Latest on MJJC

"Michael", a biopic about Michael Jackson, is officially happening.

Michael, the 1 billion at the box office expectations....

Looking at the last handful of music biopics
Elvis: $288.7 million
Whitney: $59.8 million
Bob Marley $177.2 million
Aretha Franklin $32.9 million
Amy Winehouse currently $6.7 million but only just out.

Now Michael is obviously in another league in terms of celebrity but how confident are we really of reaching that 1 billion mark as fans seems to believe?

Hmm, I'm missing Bohemian in this list.
Plus the budgets of each movie. Isn't the budget for Michael like over 100M? Clearly they are targeting a huge income.

I think that was released before the pandemic. The box office in general hasn't gotten back to pre-covid levels yet, and probably never will since movies go to streaming in a few weeks after release and some the same day as the theater release. After 2020 very few movies have made 1 billion or close to it, when before Disney had 6 or 7 movies in 1 year that made over a billion dollars. Even the last 2 or 3 MCU movies haven't done that well and Marvel was easy money before the pandemic.

That does indeed sound like a guaranteed downfall for the cinema... Surely they must have done some background research for expecting a big income, otherwise they wouldn't be going all big like this. And they are, aren't they? I mean this isn't a cheap biopic, is it?

Not really, maybe in some cases. I know with the Tina Turner movie, Tina recorded new songs that were used for the soundtrack. She also re-recorded all of the Ike & Tina songs used in the movie. They used a session singer for Ike's vocals. I think because the sound quality of the originals would not work that well with modern movie sound technology. But it was reported that Ike visited the movie set one day.

I think that's kinda low compared to what action movies like Fast & Furious cost to make, movies with a lot of CGI. But it might be expensive for a biopic. I don't know what the average cost of one is.

Whitney had 2 or 3 TV biopics already and there were a few documentaries released around the same time as the theatrical movie. There's also the Bobby Brown biopic that was on BET and she was a character in that too. All of these probably cancelled each other out.

Allegedly. The online chat I saw a while back said she had confirmed this but I can't find any such confirmation. She's listed on IMdb and she's clearly on the set but who knows what role she's playing?

I understand why they are taking their time announcing the various actors that have been cast but I wish they would clear up this particular mystery.

You've made your feelings clear about this biopic and that's fine. Nobody is gonna force you to watch it.

At least have some respect for MJ and the huge career boost that this movie may have for his legacy, it could be incredible.

Excuse my potty mouth, but my mood is through the roof right now. I've had enough of seeing messages like these. And I'm tired of standing idly by and continue seeing them happen.

Why are you being so needlessly hateful and negative? And why are you acting as if Jaafar is some random impersonator who's only out to play this role for the money? 😐

Jaafar is literally a member of Michael's family. At least have some shred of respect for him and what he is contributing for Michael and his legacy. He is more than happy to pay tribute to his uncle in this performance, a tribute made out of love and respect. Jaafar has also known Michael personally. You never have. So who are you to even dictate how he should pay tribute to or portray his uncle??

If you're not a fan of how Jaafar looks as Michael, that's fine. If you don't like the idea of a biopic at all, that's fine. Biopics in general can be pretty divisive. Even I'm personally not a fan of most of them. But stop coming back and forth to users in this thread shitting on them and insulting them for sharing their excitement over this biopic. Stop making others feel like they're brainless or "clowns" for praising Jaafar's efforts to portray his uncle with grace. Especially in a thread SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE BIOPIC.

People actually wanting to relive some of the most iconic moments from the life of our favourite artist through the most beautiful art form, enjoy a well structured narrative of a 50 years story, while it appeals to the mainstream audience bringing new fans to the fandom and set the facts right for all those years of controversy??????? Apparently, to some people, none of that matters at all. 💀

People can have whatever opinions they want about this biopic, but I'll be damned if it's going to be dismissed as just nothing but Jaafar parading around in a costume of his uncle.

Not only do I have such a gripe over people being insulted over engaging in discussions about the biopic and being excited for it, but I also really have a bone to pick with people who blatantly disrespect Michael's family, especially his children, nieces and nephews. The people in Michael's family who Michael probably felt the closest to (besides his mother and siblings). That shit makes my ears burn.

As my mother would say: "Fix your attitude!"

What would we do without you Zin?

That's another things that excites me about this biopic. I love knowing that Neverland's been rebuilt for the set, although I'm unsure of whether it'll stay after filming there is done.

I have a friend in California who occasionally visits Neverland on special days. I'll be so happy if she gets to bear witness to Neverland in its original state. 💞
