So, it's been a little while since Mike’s death and I thought I'd share a surprising change that has occurred in my life. My wife has never really been a fan of Michael Jackson and has never understood the way I support him when negative stories are published or when people say stupid things as a result of the things they read or hear.
I remember when we were talking about celebrities having their own fragrances, clothing lines, toys etc last year. We were talking and I mentioned that celebrities releasing their own fragrances wasn't new and that MJ had done it in the 80s. Her response was "I'm talking about a big celebrity" (WTF?!). She wouldn't accept that MJ was a big celebrity then (i.e. last year) or that he was as big in the 80s as Britney/Beyonce/J Lo is today. Ludicrous, I know.
Also a few years ago, somebody asked us a question "who's the most talented, Michael Jackson or Justin Timberlake?" Of course I said MJ, and she said JT. Again, it's ludicrous but that's the way she was.
I married her anyway, despite these obvious faults. LOL
Anyway, since Michael Jackson's death, she has completely changed her tune. One of the first things she did was compile my MJ CDs into 3 CDs for her own personal use. She has never shown any interest in MJs music before this time. Her intention was to create a single CD compilation but she admitted there were too many songs and had to have 3 CDs to fit them all. She's been listening to those CDs since about June 26th constantly.
She has even called Mike the 'greatest entertainer ever', 'king of pop', and ‘legend’. She was glued to the memorial right by my side and became quite tearful during certain stages of the ceremony. Previously she usually made herself busy when anything MJ related came on TV or changed radio channels when an MJ song came on the radio.
She has been buying several newspapers a day since the death and has been learning so much about Michael Jackson that she never realised before and has begun to see him as a human being. She has commented on how nice he was as a person and how good he seemed to be as a father. She used to criticise how he made them wear masks in public, but after seeing a private video which showed Mike's kids going to the cinema with a family friend (without MJ) and without masks, she was super impressed. She conceded that he had made a good choice in the way he gave them freedom that other celebrity kids don't have.
Another really important thing is that she has seen first hand over the last couple of weeks how bad the media is. She already understood how bad papers like 'The Sun' and 'The Mirror' are, but she's now realised that the rest aren't too good either. She was furious that the Sun reported that Paris was 'pushed' in front of the microphone, when it was obvious to anybody who watched the show that that was not the case. She was furious that 'The Sun' published fabricated autopsy results, and when they tried to make out the memorial was 'tacky', 'bizarre', or weird. It's not just the sun, other papers have been saying all kinds of things and misquoting people left right and centre too, but she knows that they talk crap and is ignoring it. Because of her new interest in MJ I have finally been able to show her both sides of the story. I have shown her events that are misrepresented in the press. I have shown her interviews that result in the interviewee being misquoted in the press.
So far she isn't being taken in by the negative stories that have been creeping out since his death (I hope that won't change in the future) and has a sympathy for the way he was treated in life.
This is an encouraging sign, and one that I hope has been repeated in thousands/millions of homes across the world.
RIP Mike.
