Prince Appreciation Thread - For Fans

Prince and the Clash were among those honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Grammys' Special Merit Award ceremony on Saturday.

Per the Grammy website, the award is presented to artists "who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording." Other recipients this year included Frankie Valli, Frankie Beverly, Dr. Bobby Jones, Taj Mahal and Roxanne Shante.

Jimmy Jam, a former member of the Minneapolis band the Time, whom Prince worked with closely, was present at the ceremony.

"He had the best work ethic of anybody I ever met," Jam said (via NME). "What that lesson taught me was that he saw me as better than I saw myself. I want to enlighten other people to their greatness."

Netflix has officially scrapped the 9-hour Ezra Edelman documentary, and made a deal with the Estate to do something entirely new, containing work from the Vault. Of course, arguably, this replacement work is going to airbrush Prince to remove the warts and all parts of his life.

I get that of course Prince and Michael were very different artists and very different men, especially given how while Michael was very straightforward and open, Prince was an enigma and intensely complicated, with contradictions aplenty. But the Estate doesn't want people to see those contradictions, which would enable us to better grasp him as an artist.

Ezra Edelman has revealed his fury over his Prince documentary being axed by Netflix after a dispute over its contents.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker spent five years on The Book of Prince, a nine-hour exploration of the late musician’s life. When Prince's estate objected to some elements of the completed work, Netflix canceled it and announced a new movie was being discussed in direct partnership with the estate.

“I can’t get past this, of the short-sightedness of a group of people whose interest is their own bottom line,” Edelman said in a recent episode of Pablo Torre Finds Out (video below).

“They’re afraid of his humanity. The lawyer who runs this estate essentially said he believed that this would do generational harm to Prince; in essence, that the portrayal of Prince in this film – what people learn about him – would deter younger viewers and fans, potentially, from loving Prince.”

He said that while the documentary did address darker aspects of Prince’s character, the result was a deeper understanding of his art rather than an overall negative view. He rejected the estate’s allegation that the film contained untruths.

“It’s a joke,” he said. “Here’s the one thing [the estate was] allowed to do – check the film for factual inaccuracies. Guess what? They came back with a 17-page document full of editorial issues, not factual issues. Do you think I have any interest in putting on a film that is factually inaccurate?”

Edelman went on to say that the replacement documentary would be “a hagiographic propaganda love letter… Are you going to learn anything about Prince? I doubt it. Are you going to learn anything dark about Prince? I doubt it. Are you going to learn anything complicating about Prince? I doubt it.”

He added: “We live in a culture… where the subject gets to dictate who they are to everybody. … You now have a lot of companies and filmmakers making deals with the subject, sanitizing their story.

“There are movies being made with subjects that have some say in how the story is told or are getting paid for the access, which to me is a no-no.” He reflected that the target audience “doesn’t seem to care or know the difference.

“It’s like they’re being served slop, and they’re getting used to the fact … I think that’s the bigger issue. [My] film about Prince, to me, it’s a full meal… it’s not something you can just like tear through. It’s tough at times.”

The film was likely inclined to speak on Princes brief liasons with younger women, and that is a pretty contentious subject to bring wider attention to.

With any luck they will concentrate on the music, and I hope, if possible his thought process [through other people's memories ,those working with him and those two ladys which were married to him ] whilst creating his artistry which if it is anything like the 1989 documentary by Ken Russell.. I think that will be a ....really beautiful interview [ sorry] but you know... I think it's a good thing personally...but what do i know about Prince and the legacy truly? so ...
so as a newbie i'd like that to happen...all for it.

Sign of the Times Deluxe Edition is really hitting lately. It's been kinda hard to listen for a while but right now I'm just getting back into it and loving it all over again.

I still need to check this out and I did purchase it too. It's so good that you can listen to it again.

Chaka Khan said an album of songs she co-wrote with Prince was on the way after red-tape hurdles had been cleared.

The singer reported that the unreleased material featured the pair working with Sly and the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham.

UNRELEASED #PRINCE SONGS WE HEARD AT CELEBRATION 2025 - THREAD

Before we begin - some of these songs will be familiar to some of you. Some have leaked in the past, but for the most part we heard them in better quality than the boots. Let’s go! 👇🏼

The session opened with a funky as hell untitled instrumental jam from Prince, Michael Bland, Sonny T and Tommy Barbarella. Classic NPG balance of funk, rock and jazz!

That served as intro, and then the playback of the 2008 acoustic version of “Free” which was just released on streaming so you’ve heard it! But hearing such an emotional guitar/vocal version in the Paisley Park soundstage was beautiful. I hope you all enjoy this version!

From this, we went into the studio version of “Shade of Umber” - if you know the live versions, you know how this sounds but finally hearing the studio version was great!

Next up - remember when Rosie Gaines used to sing the Aretha track “Ain’t No Way” on tours with Prince? Guess what. There’s a studio Prince vocal version with a killer falsetto, stacked harmonies, drum loop, piano and guitar, recorded in 1989. Fantastic!

Next - “Call of The Wild” - this leaked under an incorrect title of “9-5 People” a number of years ago. A heavy track thought to have been inspired by Led Zeppelin that was considered for Parade.

On the same 1985 cassette as the last track? A Santana esque early instrumental version of “The ? of U” heavy on the Latin percussion and noticeably faster than the version that would get released

Next up! “Beatown” from the early version of Graffiti Bridge. Very world building - you could imagine it as the film music when the characters are in that part of the city. If you think about songs like Coco Boys, Blanche, and It Be’s Like That Sometimes you’re in the right ballpark musically. It’s pretty light on lyrics but SO FUNKY.

Next was “A Couple Of Miles” - the jazz track recorded on 26th Dec 85. I think this has been circulating for a while but sounded massive in the soundstage 💜

Next was "Love Never Has 2 Say Goodbye" from 1997 which also leaked a few years back. I think a lot of people know this but if not it's beautiful post-Emancipation ballad.

We finished up with a soundcheck rehearsal take of “The Ladder” from December 84 which was absolutely beautiful.

Charles mentioned "You will hear these songs again" - guess we will find out more at the future plans panel! 💜

There's good news on the way for Prince fans who have grown impatient waiting for new releases from his fabled vault of unreleased music.

That's what Londell McMillan of Prince Legacy LLC announced Saturday during this year's edition of the annual Prince Celebration, which took place in Minneapolis and at the late artist's nearby Paisley Park entertainment complex.

According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, McMillan said a boxed set edition of 1985's Around the World in a Day is on the way.

Vinyl editions of the last two albums Prince released during his lifetime - 2015's Hit n Run Phase One and Hit n Run Phase Two - are also in the works. The estate kicked off the weekend activities by releasing a new acoustic version of "Free," from 1982's 1999.

Looking a bit further ahead, The Purple Stream reported that McMillan noted, "Next year is 2026 so everyone is going to see something from Parade." The 1986 album was home to the chart-topping smash "Kiss."

^ and yet many P fans are complaining. *smh*

The Prince Estate has even shadow dropped an unreleased acoustic mix of "Free" few days ago
