When did MJ tell Sony that he was leaving them?

I don't think it was before Invincible came out. Promotion for the album seemed to be going mostly well at first. "You Rock My World" did well both in the US and worldwide. "Butterflies" did well in the US, too, despite not having a music video. Sony didn't air a commercial for the album during the 30th anniversary broadcast, which was stupid of them, but they still planned to release singles from Invincible after the special aired, so I don't think they were actively trying to sabotage the album.

"Cry" was only released internationally because it flopped at radio testing in the US. It ended up flopping worldwide, too (and apparently, MJ was the one who wanted "Cry" as the second single following 9/11), and MJ worsened matters by choosing not to appear in the music video. He was probably afraid to travel post-9/11, which is part of why he didn't tour, but he was also unhappy with the music video's low-budget. Of course, supposedly he and the director agreed it was better for him not to appear in it. Regardless, it was seen as a lousy music video without MJ's appearance.

Despite the setback, Sony still intended to release "Butterflies" internationally as it was popular on US radio. The issue was that MJ refused to film a music video for it; he didn't respond to Sony's pitch as it would have been low-budget. Not wanting a repeat of "Cry"'s video where MJ didn't appear at all, Sony canceled the music video for "Butterflies". They also canceled the international single release of the song as they didn't feel it would do well enough without a video. "Unbreakable" was to be the next single, but Sony didn't want to spend $8 million on the music video like MJ wanted. MJ refused to film a lower-budget video, nor did he want to spend $8 million on a video himself (actually, his desired budget may have been even higher). Unable to comfortably make any videos to his liking, and upset over Sony's refusal to release "What More Can I Give" (the reason Sony didn't release was that song was because they didn't want it to compete with the singles from Invincible, as it wasn't part of the album. They might have released it later on had MJ stayed with them), MJ stopped promoting the album entirely and told Sony he was gonna leave them. With that, Sony pulled the plug.

I know Taraborrelli's book said it was due to MJ not getting his masters back in 2000 or something like that, but I dunno. If anyone sabotaged the album, it was arguably MJ. After his bad experience with the "You Rock My World" video (the director insulted him by offering to darken his skin and add putty to his nose), MJ refused to film videos that weren't to his liking. Not appearing in "Cry"'s video conveyed to Sony that he wasn't interested in promoting the album, which was exacerbated by his refusal to appear in "Butterflies"'s scrapped video. Sony wasn't going to put so much money in the videos after having spent so much on the album itself, so MJ refused to work with them. A record label is obviously going to stop promoting an album if the artist is actively refusing to work on their terms. @mj_frenzy

My belief is that MJ told them he was leaving in October or early November 2001 because they refused to release "What More Can I Give". This prompted Sony to scale back on promoting Invincible; they didn't bother airing a commercial for it during the 30th anniversary concert broadcast, they canceled the international release of "Butterflies", and they released "Cry" internationally, knowing full well it would flop after it failed radio testing in the US. "Unbreakable" was to be a single, but Sony didn't want to finance a high-budget video for it. MJ refused to film a lower-budget video, nor did he want to finance a higher-budget one himself. Unable to freely film any videos to his liking, MJ gave up on the album.

I think, that happened sometime after 30th annyversary concerts. Because before 9/11 Michael planned to go on tour. And after 9/11 happened, he said "i'm done"

But does it really matter? The most important thing, that never really considered Invincible as his real album. He wanted to use it as INSTRUMENT to get back his masters! I'm sure he planned to do this long time before Invincible release. That's why he never really contributed in wokring proces. He wanted to fool Sony, just putting his credits over songs and giving them to Sony. This man literally left abroad his best material, that he really was working on 😂

Michael was a genius

I don't think MJ was ever planning to tour after the bridge accident in 1999.

Oh yes. RIGHT. He was soooo sober! Yep. Definately!
He was high on September 7, but he was sober on September 10

That's just how MJ looked at that point in his life lol. Maybe he was still on something, but September 10 definitely went better than September 7 did.
NO NO NO STOP LYING DAMN! HE WASN'T SOBER DURING THAT SHOW! THAT'S IT! HE LOOKED BETTER WHEN HE WAS SOBER!

This is how he looked, when he was sober

Why even post a screenshot of him in the middle of a performance to prove he was high lol. A low quality one at that

And if he was high, then that goes to show he wasn't serious when he said he'd go on tour to Michael Prince.

I can't really blame Sony for not spending much money on any videos tbh; 'You Rock My World' and 'Whatever Happens' are the only songs from Invincible with some hit value imo and the 'You Rock My World' video turned out uninspiring and MJ didn't look his best anymore..

*Just my opinion/ I love Michael/ Don't kill me

That's not true!

These songs were not even written by MJ

First singles with videos should had to be those, which Michael really contributed.

That's why Unbreakable is only best choice for lead single

The Lost Children as second single

Speechless - third single

Heartbreaker - fourth

And only for fivth or sixth, they could use You Rock My World or Whatever Happens

Sounds like MJ had a tantrum when the album wasn't very successful. It all started from there.

5.4m worldwide in 2 months is alright.

If "Butterflies" was released internationally, and "Whatever Happens" both in America and internationally, I think it would have hit 10m. Especially if MJ performed at the 2002 Grammy's like originally planned, too.

He had to perform the lost children and speechless!

These were his songs!

Whitney Houston never wrote any songs and she's one of the most successful singers in history. I Will Always Love You was the 1st single from The Bodyguard soundtrack and it lasted longer at #1 on the Hot 100 than any single Mike was involved with. Whitney's version was much more successful than the original version by Dolly Parton, who was the writer

Then she is not a real musician. Real songwriter writes his song on his own!

One of the greatest songwriters Dan Abnormal once said:
"Co-writing is very different to writing. I’m not hating on anybody, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes"

And he was so damn right.

You better join Prince forums. He was, in your words, indeed a "real musician".

Prince did everything himself - singing, writing, composing, playing almost all instruments; he even did push the "record button" occasionally.

Enjoy your trip to PRINCE.ORG; meet there new friends, keep asking and driving'em nuts. Goodbye, Richard

I'm MJ fan, because 70% of his discography consists of his music!

But we have to remember, that Invincible, Thriller and Off The Wall will never be his best albums! Because it lacks of Michael Jackson himself!

Bad, Dangerous and History are absolute peak of MJ!

Bad album is peak of everything!

MJ wrote 9 songs of 11!

Arrangement, vocals, lyrics, melody - everything is done by him!

And what about Bad tour? Peak! Peak of everything!

Dangerous is his second best album. Yep, only 8 songs written by Michael. But they are really really important! Maybe even more important than Bad song!

History - third best album! Peak of album tracklisting! When you listen this album, it feel like you are reading an autobographic book!

Thriller and Invincible are just song collections. History - is masterpiece, pure art.
