Rosberg to BMW, Kubica to Ferrari
Seven races into the 2008 championship, F1's annual 'silly season' has found a higher gear.
The latest gossip from Italy is that Nico Rosberg, Williams' German driver who was courted by McLaren at the end of last year, has now triggered the interest of BMW Sauber.
BMW's existing driver, the young world championship leader Robert Kubica, was asked by the newspaper La Stampa if he endorses the idea of farewelling Nick Heidfeld at the end of 2008.
"For me it wouldn't change anything," the Pole said. "It doesn't matter if it's Nick or it's Nico. My team-mate is only one of the 19 drivers I have to beat."
"With regards to contracts, this is not my job so I leave it to others."
It has also been suggested recently that Kubica's quick and consistent form this year may even have stirred the interest of Ferrari.
Fascinatingly, the 23-year-old does not deny that it is most drivers' 'dream' to move to the Italian squad.
"And if I am not mistaken, in Italy you have the saying, 'things come to those who wait'."

I would like to see Kubica in Ferrari but after Kimi's retirement. I hope it won't happen till the end of 2010 or 2011!

Here it is Kimi's column - Pre-French Grand Prix
A great desire to win again!
I don't remember when I had such a great lust for winning! The team had prepared a car, which was able to be strong on all the tracks, but it didn't go well during the last races. We especially had different problems during the last two races.
I don't like looking back and think about what happened at the last race. I don't carry bad thoughts with me, because that would just make me lose time, as you can't change the result anyway. It's much better to concentrate on the upcoming GP and try to get the best result possible.
The last two races were a disappointment, caused by different problems. But I know that Ferrari has taken a great leap forward on this track compared to last year. It's a shame that the points we were able to gain do not reflect our real potential, but I think that we'll be very competitive on the upcoming street tracks at Valencia and Singapore.
Now we're heading back to Europe to tracks, which have been built to be used by racing cars. I think that things will look really different at Magny-Cours, compared to the last GPs.
The smooth surface of the French track, its demanding corners and the quick changes of direction will underline the characteristics of the F2008. It was here in France last year that my season practically started all over again; and this is what I need now, after the two races with no points.
I like this track and I think that it's perfect for our car. I think we'll be competitive and that we can go for the maximum result.
All the races are important and one point can make the difference, like in 2007. This year will be an equally balanced Championship and that's the reason why you always need to bring home something.Kubica is leading the standings and, apart from the first race, has always collected some points.
Hamilton will start further back, due to the penalty. But you should never underestimate McLaren: we have to give our best to keep them behind. We'll bring some new technology and here the Team is giving its best, but that is what also our competitors do.
Over the last days I had the possibility to chill out a bit, although I took part in some marketing events.
It was great to spend some time by the sea with my best friends and I could also watch some football matches: I don't have a preferred team but I really like to watch a good match!
Kimi looks very confident and determined. It looks that he had some great relaxing time, he spent some time near the see (so we saw HIM on that boat) and he watched some matches also!!! Can you believe it? I didn't know that he likes to watch football also. I always thought that he doesn't like football at all. I don't know why.

Bernie full of Alonso and Kubica - Two drivers better than Hamilton
At least two of Lewis Hamilton's key rivals would beat the 23-year-old British driver in the same car.
That is the belief of F1 Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone, who told The Times newspaper that he ranks former double world champion Fernando Alonso as the best current driver on the grid.
"If he was still in a McLaren he would be showing Lewis the way home - I don't think there is any doubt about that," Ecclestone, 77, said.
Bernie said he sympathised with Alonso, who moved back to Renault this year, after he fell out so spectacularly with McLaren as rookie Hamilton's team-mate in 2007.
"I never asked the guy - I'm going to ask him one day - whether he was told (by McLaren) he was number one.
"Because if he didn't ask and he wasn't told, he would have assumed he was. Having a guy that's never been in a F1 car in the team with him, he'd expect to be number one wouldn't he?"
"And that's what the problem was. When he found out, although he should have been number one, of course he wasn't," Ecclestone added.

