That's also a great analysis by TSCM on the misleading and scripted editing in LN, it's great Taj picked up on it.

To think about how many people said in the beginning that Safechuck was the more "believable"...

Obviously he wasn't, it's just that Robson's story was already questioned and not really believed by the time LN aired, while no one really heard of Safechuck outside the fan community and his story wasn't yet that known and dissected. Because of that it was easier to believe him as opposed to Robson, not that he was indeed more believable. It's sad to see how easily some people fell for the emotional manipulation.

BTW "Collative Learning" on youtube did similar comparisons after LN aired: "evidence of multiple interview takes", this and his other videos on LN are also recommended viewings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TQ9Tpc_-NU

I'm surprised by the extent of the editing used to pull together the narrative. YES I know editing like this is often done with TV/film, but an honest documentary needs to tell an honest story, and with the editing in Dan Reed's film the final result is not authentic. It is manipulative. It is contrived.

I had my suspicions based on the number of cut aways etc that were used, but I didn't expect this extent.

An honest documentary with compelling testimony from an abuse survivor can be most powerful when it uses long shots of the victim talking. Just telling their story, their way. This film is not that, and it's disturbing that TV /film critics were so eager to praise what is in fact a poor effort. not only that but the Emmys were willing to damage their reputation by awarding it in a documentary category. The only thing outstanding about this film is the audacity of it.

I don’t think any of those critics have actually watched the entire thing. I believe, part of the reason Reed chose to make it 4 hours long is to ensure journalists won’t watch it in its entirety and instead copy whatever the accompanying press release says.

does anyone know what is going on with this fan (black shirt) form the 2005 trial? i forgot his name but he was litetally fighting for Mj in front of the courthouse every s.i.n.g.l.e day. Is he on social media?

Yes good point. If TV / film critics spend their lives watching many shows/films in a week, do they really have time to watch a 4 hour documentary?? Probably not. Not unless they have a particular interest in seeing MJ brought down. Them NOT watching it would actually go a long way to explaining why they all say very similar things and seem to be completely unaware of the specific issues in it. It would also explain why they don't respond to any criticism of their "opinion" - because they have nothing to back it up!

I think he was called CJ? I have no idea what he's up to these days.

Exactly this. People usually have different opinions, so if anyone had actually watched that whole thing, their reviews would have mentioned different details, small things that stood out for them personally. The absence of such details, in my opinion, is a hint that they were just lazy and copied whatever was handed in to them to write.

Yep, genuine storytelling is very important concerning the authenticity of a documentary (especially if it only relies on the credibility of its witnesses instead of facts). Re-taking a scene for a greater emotional impact may not seem to be a big deal but it is: having to resort to gimmicks questions the intentions of the makers.

The general public may not be aware of this but there's no way a professional wouldn't notice the manipulations. Pro-LN critics and the Emmy award were bought, and the public is way too easily duped. Both facts are alarming.

There's actually a US romantic comedy-drama Broadcast News (1987) dealing with a very similar (although much less severe as it's not about supporting a lie) case of manipulative editing and how it eventually leads to lose credibility.

Good ol' 80s, when romantic movies were built around dissecting journalistic ethics, haha.

Found a clip on youtube of the actual scene (it's a spoiler if anyone's interested in the film):

And that's HBO's worse nightmare!!

I'm sure somebody in the HBO Boardroom has suggested that HBO just pay The Estate off, thereby making this case go away. But alas, HBO is in too deep now.

The stockholder who took UMBRAGE at HBO greenlighting this "mockumentary" was correct to take UMBRAGE, in my opinion. I wonder how many others felt/feel the same way.

Michael's on FIRE this week. Just like (on an unrelated topic) David Pastrnak and the Boston Bruins are on fire this month.

To think about it it's not clear at all what are the benefits for HBO in participating in LN.

The motivation of the others is clear: W&R want to profit from their "victimhood" and pressure the Estate, for Reed it's fame and possibly money, Oprah and the blue ticks are doing it for attention and some kind of payment (financial or career wise), but for HBO there's actually more to lose than gain. Then why?

BINGO! I tell some of these fans stop thinking the few people u know who may trash MJ are the majority, MOST PEOPLE know it BS that is why the media push so hard (the media wont put pro MJ people on camera). Even with MJ, what child avocate groups wanted him ban? NONE. Any others who put up a big fuss? NONE. Who put up a fuss? THE MEDIA who have always been bias against MJ because he did not be what they wanted him to be. And who care what a few Mj haters think. ALL celebs have haters even all of us as people.

Though public perception of Michael Jackson has become even more divisive since the release of the HBO documentary Leaving Neverland — which resurfaced sexual abuse claims against Jackson earlier this year — the legendary musician’s 1982 hit “Thriller” seems to have survived largely unscathed.

As Halloween approaches, towns across the United States have hosted “Thriller” walks and parades as an homage to the song’s music video, which features Jackson dressed up as both a werewolf and a zombie. During the video, Jackson leads a group of zombies in the famous “Thriller” dance.

On Saturday, November 2 the city of Macon, Georgia held their “13th Annual ‘Thriller’ Parade.” According to the website, the two-hour parade featured “100 zombies of all ages” who performed the “Thriller” dance together at 9 p.m. Similar events were held in Lexington, Kentucky, La Crescent, Wisconsin and Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Jackson’s two sons, Prince Michael and Blanket “Bigi” Jackson, also hosted their third annual “Thriller Night” costume party with the Heal Los Angeles Foundation — an organization which was founded to further the cause of Jackson’s Heal the World Foundation and improve the conditions of those in Los Angeles — on Saturday.

As recently as last year, “Thriller” remained the top Halloween song, according to Billboard’s charts. Billboard collected the data by a formula blending digital sales, radio airplay and streaming, as measured by Nielsen Music.
Earlier this month, Billboard reported that streaming increased 22 percent in the 31-week period following the documentary’s release. On the other hand, radio airplay of Jackson’s songs decreased 32 percent in the same period.

Leaving Neverland was released in January and focuses on the stories of two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who claim that Jackson sexually abused them both as children. Prior to his death, the star had repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, and he was acquitted in a child sex abuse case leveled against him in California in 2005.

Still, the documentary had a lasting impact on Michael’s legacy; several radio stations took Michael’s hits out of rotation and the star’s 2,700-acre Neverland Ranch (now renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch) was put on the market at 70 percent off its original list price.
Though a musical based on the life and career of Jackson, titled MJ, was cancelled ahead of its anticipated Chicago run in response to the documentary, Variety now reports that it is set to open on Broadway in August 2020.

The only division is the media did not get what they wanted. This writer is full of it. Also, it was those FEW stations who removed MJ based on rush to judge (now they got his music back on which she fails to say). There was no overwhelming outcry from the public (there maybe have been one or two trolls to call to get a reaction). And Neverland Ranch is just gone back to the original name before MJ brought it and the sell was slow long before which I am glad because I hope the family will buy it back. Today was a good day and MJ music was played all day here in my city.

I agree with what you said. Neighbors were blasting the Scream playlist. Kids watched the Thriller at school and were ecstatic. A new generation LOVES Michael and his legacy will live forever.

Yeah, 'Leaving Neverland' completely flopped. All the PR, all the campaigns, paid for promotion and 'Thriller' is still the biggest thing to happen at Halloween 37 years later.

You just love to see it.

Dear members,

Please make sure that the conversation in this thread remains on topic, which is the LN documentary.
MJ Estate earnings for 2019 and the popularity of "Thriller" during Halloween are not on topic, unless they are directly linked to the topic, in some way, by the poster's comments.

Thank you
