Is Thriller a great album on its own?

The only reason Thriller was so successful is because of the music videos and MJ doing the moonwalk on Motown 25 lol

"Billie Jean" hit no.1 without a video and "Beat It" probably would've, too, but the only reason these songs are so ingrained in pop culture is because of the fact they were the first videos by a black artist to be played on MTV.

The song "Thriller" is only remembered for the music video that dramatically increased sales of the album. It wasn't even going to be a single at first.

"The Girl is Mine", "Human Nature", and "PYT (Pretty Young Thing)" were popular without videos, but nowhere near as much as the songs that had video.

What y'all think famalam

Do I think it's a great album? Absolutely.

I prefer Bad and Dangerous, but it's still amazing from start to finish.

Actually, most of the world have no idea about Motown 25, lol. It's just Americans, and I bet you the majority of them didn't actually watch it live.

Really even the music videos weren't that big of a deal in countries that didn't have MTV.

Actually, that part isn't even true. It just fits a narrative.

Huh? They're just great songs. Period. That's what I think.

Just dropping by to share this quote from OP on a separate thread. I’m 100% convinced he’s here specifically to troll and/or rage bait because I cannot fathom anyone saying some of these things with a straight face. (ā€œPoor man Toto songā€ as if Toto didn’t write it and contribute nearly all of the instrumentation lmfaoooooo)
Tbh Thriller arguably isn't a great album, either. The reason it sold so well was due to the novelty of the videos and Motown 25.

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'? Poor man Don't Stop til You Get Enough

The Girl is Mine? Trash lol

Thriller? Nobody gave a crap about this song before the video came out. It ripped off Rick James too

Beat It? Wannabe rock song

Billie Jean? Was lucky enough to be the first music video by a black guy to be played on MTV. And then MJ popularized the moonwalk to this song..

Human Nature? Poor man Toto song

PYT? Generic synth funk

The Lady in My Life? Generic R&B slow jam, MJ ain't even about that life

Lol You know what I meant

MJ is the main performer

Everyone else is in the background