A lot of people were saying this but the pilots and teams proved that they were wrong. It's very exciting, more exciting when it was obvious that Schumacher will win every race. For example I haven't watched it from 2001 till 2004 at all. I was kinda addicted before 2000 and now I'm more addicted than ever before!!! :yes:unk:

The Spaniard's closest grid ally, Robert Kubica, recently predicted that he and Alonso would have "a lot of fun" if they were paired together next year.
"BMW was a team that was in an ascending phase last year and they have confirmed in 2008 that it was no fluke," Alonso, who currently drives for Renault, is quoted as saying by the Spanish newspaper Diario AS.
"They have become the third big team with Ferrari and McLaren, and Robert is a great friend of mine and I'm glad he's fighting for the title."
"But you never know if your teammate is your friend or your rival. I think we're going to continue on our own paths," he added cagily.
Double world champion Alonso, 26, has made some notable driving errors of late, but he also commented on the errors made by his former McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton.
"They don't surprise me," he said.

Well, I think that for Lewis this really is a "normal" year. There must have been some luck with him last year and now we're probably seeing his true talent. So I agree with what Alonso said.
^^^I agree with it also that's why I posted this article. I hope this year he won't be that lucky. He has a lot of time to prove his talent. There's no doubt that he's very talented of course.

It means that reigning world champion Kimi Raikkonen's 2008 license cost
230,000 euros.
The German specialist magazine Auto Motor und Sport reports that the
Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA) is requesting an urgent meeting
with FIA president Max Mosley prior to the forthcoming Silverstone race.
If Mosley does not agree to lower the cost of their superlicenses, the
drivers are reportedly prepared to strike.
An unnamed proponent of the threatened strike action said the FIA's fee
increase is particularly harsh for drivers like Robert Kubica, the new
championship leader.
"He is not yet earning an awful lot, but his license costs nearly a
tenth of his income," the driver said.
OMG! That's a hell of a lot money - 230.000 EUR from Kimi for only
one year.... that would be enough for my whole life!

As the drivers and media congregate at the Magny Cours circuit on
Thursday, a few scattered clouds will fill the sky, according to local
reports.
Friday will also be cloudy but dry.
But on Saturday, there is up to a 60 per cent chance of rain for the
afternoon, when qualifying for the French grand prix is scheduled to
take place.

Felipe Massa - 2nd: "It was a good day, apart from a slightly tight neck which I began to feel this morning: so as not to take any risks, I chose to avoid doing too many runs of several laps. I therefore concentrated on the car's set-up, working with both types of tyre.
"On the softer ones, it seems to be a little bit harder to find the right balance, but we must take into account that today, as usual on a Friday, the track is still dirty. Everyone suffered a bit with graining on the front tyres, but tomorrow the situation should improve. We must study all the data we have gathered to prepare as well as possible for qualifying and the race."
Kimi Raikkonen - 3rd: "I am happy with the way things went during these two free practice sessions. We got through all our usual Friday job list, working mainly towards the race. Of course we don't know how much fuel our main rivals were running, but I get the impression we are very competitive.
"Maybe I did not get the most out of the first lap, but I am happy with the balance of the car. We tried out this new system for a Safety Car period and I think it could be a good solution because it puts everyone in the same situation and that way,you can't be penalized just by unfortunate circumstances."
Luca Baldisserri: "Because Felipe was suffering with a stiff neck this morning, we slightly modified the two drivers' programmes from the usual ones. The Brazilian concentrated on defining the best set-up on the car, while Kimi also had to tackle the task of evaluating the behaviour of both types of Bridgestone tyre available to us. "We are happy with the work we did today: the F2008 seemed to be going well on this track and that means we can be cautiously confident for the rest of the weekend."
Overall not bad, though I would have expected Kimi at the first place of course. He's happy with the car so I hope there's nothing to worry about. I try to be optimistic!:clapping:

