LOS ANGELES – A doctor who had been hired for a dream job as Michael Jackson's highly paid private physician now has his reputation in tatters and his future on the line as he faces a preliminary hearing to decide if he will stand trial for involuntary manslaughter in the death of Jackson.

The hearing for Dr. Conrad Murray, a Houston cardiologist who also has a clinic in Las Vegas, is set to begin Tuesday — just days after a prosecutor said he expects the defense to claim Jackson killed himself.

Murray, 57, had been hired to help Jackson prepare and to accompany him on his European comeback tour entitled "This is It."

But Jackson died between rehearsals for the show, and Murray is accused of gross negligence when he administered the powerful anesthetic propofol, which Jackson had been demanding to get to sleep.

The criminal case, with its expected focus on Jackson's longtime prescription drug abuse, could undermine his estate's efforts to rehabilitate the pop star's image after his death on June 25, 2009.

Managers of the estate have sought to burnish his legend with the release of a concert movie using rehearsal footage from the ill-fated show. They also released a new album, "Michael," featuring songs he left behind.

But testimony at the preliminary hearing is likely to open doors they preferred to keep closed.

In a last-minute twist, Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said he expects the defense to claim at a possible trial that the sleep-starved Jackson killed himself by using a syringe to self-administer additional propofol when Murray left the room.

"I do think it's clear the defense is operating under the theory that the victim, Michael Jackson, killed himself," Walgren said last week at a separate hearing. "They don't want to say it, but that's the direction in which they are going."

Defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan refused to comment on the prosecutor's remarks. The issue was not expected to arise until trial because the defense doesn't plan to present any evidence during the preliminary hearing.

Prosecutors will contend propofol is only supposed to be used in hospital situations for surgery, and that patients given the drug must be constantly monitored. Experts are expected to testify at the hearing that it was reckless to administer the anesthetic in a private home without proper equipment.

If convicted, Murray could face as many as four years in prison and the loss of his medical license. Already in financial distress, he also faces a wrongful death lawsuit by Jackson's father.

Murray has pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer has said that nothing he did should have harmed Jackson.

An autopsy report found Jackson died from an overdose of propofol. In a statement to police, Murray acknowledged giving Jackson the drug and other sedatives to help him sleep then briefly leaving his bedside.

Cellular phone records show Murray made at least three personal calls around the time Jackson was stricken.

Murray's lawyers are seeking tests of residue found in two syringes retrieved from Jackson's bedroom. One was attached to an intravenous bag and the other was broken on the floor.

Thirty prosecution witnesses are scheduled to testify at the two-week preliminary hearing before Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor.

If the case does go to trial, many legal observers have wondered if an unbiased jury can be found in the case of Jackson, one of the most idolized entertainers of all time.

His death at the age of 50 was one of the most shocking passings of a music giant since Elvis Presley died in 1977. Drugs were involved in both cases.

The Jackson family members — mother Katherine, father Joe and a number of the famous siblings — plan to be in court every day, bearing witness and projecting their grief.

Also expected to attend are Jackson fans. They have been a constant presence at previous court sessions with T-shirts, placards and buttons demanding, "Justice for Michael."

Linda Deutsch is turning a tabloid with this comment:

The case isn't even about that.. The case about involuntary manslaughter and what Murray gave MJ that night and his negligence. How in the hell is it going to focus on his 'longtime' drug abuse when there is no evidence that he abused anything? I still don't see any other doctor charged so I doubt they will be testifying as to what they gave MJ. So what is Linda talking about?

The first bolded part....Michael is gonna be tried for something that he admitted to and got help for long ago..

The second bolded part...yeah they are gonna try and make Michael look a bad as possible..I dont even want to think about the stuff that Murray might know about Michael's personal life that Might come out....it heartbreaking.

The third bolded part....I wonder if they will let fans in the courtroom?

well you must remember that the judge will not even allow all irrelevant crap in. And Murray obviously didn't know much about MJ's medical history because if he did he would not have been giving him all of those benzos. Besides don't forget that Murray told AEG, Ortega and Dileo that Michael was healthy. As his personal physician he should've known if MJ was healthy or not, so he will look like a liar if he suddenly says that MJ wasn't.

The bolded, that is my feeling too, but I know that Murray's team will try to bring the nonsense in. If they try to claim Michael injected himself, they better have some good facts to back it up, which they cannot based on the autopsy report. Further, remember the fool claimed what he gave Michael and the minutes given when he was questioned by the police. I wonder if he forgot about this. Obviously the reporter does not know much about the report either.

:mad:murray said himself that he gave michael medicine to sleep and then left the room for 10 minutes and then it happened :(so your telling me that michael woke up to give himself medicine that would kill him with three kids to bring up I DONT THINK SOOO

I just don't feel that Michael wanted to 'die' If he was ever 'suicidal' (and not saying that he was.) he wouldn't have done this during the 2005 trial - which he did not..so I don't get Karen Faye and Co. saying what they said on the 20/20 'After Life' on June 25th 2010 etc. It sounds like they didn't have faith in Michael.. I think Michael saw in the last week he had loving fans and he was ready for the show - He performed and blew everyone away in the last days then gets home and well.. you know the rest. No way he would or could inject himself.

we have to reamin strong ,we know michael had problems with drugs in 1993, he said that to us ,he even sang about this ,but now he was focused and not an addict.he had problems sleeping and dr murray only made that worst!michael didn't killed himself, the doctor killed him!the autopsy was very clear about that!

Linda disappoint me. She was the only reporter with some credibility.

Someone would have to email her. I think we can educate them about the facts. She was the only sensible reporter during the trial. Unfortunately she is contaminated by the garbage from other reporters and that disgusting Jackson family (hello Janet).

I don't think they are saying MJ killed himself on purpose. But that it was an accident.

I found a likely complete address of Linda, but not the e-mail.:banghead

If that was the case (Which I am highly doubtful about) the fact still stands that Murray did not take the proper precausions/ steps in keeping with a safe environment for this type of medical treatment.

Yea, Linda is highly repescted in the journalistic field so its a bit dissappointing that's she's included side comments that are not relevenat to Michael's death, but we can all pretty much predict that her speculations on past drug use are exactly what Chernoff will use.

She's been wrong before a la Billie Jean's paternity claims (and was called out by TMZ who noticed she was taking notes ,smh)

I have no idea what KF said, but in my opinion MJ was NOT ready for the show, because simply he was not feeling well for weeks suffering from insomnia. Mj was on Propofol for at least two weeks before his death, which means he was NOT well.
Ortega today proved in court that fact , but before he used to say opposite.

Murray's deference strategy is different. They will say that Murray did not know about MJ previous drug history, which is BS. Once Murray already said that and they will follow this line. You cannot avoid "drug use" subject.

exactly.. Murray claimed he had no idea about MJ's 'problems'. Murray is the one that started the problems in my opinion. Him administering propofol to MJ daily for 6 weeks made MJ sick. MJ was fine before that

murray had mjs records from 06. he knew of any issues from his history
