JACKSON SALES ROCKET
15 June 2005
By Steve Purcell

Sales of Michael Jackson's greatest hits album have shot up by 370% since the singer was acquitted of charges of child sex abuse, according to retailer HMV.

But they point out that the huge increase is because sales of the Number Ones compilation were at a "low base."

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: "Sales of his greatest hits album at HMV stores have increased by 370%.

"Michael Jackson sales start from a low base so any increases are bound to seem more spectacular than is the case in actual terms.

"There has been a bit of a pick-up but it's too early to make any predictions about a surge in Michael Jackson sales."

Not sales related per se, but gives us a picture of the spike in radio airplay for MJ's material.

USA

The on-the-air jury

By Ken Barnes, USA TODAY

When it comes to Michael Jackson, radio seems to have stopped when it got enough.

Even as the nation awaited a verdict in the singer's child-molestation case, radio stations were not working day and night to bring Jackson's music to their audiences. In the 14½ hours before the verdict's announcement at 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT Monday, 123 plays of Jackson songs were detected electronically by Nielsen BDS.

But in the 9½ hours after the verdict, ending at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT Tuesday, that number shot to 937. Over the next 24 hours, total plays declined to 914, proportionately about 40% of the post-verdict level.

What songs led the Jackson hit parade?

•Pre-verdict:Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Rock with You, P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing).

•Post-verdict:Billie Jean, Beat It, Don't Stop.

•Next day:Billie Jean, Don't Stop, Beat It.

Michael Jackson ponders next career move

By Michael Paoletta

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/n...son_career_dc_1

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Michael Jackson is a free man, but his future remains an enigma.

After a 14-week trial, Jackson was acquitted June 13 of all 10 charges he faced, ranging from child molestation to serving alcohol to minors. The jury trial in Santa Maria, Calif., attracted global media attention and served up a steady stream of sensational testimony.

While Jackson, 46, can take comfort in his acquittal, he also must reckon with immense debt and a career outlook that is uncertain at best.

Industry observers speculate that Jackson's next move could be a new album project, an international tour or a slot on Bob Geldof's upcoming Live 8 concert in Philadelphia.

Jackson's future as a recording artist is particularly unclear. His Sony Music recording contract dates back to 1991 and, if not already complete, is nearing completion. On July 5, Epic will release the two-CD collection "The Essential Michael Jackson."

Though Jackson has sold nearly 60 million albums in the United States alone, according to the Recording Industry Assn. of America, his latest releases have fallen short of blockbuster status. His most recent studio album was 2001's "Invincible," which sold more than 2 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The last substantial release before that was the 1995 two-disc set "HIStory: Past, Present and Future -- Book I," which scanned 2.5 million copies.

OWNERSHIP ISSUES

If Jackson is indeed a free agent, the timing may be right for interested parties to buy low. A key to his desirability will be whether he regains ownership of his masters.

Ultimately, former Sony Music Europe chairman Paul Burger notes, if Jackson delivers a great album, "any record company will want to sign him, including Sony BMG."

In the meantime, a source close to Jackson says the singer is seriously considering a tour with his brothers, and that the rumored Las Vegas "comeback" show is just that -- a rumor.

The trial's profile seems to have given Jackson's music a boost, at least in the short term. According to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, total Jackson spins went from 197 the day before the verdict to 1,171 the day of, an increase of more than 500 percent. Jackson's audience reach jumped from 716,000 to a whopping 18.8 million, with "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" getting the most airplay.

Similarly, some retailers report a spike in Jackson catalog sales. "I started to run out immediately," says Skippy White, owner of Boston-based chain Skippy White's, of the post-verdict reaction. "He has a lot of fans, and this news is bringing them into the stores."

In the United Kingdom, sales have picked up slightly, according to HMV Europe product director Steve Gallant. "He doesn't need to do huge things in America," Gallant says. "He has Europe, and emerging markets in the Far East."

BILLS TO PAY

Those markets will have to emerge quite a lot to keep Jackson solvent, however. The singer essentially is living off his 50 percent share of the Sony/ATV Music publishing catalog.

Jackson purchased ATV in 1985. Ten years later, in a deal orchestrated by his longtime attorney John Branca, Jackson merged ATV with Sony's music publishing division; the entire catalog is valued at around $1 billion.

With Jackson's post-trial debt reported to be $270 million, many wonder if the singer will need to unload his stake.

Jackson has used his share of the publishing giant, which includes more than 250 copyrights from the Beatles, as collateral in securing loans. Other debts have been secured using Mijac Music, a separate music publishing company that controls the copyrights to his work. One executive values that asset at $100 million. Jackson's record royalties and publishing rights are estimated to earn him $20 million per year, primarily in sales outside the United States.

