"Michael", a biopic about Michael Jackson, is officially happening.

I'm finding it all a little bit strange now.

Is there an official statement or press release? All I can find on the Lionsgate socials is one line "Michael... In cinemas April 24th 2026" and a link to the Deadline article.

It all feels a little bit scrappy.

They are releasing this news more so for the industry, Deadline is the industry’s go to for news. Obviously fans too but they aren’t going to make a big deal and major announcement for this for the wider public until a trailer is ready, which I suspect will be around Xmas time with hopefully a teaser a few months before, maybe October. Everyone’s gotta stop acting like this is a big disaster, it isn’t. It’s gonna be great. Great team behind it. The estate having nothing to do with the release, marketing etc. It’s all gonna work out, everyone relax.

Once GK Films & Lionsgate came on, they are absolutely not going to be taking notes from the estate. Nor would such a reputable director like Antoine Fuqua or writer like John Logan. JB and JM are 100% not meddling in the film, its release or marketing. It’s release and marketing is Lionsgate. The estate has financed a large chunk but doesn’t mean that reputable film people will begin taking notes from them. It’s just shifted to a two part movie, why people are surprised that its been delayed is beyond me.

A decision has finally been made about the Michael Jackson biopic.
Lionsgate has set a release for April 24, 2026.

“Michael” will be one film, not two. It will likely be a celebration of Jackson’s music and avoid the legal troubles that plagued him starting in 1993.
The Antoine Fuqua directed film will cover the beginnings of the Jackson Five through Michael’s triumphs with “Off the Wall,” “Thriller,” and “Bad.”

The movie has been delayed as everyone involved debated what to release — a two parter, a film that covered allegations against Michael, etc.
But the best thing for fans and the Estate is to not address any of that. Michael’s music has overcome the craziness. As time passes, the legal difficulties fade from memory. If you’re interested in what came later, watch a decent documentary (not “Leaving Neverland”).

The movie also stars Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Michael’s parents. Other notable cast members include Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, and Derek Lu

Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew (Jermaine’s son) plays the King of Pop. The great John Logan wrote the screenplay. Other actors include Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Michael’s parents, plus Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, and Derek Luke.

The part with Jagger will probably be filler for those scenes about the Chandlers that were cut. Ouch.
This will not be a biopic, but a fairy tale.
I'll say it again, the current direction of the film will attract critics who will accuse the makers of trying to hide something.
Keeping quiet about the accusations had the opposite effect 30 years ago. They were just getting really big.

As much as I wish all of the allegations and what followed did not happen, at the end of the day, it's unfortunately a part of Michael's life. To pretend it did not happen is to ignore the opportunity to showcase Michael's endurance through such trials. IF this movie news is true.

At least, I hope that the originally filmed footage would be able to be seen at some point in the future.

I sincerely hope it’s two movies, and I’m massively disappointed and frustrated that they apparently won’t cover the allegations and later years. This was the big chance to finally show the public who still believe in the allegations what really went down, but nope, instead they apparently won’t and will let things like Leaving Neverland 1 and possibly 2 thrive in the media core that hates Michael. Just disgusting and sad

The Estate once again demonstrates absolute incompetence.
 
The film at this current time is a mistake. Should have waited until all court proceedings were completed. Absolutely no reason for the movie other than the Estate cashing in. If it ends up being a fluff movie then I will pass.
 
OK, that sounds strange, does that mean that the film just ends after the bad era? If that's the case, then that would be a huge disappointment. A biopic about Michael Jackson has to be told right up to his death in 2009. If that's not the case, then it really annoys me.

If this is the case I’m not gonna go see the movie. No way. We already have ‘An American Dream’ that covers this (minus the Bad era.)

I’ll pass if this is the case.

This is the biggest platform they have to finally adress these things. They can finally tell HIS side of the story. They have to be stupid to think that not mentioning it is gonna do this movie any favors. I think it’ll actually be more detrimental id they don’t.

That's exactly how it is. The absurd accusations are unfortunately part of Michael Jackson's life. Therefore, it must be part of the biopic in order to once and for all clarify things for the general public about these lies. The true story behind them deserves to be told. If you want to tell Michael's story, then you have to do it right and tell it up until his death in 2009 and not cut it off in the middle of his life.
 
They made their own bed trying to cover the 1993 allegations when it's well known that there was a settlement barring MJ or his people from talking about them

Then again didn't that shitty 2004 TV movie "Man in the Mirror the Michael Jackson story" cover them

Definitely crappy if allegations are totally avoided. I guess they're trying to avoid legal issues since Jordan Chandler and Gavin Arvizo are still alive?

Still, I wonder if you could change the names and get away with portraying it... or is that still not good enough?

Really sucks. We may have to rely on Jin Chohan's documentary for allegation stuff, but I doubt that'll get any coverage... damn.

Where has it been confirmed they won’t address the allegations? I personally think they will, they aren’t stupid enough to bring on the controversy by not addressing them.
