MESSAGES TO THE ESTATE

How dare you to decide who's a "real fan" or what they need or not? *SMH*
It's a phrase I hate, but I had to use it anyway.

Its true: we do have the albums. Somebody can't call themselves a fan unless they own Thriller and at least 2 other albums.

Sony trying to sell Thriller again is just insulting at this point, and undermines the success of the original album.

Nope. I just evaluate only the content of each release.
You're very different to me. I can't get excited about another copy of Bad - especially when it's inferior to the copies sitting on my shelf.

The Ultimate Collection had at least a dozen unreleased tracks, as well as single and alternative versions of tracks.
It's just a confusing mess. It doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it greatest hits? Is it alternate mixes? Is it a B-sides collection? Is it rare demos? Is it a live album? This haphazard nature makes it very difficult on the ear. Not to mention physically hard to listen to.

And I definitely bought mine in a shop -JB HiFi in Melbourne-, and in fact it was available in The Virgin Megastore and HMV as I remember seeing it.
For a couple of weeks, maybe. But it's not like they had plenty of copies lying around. It was hard to get at release, and is almost impossible now.

The whole thing sold 200,000 copies, which I think equates to 40,000 actual copies. It was insignificant.

And the Bucharest concert wasn’t released separately because The Ultimate Collection sold poorly, it was merely issued as a stand alone release to make a live Michael Jackson concert available to the casual public
... because nobody bought it the first time, because $100 is poor value for a concert.

The standalone DVD sold over 3 million copies.

The same way that the Wembley concert was released separately along with the Bad25 Super Deluxe, only that was released parallel to that release.
Exactly. And as far as I can tell, the standalone DVD was more successful tha the "super deluxe" edition of Bad 25.

Because it's always better to separate things out.

I’ve been a fan since 1985. Id like to think that I’m a “real fan”.
I'm not saying you're not.

Btw, do you own a copy of Thriller?

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."
I don't understand. They already scored. MJs albums were a huge success. Are you saying Thriller was a miss?!

The memorable releases of the last decade are hard to find. They are essentially nonexistent.

Because the big releases happened in the 80s and 90s!! I'm thankful that we have such great music. They're some if the most memorable songs ever written. No need for any more.

MJ didn't want to release the other songs. It's not hard to understand.

MJ has always worked on older songs and released them later, and we don't know what he would have done with his music.

MJ didn't want to release the other songs.
More likely he couldn't due to several reasons.

It's not hard to understand.
I think it is, but to you. You don't seem to understand why people are interested in Michael's unreleased stuff, and why they would buy reissues if done propperly.

Food for thought for the Estate
On July 25, Rhino Records will revisit More Songs About Buildings and Food, the classic 1978 album from Talking Heads, for a Super Deluxe edition reissue.
Scheduled for release as Talking Heads continue to celebrate their 50th anniversary, the Deluxe Edition of More Songs About Buildings and Food will include previously unreleased songs and recordings from that era.
Tracks II: The Lost Albums brings together seven previously unreleased studio albums from the vaults of Bruce Springsteen, gathered together and released in full today, June 27.
Having been previewed in recent weeks with a few tracks showcasing some of the different eras and styles represented on this collection of never-before-heard music from “The Boss,” the entire set spans 83 songs in full — 74 of which had never been heard officially in any form.

I do see where you’re coming from to a certain extent regarding The Ultimate Collection. I like it, but……because all of the unreleased tracks are scattered among the discs it gives it a bit of a watered down feel.

What you have to understand is that it was the first sort of box set of its kind up to that point. I was a little disappointed that it included the Bucharest concert because I’d had my VHS copy that I recorded from the BBC broadcast at the time, and the Bad Tour was my holy grail, but I was happy enough with the contents, but sure, it could have been better.

About 5 years ago I picked up the white box in a secondhand shop which was pretty much in new condition, so I’ve got the black and white versions.

I have multiple copies of Thriller, Thriller Special Edition, Thriller25, Thriller40, Thriller SACD, MoFi, on vinyl, cassette and CD’s. I have 4 different CD versions of Thriller25 on CD. For good or bad, I own a lot of stuff.

The most expensive thing I ever bought was a Japanese first edition of HIStory, in a completely new condition lol

Nice. I’ve got HIStory on vinyl, but I’ve always wanted to collect MJ’s entire catalog as Japan CD’s -I love the obi strips as well- but the Japanese discs are quite expensive. But great sound and they look great too.