The artist's Sony/ATV position hinges on his ability to keep up with debt interest payments.

In May, New York-based distressed-debt investor Fortress Investment Group bought Jackson's loan portfolio from original lender Bank of America after Jackson had payment problems.

Fortress is believed to have reworked Jackson's payment schedule to give him more flexibility. But he still likely needs to slash his spending to avoid defaulting on the loans. That, or embark on a massive tour.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN?

While never a frequent touring artist, Jackson has a history of road success. He last toured in 1997, when his European stadium HIStory trek grossed about $85 million, according to Billboard Boxscore, making him the second-highest-grossing artist of the year, after U2.

The artist's most recent show was his 30th Anniversary Tribute Concert at New York's Madison Square Garden in 2001. The two shows grossed $10 million.

Jackson surely would still be a strong draw internationally. But U.S. promoters might be less willing to pony up $1 million-plus guarantees for an artist whose earning potential -- and physical stamina to handle the touring grind -- is uncertain.

Others maintain Jackson could do strong touring business anywhere. "Michael Jackson is one of the great live performers of our time," says Paul Gongaware, producer of the HIStory tour and now co-CEO of Concerts West.

"Would he still be a big draw?" Gongaware asks. "Massive. Multiple arenas in many markets, all around the globe. Anyone who has ever seen him perform knows he's pure genius live."

The King of Pop Outsells a Prince

By CHARLES V. BAGLI

Published: June 19, 2005

Michael Jackson avoided a potential prison term last week, but he cannot escape the passage of time, a sentence that befalls all pop stars. Or can he?

Even after he was acquitted of child molesting and conspiracy in a Santa Maria, Calif., courtroom last week, many people are asking whether Mr. Jackson, 46, will ever record music again. If so, he seems to stand little chance of connecting with the young fans who have flocked to fresh-faced stars who emulate him, including Usher and Justin Timberlake.

It is certainly true that Mr. Jackson's album sales - and his fortunes - have slipped a long way since the 1980's, when he released blockbusters like "Thriller" (certified sales of 26 million copies) and "Bad" (eight million copies).

But whose haven't? Indeed, the self-proclaimed King of Pop remains one of the only stars who defined their careers in 1980's pop who can still crack the Billboard charts.

In fact, compared with contemporaries like Madonna and Prince, Mr. Jackson still packs a hefty commercial punch, even though he hasn't played a concert tour in the United States in more than a decade, and arguably does much less to market his recordings (regular appearances in tabloids aside).

Mr. Jackson's last album of original material, "Invincible," which was released in 2001, has sold an estimated 2.1 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan data. Madonna's last one, "American Life," from 2003, has sold about 656,000 copies. Prince's "Musicology," released last year, has racked up about two million copies, but more than half of them were provided to fans as an add-on when they purchased a ticket to his best-selling tour.

Madonna still outpaces Mr. Jackson (and Prince) for overall commerce since the music industry began computerized tracking in 1991; her catalog in all has sold about 22.8 million albums since then, while Mr. Jackson's has registered about 17.7 million copies. Her most recent greatest-hits compilation also outsold his.

The relative success of Mr. Jackson's new music - particularly against a backdrop of scandal and bizarre behavior - is testament to the loyalty of his hard-core fans. So long as he commands such fealty, then, he may live longer as the king than some imagine.

Well, the UK figures are in and as expected, Michael Jackson's sales did receive a slight boost as two albums re-entered the UK Top 200 Album Chart. It should be interesting to see if Michael's sales continue to climb from here since retailers might not have been initially prepared for the aftershock of Vindication day. :D

Funny what a "Not Guilty/Innocent/Vindication" week can do to one's sales! :p

As we all know, Michael Jackson made a significant swing back up in sales and airplay last week in the USA and abroad.

As previously reported, Michael Jackson's Number Ones posted a 138% increase with sales of 8,660 units. That figure has landed Michael back on the Billboard 200 @ #134 and Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart @ #49!

Well, that's not all the good news as ten titles in Michael Jackson's catalog posted a 100%+ sales increase!

