Cirque du Soleil's 'Michael Jackson ONE' Premieres With Jackson Family Members, Celebrity Attendees


LAS VEGAS — One was not enough.

Less than 20 months after the debut of the first Cirque du Soliel show paying tribute Michael Jackson, comes the second: "Michael Jackson ONE" Cirque president Daniel Lamarre said he'd planned two Jackson-inspired shows "from the first day we got the rights from the (Jackson) estate," with the first production, "Immortal," delivering a stadium-sized touring concert and "ONE" a more intimate affair – something closer to what Cirque du Soliel usually serves up. It's a multimedia extravaganza that often flies high, but never loses sight of its inspiration.

Saturday's world premiere attracted celebrities including musician Justin Bieber, as well as actors Neil Patrick Harris, Allison Janney and Alfre Woodard. Also in attendance were Michael Jackson's brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie, the latter noting that most of the Jackson family would be inside the theater for the premiere except for Michael's daughter Paris, who, on June 5, was taken by ambulance from her family's home and hospitalized.

"She's going to be OK," Jackie Jackson said. "She's getting better."

The brothers said even less when asked about the family's wrongful-death lawsuit against concert promoter AEG Live, which the family claims hired Conrad Murray, the doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Michael Jackson's 2009 death.

"We can't elaborate on that, because it's still ongoing," replied Marlon Jackson.

Following a dramatic week of courtroom testimony surrounding the death of Michael Jackson, the brothers seemed relieved to be revisiting Michael's life and work.

"ONE" "is all about the music" said Marlon Jackson. "This is part of giving back and sharing his legacy."

"ONE" also gives Cirque another crack at producing the ultimate Jackson tribute show.
Some heavyweight media outlets gave "Immortal" lukewarm reviews (The Hollywood Reporter, and the Los Angeles Times among them), and even Cirque president Lamarre admitted the production was being "tweaked" throughout its North American run.

"ONE" director Jamie King commented, "I think the questions with ('Immortal') was, `Was there enough Cirque? Was there enough Michael' There's where the confusion (was)."

"ONE" is very different," continued Lamarre. "It's a total immersion. So, people are going to dive into the universe of Michael Jackson."

Despite mixed reviews and initial production problems, "Immortal" was a box-office smash. According to Forbes, it was the highest-grossing tour in the United States in 2011 and the second-highest in 2012. By the time it traveled overseas, Lamarre said, "Immortal" was greatly improved and, "I cannot wait to bring back `Immortal' (to North America) for people to realize how good a show it is now."

Prince Michael, Katherine Jackson and other members of the Jackson clan represented the family without Paris Jackson.


Several members of the Jackson family were in Las Vegas on Saturday to honor the late King of Pop at the opening night of "Michael Jackson ONE," the new Cirque du Soleil spectacular.

Leading the famous family at the sold-out premiere was family matriarch Katherine Jackson, who arrived with Michael Jackson's sons - Prince Michael Jackson and Blanket Jackson.

Also in attendance were Michael Jackson's older brothers - Tito, Marlon and Jackie Jackson.

Noticeably missing was Paris Jackson, the "Billy Jean" singer's 15-year-old daughter, who remains hospitalized after attempting suicide earlier this month.

"She's going to be OK," Jackie Jackson said about Paris. "She's getting better. She should be out soon."

&#8220;We love her,&#8221; Marlon Jackson told E! reporters. &#8220;After all that she&#8217;s gone through, losing a father... that&#8217;s hard on a youngster. So she&#8217;s staying strong.&#8221;

On Saturday, the teenager's mother Debbie Rowe also tweeted an update to her followers.

"My daughter has asked that I extend a huge thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers and support," she wrote. "She is strong like her father."

Rowe even tweeted to actor Neil Patrick Harris about the Cirque du Soleil show, telling him "Paris wants to know how you loved it."
Harris, Justin Bieber, Allison Janney, and Spike Lee were among other celebrities reportedly on hand for the premiere event.

The second Cirque du Soleil show about Michael Jackson comes four years after his death in 2009.

The Jackson family is currently in the midst of suing concert promoter AEG Live over the circumstances leading to the musician's demise, claiming they neglectfully hired Conrad Murray - the doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

"We can't elaborate on that, because it's still ongoing," Marlon Jackson told AP reporters at the show.

It was a night for royalty in Las Vegas.
Prince Michael Jackson, son of late pop superstar Michael Jackson, escorted Remi Alfalah, a Kuwaiti princess, to the Saturday night premiere of Michael Jackson ONE, the Cirque du Soleil tribute showinspired by his father.
The young couple met at their private school in Sherman Oaks, Calif. She is a member of one of the wealthiest families in Kuwait.
Prince Michael, 16, and his date were joined by most of the Jackson family.
Matriarch Katherine was there as well as Michael Jackson's youngest child, Prince Michael II, 11, who goes by "Blanket." Paris, 15, was not at the premiere. She had been admitted to a hospital June 5 after she hurt herself with a knife and took as many as 20 ibuprofen pills.

"She's going to be OK," Michael's brother Jackie Jackson said at the event, according to an Associated Press report. "She's getting better."
The celebration was a break for the Jacksons, who faced a week of emotional courtroom testimony in the case of a wrongful-death lawsuit against concert promoter AEG Live, which the family claims hired Conrad Murray, the doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Michael Jackson's 2009 death.
Prince Michael took to the witness stand Thursday and his testimony offered a rare glimpse into life with his dad. About the pressure on his father as he prepared for his upcoming world tour, the teen said: "He would say, 'They're going to kill me. They're
