'Lip Synch Battle Live': Hailee Steinfeld, Laverne Cox, Taraji P. Henson & Neil Patrick Harris Tackle the King of Pop

Neil-Patrick-Harris-Performs-Smooth-Criminal-_-Lip-Sync-Battle-billboard-1548.jpg

“When it comes down to it, I’m just looking to have a good time. We’re honoring Michael Jackson and I know that nobody will ever – no matter how good they are and no matter how hard they try – be better than Michael Jackson. So as long as I go out there and have a good time, that’s all I’m trying to do.”

Those were the words of a champion, aka actress/singer Hailee Steinfeld, on Thursday night (Jan. 18) before she took the stage to shake her assets and mouth along to one of the King of Pop’s most iconic tunes as Lip Sync Battle kicked off its season 4 with a special broadcast from Hollywood’s Dolby Theater dubbed Lip Synch Battle Live: A Michael Jackson Celebration. Though the three additional contenders – Empire's Taraji P. Henson, Laverne Cox, and Neil Patrick Harris gave it their all, Steinfeld was crowned the winner. And she did it all while under the influence of a nasty cold.

“I’ve been thanking God every second of the day that this is a lip sync battle and that I didn’t have to sing,” chirped the 21-year-old, who was noticeably losing her voice, on the pre-show red carpet.

But Steinfeld is a trooper. She pulled through in a big way – nailing Jackson’s signature crotch grab and rolling around on stage under puddles of rain -- and ultimately went home the proud owner of the show’s sparkly belt for her instantly iconic take on "The Way You Make Me Feel."

Prior to taking the stage, Cox told Billboard that every part of her body hurt from her extensive rehearsals of “Dirty Diana.” “I’m really trying to give a great show!” she said, of her week long preparation for Thursday’s big show. But lip synching a Jackson song isn’t the only musical project that The Orange is the New Black star has dabbled in.

“I can’t believe I’m telling you this,” she says, with a grin. “I actually recorded a song last summer and I shot a music video for it in December. And I’m probably going to release it soon.” Cox describes the tune as a 90’s throwback and says it features only herself on the track. “No one has asked me to record music. I’ve been writing songs my whole life just for fun. I had an idea for a song and thought it would be cool to record,” she added. “I was hanging out with a friend and I told him and he’s like ‘we should record it.’ I was like ‘why?’ And then we did it and I was like ‘Oh and maybe there should be a video,’” she says, of how the endeavor came about.

But that doesn’t mean that Cox will be releasing her own album anytime soon. “I honestly think it’s going to be just the one song -- because it’s so hard and so much work,” she states. “New respect for musical artists. New respect. It’s a lot of work!” Besides, she was way too busy working a killer leather skirt and working the stage amid plumes of smoke, dancers and aerialists during her dirty "Diana" performance.

Henson, who loves to sing but said she "missed the bus" on exploring that side of her talent was looking forward to her Lip Sync Battle performance and the chance to be “a rock star for the night.” And, shocker, she was, tearing up the stage in tight leather pants and a red leather jacket for a killer cover of MJ's legendary "Beat It.'

Harris was bouncing around the show’s red carpet, attempting to psyche himself up to hold his own alongside the 67 professional dancers that would soon be taking the stage. The A Series of Unfortunate Events star affectionately referred to his appearance on the show as something that “is singularly done for a bucket list.” While he is no stranger to the stage, he explained that he never thought he’d have the patience to make a professional go at music.

“My wheelhouse is much more magic mystery theatrical based. I can’t imagine an album that I would make that a year later when it came out that I would want to then sing those songs for a full year on tour and then on morning chat shows,” he said. Still, Harris is not completely closing the door on the opportunity. “You never know what circumstances will bring. Tony Bennett could call and then you’d have to say yes,” he quipped.

All that stage time came in handy later in the night, when he slipped into a white suit and matching fedora for a perfectly choreographed, shoulder-snapping run through "Smooth Criminal."

I scrolled down to the comment portion cuz I want to look in here.. I have not watched it yet.. it's DVR'd.. is the winner mentioned in this thread? lol trying to see if I should stay away for now..

I watched this live last night so this might contain "spoilers" for those who have not watched it yet.