Taken as a whole, Michael's entire catalog posted a 138% sales increase selling 27,166 units last week! :wild:

From the nearly 6,000 units Thriller sold (which incidentally has landed the album back in the Top 5 of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Chart and Top 30 of the Billboard Top Pop Catalog Chart) to the nearly 5,000 units the Number Ones DVD shifted (which also boosted the title into the Top 15 of the Billboard Comprehensive Music Videos Chart) to the 3,000 units Greatest Hits - HIStory Volume I sold (which has likely put the album in the Top 20 of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Chart), last week was indeed a week to celebrate. :holiday:

As previously mentioned in other chart wrap ups, the tally below does not include sales for The Ultimate Collection (4 CD/1 DVD), single sales, certain music DVD titles (eg. The One, Dangerous: The Short Films, etc.), material recorded with The Jacksons, and Motown era solo and Jackson 5 albums. One can imagine how much higher Michael's tally would be if those sales totals were included. :mez:

Notes: The latest album scanned another 162,000 and change (passing the 2 million mark in 10 weeks time.) Rainbow passed that mark sooner, but did not stay in the upper region of the chart like the new album has. Among catalog/older albums, Greatest Hits is flirting with the catalog top 50 (it was No. 58 the prior week, when it scanned 3,700+); it increases this week, but misses that mark since sales in general increased.

10. The Best of Cher: Millennium Collection (First Edition): 86 (+8%)
11. Live In Concert (Video, 1999): 74 (-6%)

Notes: Still not sure why Cher's Farewell Tour DVD is sellign at the levels it is again. Very Best of Cher continues to sell comfortably (I believe it's officially a catalog album now).

19. Bedtime Stories: 55 (-26%)
20. I'm Breathless: 54 (+29%)
21. Evita: 51 (+4%)

Notes: Madonna's The Immaculate Collection nudges up a bit, after what *may* have been its lowest sales tally since its release (though I can't 100% confirm that). GHV2 drops below 300 units (yikes), and Ray of Light continues to shine best in sales, among the studio albums. Last year at this time, the sales were higher, with the Re-Invention Tour going on. Upcoming propjects later this year should provide a spark in catalog sales.

JANET JACKSON - 3,131 units

1. Design Of A Decade 1986/1996 (album): 708 (+19%)
2. Damita Jo: 428 (+6%)
3. Rhythm Nation 1814: 379 (+3%)
4. From janet. To Damita Jo (Video): 375 (-7%)

12. One Wish: 4 (+100%)

Notes: The Greatest Hits reaches the 1K mark again as Just Whitney reaches what appears to be its lowest tally yet.

Post-Acquittal Jackson Back On Charts

Reuters, Saturday June 25.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - On a chart where Coldplay's "X&Y" becomes the first album in 10 weeks to stake consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Foo Fighters earn their biggest sales week and Backstreet Boys make a noteworthy return, many eyes will instead be riveted on an artist who had been absent from the list since February.

Seems Michael Jackson was in the news during the tracking week. Maybe you heard about it.

During the frame when he was acquitted of all the child molestation allegations brought against him, Jackson's solo albums sold a combined 22,000 copies. That might not sound like much, but it more than doubles his Nielsen SoundScan sum from the previous week.

The most conspicuous beneficiaries: "Number Ones," the hits set that re-enters the big chart for the first time since the week of Feb. 26 (No. 134, 9,000 copies, up 138%), and his monster album "Thriller," which re-enters Top Pop Catalog (No. 37, up 141%).

During the week the jury deliberated, Jackson's solo titles sold around 9,000 copies, about equal to what they sold during the week of closing arguments and about 1,000 more than he sold during the last full week of testimony.

A year ago, in the week ending June 20 -- after charges were filed but before the trial began -- those same Jackson albums (minus boxed set "The Ultimate Collection," which would not hit stores until November) sold 10,500.

In the week that ended June 23, 2003, some four months after the broadcast of the ABC special that piqued prosecutors' interest, Jackson's albums moved 13,000 copies, while 14,000 were sold in the comparable week of 2002, well before the hubbub began.

So, did this second round of allegations lessen his sales appeal, or are those smaller numbers a simple reflection of an artist who is 23 years removed from the biggest album of his career -- which in his case just happens to be the biggest-selling studio album ever?

Consider this: In 1984, when "Thriller" spent 26 weeks in the top 10, including 15 of the 37 weeks it clocked at No. 1, 38 artists placed albums in the Billboard 200's top 10. Of those 38, Jackson is one of only eight to notch top 10 albums since the current decade began.

By sunset of June 14, the day after the verdicts were read, Michael was no longer the most talked-about Jackson in Southern California, as the Los Angeles Lakers announced the return of basketball coach Phil Jackson.

In fact, neither Michael nor famous sibling Janet lay claim to being the best-selling Jackson of the SoundScan era, which began in 1991. During that span, he launched three No. 1 albums and sold 17.8 million copies of his combined solo titles; Janet scored three of her own chart-toppers and sales of 18.3 million.

Both fall shy of country king Alan Jackson. He also owns a trio of No. 1s on the Billboard 200, and generated 31.6 million in album sales, ninth among all acts since 1991.