Felipe Massa - 2nd: "It was a good day, apart from a slightly tight neck which I began to feel this morning: so as not to take any risks, I chose to avoid doing too many runs of several laps. I therefore concentrated on the car's set-up, working with both types of tyre.
"On the softer ones, it seems to be a little bit harder to find the right balance, but we must take into account that today, as usual on a Friday, the track is still dirty. Everyone suffered a bit with graining on the front tyres, but tomorrow the situation should improve. We must study all the data we have gathered to prepare as well as possible for qualifying and the race."
Kimi Raikkonen - 3rd: "I am happy with the way things went during these two free practice sessions. We got through all our usual Friday job list, working mainly towards the race. Of course we don't know how much fuel our main rivals were running, but I get the impression we are very competitive.
"Maybe I did not get the most out of the first lap, but I am happy with the balance of the car. We tried out this new system for a Safety Car period and I think it could be a good solution because it puts everyone in the same situation and that way,you can't be penalized just by unfortunate circumstances."
Luca Baldisserri: "Because Felipe was suffering with a stiff neck this morning, we slightly modified the two drivers' programmes from the usual ones. The Brazilian concentrated on defining the best set-up on the car, while Kimi also had to tackle the task of evaluating the behaviour of both types of Bridgestone tyre available to us. "We are happy with the work we did today: the F2008 seemed to be going well on this track and that means we can be cautiously confident for the rest of the weekend."
Overall not bad, though I would have expected Kimi at the first place of course. He's happy with the car so I hope there's nothing to worry about. I try to be optimistic!:clapping:

Piquet P1 as drivers complete differing programmes
As ever, it is hard to read too much into the Saturday morning practice times as some will have attempted a simulated qualifying lap with virtually no fuel on board in preparation for rounds one and two of qualifying, while some of the expected front-runners will have carried race fuel on board in preparation for the final pole position shoot-out.
Nelson Piquet, aiming for a top ten start in his Renault, set the pace in the 60-minute session this morning as he recorded a best lap of 1:15.750s. The time is the second fastest so far this weekend and will have been set with fresh tyres and a relatively low fuel load on board.
Mark Webber lost the first half of the session, presumably with a mechanical problem on this Red Bull Renault, but late in the session would vault second fastest in the RB4, just 0.009s slower than his Renault rival.
Sebastian Vettel has been on fire all weekend long in the Toro Rosso Ferrari and this morning posted the third fastest lap of the session, less than a tenth off the ultimate pace. The German youngster will be targeting a top ten position in qualifying should any of the expected front-runners slip up.
Nico Rosberg set the fourth fastest time while he and the Williams team look to try and make the best of what will be a tough day given the ten position grid penalty that will be imposed after qualifying. Kazuki Nakajima was 15th fastest.
Kimi Raikkonen was the fastest of the expected front-runners with the fifth fastest time in his Ferrari. The Finn recorded a best time of 1:16.003s to pip the Toyota of Jarno Trulli in the final minutes of the session.
Lewis Hamilton, like Rosberg will be looking to limit the damage his grid position penalty will inflict this afternoon, as he set the seventh fastest time in the leading McLaren Mercedes. Team-mate Heikki Kovalainen was 13th fastest. Looking at Hamilton’s time, it seems he is not going to gamble and go light in an attempt to start the French Grand Prix from 11th position.
Sebastien Bourdais set the eighth fastest time in the second Toro Rosso ahead of Felipe Massa who was almost a second slower than his best Friday time indicating a relatively heavy fuel load on board the F2008. David Coulthard rounded out the top ten in the second Red Bull Renault.
Timo Glock was 11th in the second Toyota ahead of Fernando Alonso who has shown so well in qualifying trim in the last two Grand Prix. Over at BMW Sauber and Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld were just 14th and 18th fastest but are expected to be firm top ten qualifiers this afternoon.
Jenson Button led the way on this occasion for Honda with the 16th best time just seven-thousandths of a second ahead of team-mate Rubens Barrichello. At the back, Giancarlo Fisichella set the 19th best time in his Force India Ferrari ahead of team-mate Adrian Sutil.
So we have seen a session of varying strategies this morning, so the lap times perhaps do not reflect ultimately what we will in qualification for the French Grand Prix.
