Sorry if this has been asked before. I searched the forum and couldn't find anything. I actually made the mistake of searching the word "overrated" and boy, did i find some harsh threads on here 😂

Anyway, what is a song that is popular with the general public and/or in the Fandom that you just don't get?

I'll start - for me, it's Speed Demon. For the life of me, I don't get the hype around that song. That is an instant skip for me. (Sorry, MJ, you know I love you).

What is it for you?

For me it's Liberian Girl. I understand the Music Video is great with all the A List actors, but the song itself I don't think is amazing. Mainly because if you compare it to the other hits on the Bad album, Leave Me Alone, The Way You Make Me Feel, Dirty Diana, Man In The Mirror etc it doesn't come close. Maybe its the 105 BPM for me. A GOOD song but for me its not comparable to the other Bangers on the Bad album.
 
Billie Jean doesn't blow me away like Thriller or Beat It. I understand that the rhythm is good and the lyrics are exceptional, because who wouldn't want to be seduced by a Billie Jean who makes everyone turn their heads? Michael is strong enough not to, thanks in part to his mother's advice.

It’s an insider, appreciated in parts of the hardcore fanbase & an underrated gem.


A popular MJ song which I don’t vibe with anymore is YANA.

I never liked YANA. Butterflies is a other one.

Didn't used to like Heal The World, but I like it a bit more 30 years later.
 
MJ liked to be innovative, his music covers such a broad range that certain songs will appeal to certain audiences and not to others. I think that was part of his genius, everyone can find something they like.
For me, some of the History songs were his best and worst. Always found 2 Bad, DS, and This Time Around not as nuanced as the other angry songs. Also, still don't understand Superfly Sister from BOTDF.
I would probably press skip for Speed Demon, but not for LG and YANA, I like the sound of his smooth voice on those tracks.
It's cool that he was always pushing his own boundaries when it came to music, even if we as fans did not always appreciate it.
 
For me it's Thriller, please don't throw me out of the forum 😂. Like... I see why it's genius and why the short film blew away so many people, but I just don't feel it (as much as other songs 😶‍🌫️ ).

I often compare things to food - I can see why a certain dish is creative, amazing, well composed, a masterpiece, etc. but if it's not my personal taste...same with music 💁.
 
Butterflies. It's really really boring IMO.

You Are Not Alone. A generic pop song that could have been sung by anyone. MJ does a great job with the vocals but it's not one of those songs that only he could have sung (I.E Man In The Mirror/Human Nature). Also the person who wrote the song has put a massive damper on it too.
 
You Rock My World

I don't necessarily think it's an awful song, and out of all the songs on Invincible it does sound the most like MJ's older songs and I can see why Sony preferred it as the lead single for the album, but at the same time I think it's too dull for my enjoyment. If you ask me, Heartbreaker is the best song to have come out of the sessions with Rodney Jerkins.

I think my fave song from Invincible has quickly become Threatened. I don't know if that was Rodney or Dr. Freeze but I think that song had such potential.
 
The Way You Make Me Feel.

I like the song, but there are other songs that I prefer to listen to over TWYMMF. I do like the opening though.

when you say POPULAR michael jackson song you think masses not fandom. Lets not be dense to be right. Speed demon is not a “popular” michael jackson song.
 
Someone mentioned that they changed their mind about HTW
I felt the same about YRMW, I could appreciate that it was catchy, but wasn't overly keen on it when it was first released.
Now I think it's great, just wish I could hear the strings more during the song, the strings really stood out in intro.
I think it's great that our relationship with the songs change over time. I think I can appreciate the effects he skillfully creates with his voice as I grow older. Maybe one day I will get round to understanding SS.
I also loved the slower version of TWYMMF, wish there was a full version, would've sounded incredible live.
I think the classic MJ songs are very hard to dislike, their brilliance shines through. I am blown away by SC whenever I hear it, but I wouldn't choose to listen to it, I would much prefer to listen to SPYHO, but that in no way takes away from the brilliance of SC. I still get mesmerized by all the classics whenever I come across them, especially if I'm watching them, he was always so captivating to watch.

In my question, I clearly stated popular in the general public or FANDOM. If we are only talking about songs popular among the masses, we are severely limiting Michael's catalog.

Why does this bother you so much that you are repeatedly coming at me completely unhinged over whether or not Speed Demon is or is not a popular song in the fandom? Obviously, you aren't a big MJ fan or else you wouldn't be attacking someone and calling them dense over something so trivial. Michael was a man that preached kindness and not unnecessary personal attacks.

Go outside, enjoy the day, & find something constructive to focus your pent up anger on 😂

Why did my calling Speed Demon a popular song in the fandom trigger you so badly? You've now written 3 angry messages to me about it 😂 It's not that serious. Calm down, dude. Take a Xanax.