I can understand some people wanting the unreleased stuff. You can please those people releasing an album full of 15-20 unreleased songs. Unreleased material doesn't equal reissues.

Reissues are always pointless. Anybody who likes Thriller already has it. Anybody who likes Bad already has it. Anybody who likes HIStory already has it. You see?

Exactly. I can't listen in the car because it's huge. And even at home it's inconvenient because it doesn't fit on my shelf. And the whole thing is unwieldy and inconvenient because you're constantly looking up the next track number and pressing skip more than you're pressing play. You don't need 4 discs to deliver 10 songs, padded out with Smooth Criminal and DSTYGE and whatever.

I was a little disappointed that it included the Bucharest concert because I’d had my VHS copy that I recorded from the BBC broadcast at the time, and the Bad Tour was my holy grail, but I was happy enough with the contents, but sure, it could have been better.
Yeah, I had a VHS copy, but wanted to upgrade to DVD, and thought it was strange the way it was bundled. Needless to say, they went without that sale. I then bought the standalone Bucharest the day it was released.

I didn't even know there was a white version, lol.

Ugh. SE, Thriller25 and Thriller40 are all terrible. Offensively bad.

I don't own stuff for the sake of owning stuff. I have no attachment to bits of plastic. Better to own 1 great copy than 10 bad copies. For me it's all about the music.

Yeah, that’s fair enough. One decent hardcopy of an album is definitely enough. Can’t argue with that.

I have sentimental memories attached to all of my MJ purchases tho. The first time I saw my wife was in a picture where she was holding her copy of Thriller25, so that one is actually really important to me. As bad as the remixes are, they remind me of the early days in our relationship and For All Time is a personal favourite track.

I bought The Ultimate Collection black box when I was in Australia for a year and introduced several people I’d become friends with to the joys of MJ. One of those friends has now passed. He had a brain aneurysm a few years ago and I was devastated. I got him massive into MJ and watched Bucharest with him and others.

Bad on cassette, my father bought it for me.

And on and on. So yes, I love the physical format and I’m a sucker for nice packaging. And being able to instantly upload the music is no comparison to going to the store, buying the physical format and gearing up to delve into it. It’s just not the same ballpark for me.

The 2001 Special Edition CD’s I bought a few weeks after Invincible and I absolutely loved them when I got them. I have a massive memory to do with them that I won’t bore you with, but yeah, I’m old school in that sense.

Needles to say, but a lot of these were massive events in my life. And an MJ release was always a big event for me.

I’m the same with books. Kindle doesn’t do it for me. I need an actual book. There’s something about turning a page when you’re enthralled in a good read.

Anyways, I take your point.

Th SE's were released two weeks prior to Invincible. I bought Thriller & Bad on release day, OTW & D two days later. Tbh, even the sparse selection of bonus songs (initially, we were promissed much more) felt more Michael-ish than the entire Invincible album.

I’ll be very honest, I was more excited about the SE’s than Invincible. I’ve grown to really like Invincible in recent years, but yes, I concur. 👍

Just buy MoFi Dangerous SACD. It will sound so much better it will be like listening to a new album.
I don't expect any miracles from this Mo-Fi release. The original cd has already been mastered propperly.

This is what kings deserve:
Out in full today, Aug. 1, is Sunset Boulevard, a 5-CD collection of material from Elvis Presley spanning recording sessions “The King” had at RCA’s recording studios in Los Angeles in the 1970s.
A press release notes that among the 89 rarities included in the set, more than half of them were previously unreleased in the United States.

Dear Estate, this week, the existence of more unreleased songs was confirmed by leaked snippets. Perhaps you'll be able to release a small fraction of them in the coming decades.

If you do not have the source material please do not use artificial intelligence for the short films, be more transparent in what you do have and in what was lost.

Dear Estate.. i just turned 31.. (according to some weirdos i am almost 40) Many of us who were lucky enough to witness Michael Jackson during his lifetime are getting older—and sadly, some are no longer with us. Please consider releasing the material fans have been waiting for. Time is precious, and none of us, including you, will be here forever.

message to the Estate:

Your love is cruel, that's how I feel.
But I have not the words here to explain.
Gone is the hope for art that once enchanted us,
But there are countless curses to explain
To tell you how I feel, but I am
Speechless, speechless
That's how you make me feel