Crazy Frog finally dethroned from top spot

27 June 2005 - 09:48:02
Source: Music Week

Becoming the first Coldplay album to open with three weeks at number one, X&Y posted another six figure sale last week, attracting a further 100,198 buyers to lift its 20 day tally to 803,642, writes Alan Jones.

Of the band's previous releases, their 2000 debut Parachutes took 160 days to reach that figure, while 2002's A Rush Of Blood to The Head got there in 97 days.

Although its sales were down week-on-week by 58.1%, X&Y sold 30.9% more than new runner-up James Blunt's debut album Back To Bedlam. Blunt's disc enjoyed a 14.3% increase in sales to 76,546, while his single You're Beautiful also had its best week yet at retail, increasing its sales by 41.3%, to 23,923 even as it slips 2-3.

Completing the artist album chart top three, and providing the only new entry in the Top 20, is Dynamite, the new album from Jamiroquai.

Since 1993, Jamiroquai have released six albums - three number ones, two number twos, and one number three - the last and least being new album Dynamite, which sold 64,150 copies last week to debut behind Coldplay and James Blunt. That's 20% down on the 80,209 sales which earned Jamiroquai's last album, A Funk Odyssey, a number one debut in 2001. Of Jamiroquai's number two albums, 1994's Return Of The Space Cowboy was denied by Cross Roads - The Best Of Bon Jovi and 1996's Travelling Without Moving spent a fortnight in second place, first behind REM's New Adventures In Hi-Fi then Kula Shaker's K.

Many significant climbers in the album chart were helped by deep discounting as the summer sales seasons began but Jem's debut album Finally Woken makes a genuine and impressive leap on the back of the success of second single Just A Ride.

Finally Woken sold just 37 copies the week it was released last September but climbed as high as number nine in April, after introductory single They was released. With Just A Ride topping the airplay chart and reaching number 16 on the singles chart, Finally Woken has climbed 36-22-6 in the last fortnight, and sold 26,973 copies last week to bring its overall sales to 180,055.

Also enjoying organic and genuine improvements in support are the latest albums from Mariah Carey and Jack Johnson.

Carey's We Belong Together is toppled from the US Hot 100 summit this week but her Emancipation Of Mimi album continues to prosper there, with 163,295 new buyers last week taking its 10 week tally to 2,036,870. In the UK, We Belong Together is enjoying rapidly escalating media support - it jumps 17-11 on the radio airplay chart and 7-2 on TV airplay - propelling the album to increased sales for each of the last seven weeks. It vaults 21-9 this week, to log its first appearance in the Top 10 since its number seven debut in April. Sales of 21,169 - its best yet, slightly overshadowing its first week tally of 20,876 - bring its total to 134,725.

Hawaiian surfer Jack Johnson reached only number 50 with single Good People last week but airplay is increasing apace, and helps Johnson's latest album In Between Dreams, to jump 24-18 and enter the Top 20 for the first time. The album - a million selling number two success in America - has sold 88,639 copies since its release in February and is Johnson's first chart album, though previous albums On And On and Brushfire Fairytales have sold 42,240 copies and 37,637 copies here without even making the Top 200.

Whether or not the period leading up to Michael Jackson's trial on child molestation charges affected his sales adversely is a moot point but since his recent acquittal they have certainly improved. Sales of the Top 10 MJ titles improved by 161% in the week immediately afterwards, with the biggest improvement coming from his Number Ones album, which re-charted at number 107 last week, with sales of 2,456 - an 183.7% increase week-on-week. Its sales are up again this week by 31.8% as it climbs to number 77 with sales of 3,237.

The start of the summer sales season couldn't counteract the post Father's Day decline in the album market last week but it did restrict the fall to 20.1%, as sales slip to a four week low at 2,625,348, with compilations tumbling by 35.8% to 472,938 and artist albums off 15.5% at 2,159,410.

The compilation sector bore the brunt of the decline, as sales of specifically marketed Father's Day records naturally suffered huge declines once the day had passed. Dad Rocks, which had been number one for two weeks, slips 1-5 with sales off 87.5% week-on-week at 12,374, while I Love Dad and World's Best Dad fall 3-18 and 6-24 with almost identical collapses. The new number one compilation, Hairbrush Divas Presents Sing-A-Long Summer sold just 18,603 copies last week, compared to the 99,031 Dad Rocks sold to take the title the previous week.

Meanwhile, the physical singles market improved by 11.5% to 394,004, while the donwload market fell 9.8% to 361,955. Overall, singles sales increased marginally by 0.2% to 754,638 as Crazy Frog's four week reign at number one came to an end, with sales of Axel F falling by 40.4% to 31,034 . The single slips to number two, some 80.5% in arrears to new chart champ 2 Pac.