One thing that was odd to me was the seemingly lack of promotion for this thing as the only way I even knew about it was just by catching the post made by the MJ facebook page the day of. Just had to throw that in there. I would think they would have done a tad better job of promoting it but perhaps im just looking for a reason to nitpick them again. Its just frustrating.

Anyways....I really did not know what to expect. Ive seen clips of the show online and enjoyed it for what it is but Ive never sat through an entire episode. It was well put together and what I loved the most is that you could tell everyone involved were truly honored and were truly having a great time, so that was great to see. I loved i the beginning when they were playing "JAM" and you could see LL was trying so hard to not dance hahaha.

Of the four I think Neil's was the weakest personally. The set was incredible and I'm glad he even managed to get the lean in for Smooth Criminal, but it just felt like he wasn't really doing anything but standing there. It wasn't bad, its just in comparison to the others it didn't hold up imo. Laverne's Dirty Diana performance was good, I think the intro with the mirrors was a great little touch but I feel bad that her stage lift kinda failed on her (it apparently got stuck and she had to climb out, thats at least according to Neil afterwards).

Now if you ask me which was the best, I'd say it was easily Tarji's. First of all that set was awesome and I love that they had a spray painting effect of Michael on the side of the building. It looked really cool! In my opinion she really tried the most to stay true to Michael's performance and video for Beat It and that is why I enjoyed it the most. She had all of the moves, and even little ones that diehards would instantly recognize. I truly felt that she should have won this thing....which brings me to Hailee. Now the messed up part is I think Hailee did an excellent job for The Way You Make Me Feel even without the ending. The ending while hot (hey im a heterosexual guy what do you want, haha), felt unnecessary and to me it gave her a cheap advantage in the voting. It worked but it still felt out of place to me and I think the shock value of it is why she won especially since her performance was the last one you got to see.

Honestly, I'd say its worth a watch through if you can find it in full. Like I said, the best part to me is seeing how compassionate everyone was for Michael and his music and his legacy. It wasn't corny or bad like I expected it to me but a nice little tribute that I'm sure would have been neat to experience in person. Oh, and yeah.....I kind of didnt pay attention to the MJ ONE cast's performance. It kind of felt just there....not that it wasn't any good but it was a bit of an afterthought after Hailee just robbed the show lol.

Check it out people.

Hopefully this on the UK soon. Can't find the MJ One part anywhere!!

Not availabe in my country.

LLCOOLJ.@llcoolj

Thank you for watching and celebrating Michael with us !!! We love you king ? Much love to @caseypatterson @chrissyteigen @matadorcontent and our entire @LSB family!! Salute to our new home @paramountnet!! ? Get ready for Season 4 of #LipSyncBattle !!

LSB is a lot of fun and was such a huge hit that it moved from little obscure cable channel to one you have to pay for.
It started small and now the sets, costumes and dancers are incredible. Spending lots of money on that show.
Can't believe I forgot to have my sister in law Dvr it for me. :(

Hopefully MJ sales will get a boost because of this event. It looks good and I'll check it out soon.

^ that's exactly what I came in here to say.. watching the lipsyncing.. as an MJ fan just reminds me what these celebs don't have that MJ did.. lol! they tried, and was nice to see MJ love...

So what I took from it is, hey an TV time for MJ, how will this equate to sales and hits?

Thanks, I think it was really a nice tribute-Show.

As a person who has never watched the show, I think it was entertaining and worth the watch for Michael's fans. The winning performance was the best to me too and it was cool to see everyone hyped up. (The only thing I didn't like was to see Oprah's face complimenting Michael ¬¬ even if for a second).

I finally got to see a repeat this week and I really liked it-everybody was super complimentary (actually raving) about Michael and the 4 numbers were great. The sets, costumes and choreography were fantastic-those backup dancers really change everything.

I noticed a few flubs (LIVE TV) like where Laverne Cox's pedestal didn't go properly up and she had to climb up-that's bound to throw anybody off, but they were all super professional. I think it's a plus that's it's actors and actresses doing this, rather than singers. They put a lot of emotion in their performances and it wasn't just an impersonator type thing of Michael.

Good job.

My favorite part was watching EVERYBODY lip sync the songs on the sidelines-especially LL Cool J. They all knew all the words. :)
