Michael Jackson Pulled Out Of Spielberg's Hook Over Peter Pan Portrayal

Ref to truman show is http://popdirt.com/the-truman-show-based-on-michael-jakson/9310/

It just mentions peter weir saying in an interview, 'you watch the truman show and i mean jim carrey did a fantastic job, but Michael Jackson is truman. He's who i based him on and he is the nearest thing to truman.'

Only difference is that mj always knew the cameras were there and never did manage to escape.

Mirabella - that quote from leonard rowe's book is really sad. MJ was so into film and such a film buff, it was a real shame it never worked out for him, i think we can blame evan chandler for that.

^^I wouldn't know, the movie was late 90s and the quote from weir is 02, so he might have done.

A film mj wanted to do at some point in his life was phantom of the opera, with himself as the phantom.

That would have been interesting. Now when I see the Truman Show movie on tv i will think of Michael.

Hook to me was a great film as I watched it as a kid and think Michael would have captured the true essence of the film.. A man basically gets re connected to his childhood.. That IS Michael Jackson.. Michael would have made that film from a good film to a classic house hold known movie..

I love hook one of my fav movies, so many childhood memories. Yeah i kinda agree that this was not the role for Michael, but still it would have been kinda interesting seeing a semi dangerous Mike playing the lead role on hook:D

what is the story with Dreamworks???

Long story short: Michael, Spielberg, Katzenberg & Geffen were in talks to launch Dreamworks studio..after that lunatic Katzenberg got the shaft from Disney.

At some point, Geffen was very (extremely) influential in MJ's life. He talked him into hiring his buddy, Sandy Gallin, and from then on all went crazy in MJ-Land. That's when all the firing-hiring started. SMDH.

After Katzenberg got fired from Disney, all 4 were in talk to create a new Disney-esque studio.

Of course, MJ and Geffen became frienemies. The other 3 went behind his back and started the company without him, and kept his Neverland Moonboy inspired logo. Also, Steven Spielberg back handed comment during the "They don't care about us" fiasco didn't help their relationship either.

I was told, it had to do with the child molestation allegation in 1993, they didn't want MJ involved in a company producing movies geared towards families.

The logo was inspired by MJ's moon boy Neverland logo. And from what I've been told, it was MJ's idea. It wasn't created at the time they split up, but the idea had been discussed.

Needless to say, MJ was crushed when they started the company without him.

This is the BS story they've been selling for years now..

Sad to say, but I think a lot of Hollywood people turned their back on Michael, especially after the trial.

I wish Michael had got a chance to play the lead in bigscreen feature film. Some people think that Michael was not a great actor, but I think with the right role he could have done a pretty decent job. He's damn good at accents, and that's a plus.

I like the hook movie when I was a kid very much. However, I don't think MJ would fit in that role.
I also wanted to agree with people who mentioned Edward scissorhands.

As for the dreamwork story, I heard lots of people saying that for quite a long time.
Don't know how much and what part is true.
I think Jermaine mentioned that in the book.
Also Frank Cascio also said he Spielberg got the idea from when he stayed in neverland.

It angers me MJ dream of doing movies and strarring in them never came to be. Expect when he dies he gets a freakin movie out. How more jacked up can it get?*sigh* Seriously, the movie industry are morons for not given this talented man a freakin chance after the Wiz. He had the most brillant ideas. His short films speak for themselves. Damn those jealous hating fools!

That is terrible. Why did they agree to start with him if they didn't want to because of the allegations? It breaks my heart. I think Spielberg said something after Michael died. I always thought that logo seemed familiar to me.

I think the allegations came WHILE they were planning DreamWorks. DreamWorks was founded in 1994.

this is such a shame. In 93, Michael was on the top of the world, Oprah interview, superbowl performance (one of the most watched in tv history) , the clinton gala, the grammy lifetime achievement, his charities works... and the Dreamworks in process... suddently the allegations came out and changed everything, made Michael's life a hell. I was always wondering what Michael's life would be, if there was no allegations and media's constant attacks.

About Phantom of the Opera. It's interesting did Michael read the book. Because Phantom which is Eric was very cruel and bad person according to the book.

Sorry for off-topic

They should have stuck by him or given him the benefit of the doubt. Michael grew up in front of the world. He would never hurt anybody. Maybe it was better he didn't work with people like that. As a fan I want to know who treated Michael badly. There are too many hypocrites in front us and I can't tell who they are most of the time.

T... BTW, Robin Williams sucks big time in that SILLY movie and even Julia Roberts(one of my fav actresses) is so irritating as Tink! ...

...

I don't think that at all. I thought Roberts did a great job in her depiction of her longing for Peter Pan. Maggie Smith moved me as well.

The whole logo story is heartbreaking.

On the other hand Michael has something in common with absolutely COUNTLESS other directors, screenplay writers and actors. They all share that dream, hoping for that break.

I would have rather seen him in Edward Scissorshand. I read he was offered that role as well. I know Michael loved Peter Pan but somehow I think Edward Scissorshand would have been even more fitting for him. Especially considering what happened to him later in his life.

Word! I think Michael would have played Edward Scissorhands wonderfully.
