I think people need to listen to the multitracks more. The grit you hear in Bad is there for Thriller. The only thing that isn't is that nasal sound that became prominent during Dangerous, but it creeps up from Bad onward. This is very clearly due to the rhinoplasties, but male voices also tend to settle a little as well, which likely made his voice just a tad deeper as he approached his 30s.
