Lionel Richie Says Pal Michael Jackson Was Nicknamed 'Smelly' for Poor Hygiene: 'He'd Wear Pants Until They Were Unwearable'

I have been on the old gearslutz forums where some of his previous engineers and musical collaborators sometimes posted. They did say he during the busiest periods of recording an album he didn’t have the time to shower or even change clothes. He even asked one of the engineers to go buy underwear for him 😆 Also from another engineer who mentioned that one time MJ was hesistant to meet Brandy who shared the same recording studio at that time because he was in his own words “stinky” 😆. I don’t think these engineers would make up stuff like this. Anyway we have to put this into a proper context. MJ tends to only forego hygiene during his busiest or stressful periods. The rest of the time he is his wonderfully smelling self. :)

I appreciate the balance you are trying to bring. And yes, LR has been positive on the whole, and yes there are worse things going on in the world.

But for those who feel that this was in any way an appropriate share of a friend, makes me really question your experience of friendship. This was a degrading and humiliating share with the whole world about a personal detail of a friend, and LR has been in the business too long not to have known better. So the only logical conclusion to reach is that he is exchanging a negative MJ story for headlines for his memoir. I know it's the done thing, but doesn't make it right. And we expect it from the likes of PP, but expected better from the likes of LR.

As an isolated incident, it isn't the worse negative MJ story, but it does add fuel to the fire raging MJs public reputation as an overall gross personality.

There is a big difference between what Lionel wrote in his book and being sweaty on some occasions because he was working hard. That is normal and I don't understand why one would have to make such a big story out of it for a book. It's just very... let's say impolite and there is no reason to do that (only if apparently he doesn't have any other interesting stories to tell).

Maybe its just a very small part in the book but the news article makes it seem big.

No, I actually always thought Smelly was because he was smelly. Wasn't there a Katherine tale about his hippie phase when he didn't shower and decided to become a vegetarian in the early 80s/late 70s? I thought it was funny.

I thought about that option too for a moment (or - to ne precise - the option that they somehow twisted his words), but he still made something up and it makes Michael look bad.

Why not tell some funny or interesting stories instead? I mean... it's in a book, he surely had time to think about it, it wasn't just some story that slipped out of his mouth and afterwards he was like "hmm, maybe I shouldn't have said that". Weird behaviour.

I liked Lionel Richie, but I guess I was wrong. How DARE he 😡💔. Michael probably didn't have much time to even wash his clothes, and just because you wear the same cloths a lot doesn't mean you have bad hygiene. He can't have bad hygiene if his teeth look like that lol
 
I don't know about 'smelly' but one of his sisters (?) said that Michael always wore the same clothes and shoes at home until they were totally worn to pieces..
He was such a devoted believer he wanted to live a modest life, like Jesus (even Neverland was modest in comparison to other celebs, it was mostly for others) In the same way he was a vegetarian, gave away his belongings, didn't swear, celebrate etc.


Compare it to Vincent van Gogh. Before he became a painter he was very religious and tried becoming a priest in Belgium, he also gave away all his belongings, clothes, food, even his mattress..

Vincent van Gogh was also teased about this behaviour in his time btw, painter Breitner said 'Van Gogh had a short relationship with a prostitute who had a child. When I entered their house the child was playing on the floor and suddenly Vincent pointed to the blond child in awe and said 'he is just like Jezus' :LOL:

I do vaguely remember hearing about this. I read Katherine's book a long time ago but can't exactly remember details. And then, I also heard other rumors for the name back in the day. But like many here, I have always known the term to come from Quincy's nickname for MJ and MJ not wanting to use the word "funky." And that's what I'm sticking with!

That said, and say it was true (which I don't think to that extinct, I'll keep it real, everyone has an off day, Lol). But Regardless, Lionel could have kept that info to himself! If you and Mike supposed to be cool and you know how the media can be, then why even put that in your book? This ain't something we needed to know! 😑

In honor of Michael's good smelling self, "goes to spritz on some Tom Ford and the other scent he liked." ❤️😌

I just read that some of Lionel's fans walked out an event of his because they paid $600 and felt duped when it wasn't a concert but just to hear him talk about his book. 🙃

This here. It's not like Lionel Richie himself is going around advertising the "MJ stunk" story. This is an excerpt of him talking about his experience that PEOPLE chose to highlight because it's gonna get clicks on THEIR site and sales for THEIR magazine. This part could be just a small piece of a giant pie as far as Ritchie writing about his friend. And even when recalling the funky MJ days I imagine he's telling it with a grin on his face and not a scowl of disgust...I'm sure there are much more flattering things told about MJ in the book.

With the pattern I have noticed recently, I just no longer believe that people innocently tell questionable stories about MJ, and it gets coincidentally picked up by the media and spun negatively by the big bad press. I am now really starting to think people who need publicity know that a questionable MJ detail will be their quickest way to get into the headlines. Unless I see something else from LR memoir making it to the headlines, I see it as an exploitative and collaborative effort for personal gain, irrespective of the grin or scowl on his face when recalling the story. And it is perfectly reasonable for fans to question such behaviour as it directly affects how MJ is misinterpreted by the wider public, there will be many non fans who know nothing about the smelly jelly nickname and will take information like this at face value.
Friend or no friend, why on earth LR had any details about MJs underwear habits just baffles me. And why on earth he thought such information would be good to include in his own memoir is mindboggling to me.

Ol' Dirty Bastard was a person that died tragically like MJ, and while he was alive did things that made him look waaay worse than what Lionel described MJ as being at times. Picking boogers, walking around high out his mind without shoes, starting fights with people and not remembering he did it, burying buckets of chicken in the backyard, the list goes on....
And when people that knew him tell these stories they tell them with smiles and laughs because even though these are typically things that would make a person look bad those were parts of who he was that they just have to laugh about in their experiences with him.

I don't know who ODB is so don't want to comment on that, but we're talking about MJ, who has been the target of the most abhorrent non stop negative campaign by the media that overrides all facts and reason and has stripped MJ of his dignity time and again. Any friend would take that into consideration when choosing what to share and not actively participate in it or court such attention. And most friends wouldn't choose to share underwear habits of their friends to another person let alone the whole world. LR messed up, it's fine for some of us to acknowledge that even if you personally don't and feel there's no issue with a friend sharing ones underwear habits with the world.

Ps, sometimes I wish I shared a more nonchalant attitude when it comes to stuff like this, and good for you for not being bothered by this stuff.
But I think what irks me is the spreading of the misinformation, and the fact that he is no longer here to correct any false narratives. I have been a fan a while and I know my facts from fiction when it comes to MJ, but the average person does not and will eat whatever is fed to them. So as harmless as something like this may seem as an isolated incident, like I mentioned in an earlier post, it is contributing to the strategic practise of decades of mud slinging to bring down MJs character.

I think it might have been just a phase and then he was out of it after the late 70s or really early 80s. People have said so many outrageous and unfair things about him since ever, and to this day, so I think this is a really innocuous comment. Yeah, sure! It's Lionel, he could've made the headlines with some sweeter comment! But to me whatever. That's better than what other people say.
