wait until they get a new IP or use a VPN, which not everyone has, again (and VPN may be banned too, poor idea, but they can).
Assuming they would try to re-join because some may find that false-positive ban to be abusive, or the process to be tedious, and just leave.

I think your initial idea is great but requires fine-tuning.

These spam accounts/posts are getting annoying now. @Gaz, please take action.

Can't you implement additional security measures for the registration process (e.g. "registration questions") in order to prevent automated form submissions by spambots?

Firstly, this is not the section to create a thread like this; the title 'Michael Jackson News and Discussion' is probably a bit of a giveaway, now moved to Help.

Second, can you post links to the the threads in question please.