Tupac Shakur was shot dead at the age of 25 on 13 September 1996 with two UK chart entries to his credit, but the late rapper's tally climbs to 18 this week, with Ghetto Gospel, his first number one. Selling 56,016 copies last week, the single is laced with Elton John's vocals from Indian Sunset, a track off his 1971 album Madman Across The Water. Ghetto Gospel's success breathes life into 2 Pac's Loyal To The Game album, which originally peaked at number 64 last December but now rockets 69-25 with sales last week of 12,561 lifting its overall tally to 77,195.

Ghetto Gospel puts Elton John at number one for the seventh time in his career, and is the fifth number one out of the last six to be either a total of partial remake of a song more than 20 years old, the only all-new number one in this string being Oasis' Lyla.

In addition to the 2 Pac/Elton hit, singles from Bobby Valentino, MVP, Missy Elliott, Hard-Fi and 50 Cent also debut in the Top 10 this week, as the level of sales required to break into the top tier rises by 18.7% week-on-week to 11,424.

Slow Down is the introductory single from smooth R&B newcomer Bobby Valentino's Disturbing Tha Peace Presents album, and debuts at number four after selling 18,892 copies . Valentino's album is on the rise too, moving 42-34 to reach a new chart peak. On release for nine weeks so far, it has sold 38,013 copies. In America, where Slow Down reached number eight on the Hot 100, Valentino's album reached number three on debut, and dips 39-50 this week, with sales to date of 410,804. As well as it did, Valentino's single was clearly expected to do better by Woolworth's, appearing at number one in their in-store chart. Had Valentino reached number one, incidentally, he would have been the second artist of that name to have a number one - session musician Bobby Valentino contributes the crucial violin to the Bluebells' chart-topper Young At Heart, and also co-wrote the song.

Missy Elliott's last four Top 40 hits have been in the role as a guest rapper on hits primarily featuring - in order - Ghostface, Christina Aguilera, Tweet and Ciara - but she's back in her own right with Lose Control, the first single from her upcoming sixth album The Cookbook, which is out next Monday (4 July). Lose Control is credited only to Missy though it also features Fatman Scoop and the aforementioned Ciara, who returns Missy for appearing on her 1-2 Step single, which reached number three in April. Debuting at number seven this week, with sales of 12,538, Lose Control is Missy's 10th Top 10 hit, and 21st Top 40 hit.

Hailing from Staines in Middlesex, Hard-Fi think they should be categorised as an indie rock band, but say they understand why they are dubbed as ska revivalists. They've also been compared to the Streets by more than one critic. Wherever they fall in the musical spectrum, they achieve their first Top 10 single this week with Hard To Beat debuting at number nine on sales of 11,568. Their debut hit Tied Up Too Tight reached number 15 in April, and both singles can be found on their critically acclaimed debut album Stars Of CCTV, which is released next Monday (4 July).

The late Elvis Presley has had 16 Top 10 hits this year, thanks to the 70th birthday celebration reissues of his former number ones, but among contemporary acts the first to register four Top 10 entries this year is 50 Cent. Fiddy was featured on The Game's How We Do and Hate It Or Love It - number five and four hits in February and May, respectively, and also hit number four with his own single Candy Shop in April. This week, Just A Lil Bit completes his quartet by debuting at number 10, on first week sales of 11,424. It brings to seven his haul of hits - all Top 10 entries - since he made his debut with In Da Club in April 2003.

Stereophonics scored the first number one of their career with Dakota, the introductory single from their current album Language. Sex. Violence, Other? in March. Follow-up Superman debuts this week at number 13 with first week sales of 8,469 compared to Dakota's 40,378. On its 15th week in the chart, the album dips 28-30 (a new low) this week, with sales of 9,231 lifting its cume to 343,174 , meaning its nearly halfway to the 692,099 sales of its predecessor You Gotta Go There To Come Back, which celebrated its second birthday last week. Superman is Stereophonics' 21st Top 40 hit.

Finally, kudos to Studio B, whose I See Girls is proving to be extremely tenacious.

So far, it has survived for 13 weeks on the chart so far, without reaching the Top 10, and looks set for many more. Moving 12-14-13-13-15-19-23-34-44-40-32-25-34, the record's first three weeks in the chart were prior to downloads being included but demand for the track - a massive Radio One favourite and a big continental hit - has outstripped its physical availability, and as the CD and 12-inch have become increasingly scarce, the share of its sales accounted for by downloads has grown from 14.7% to 64.4% in the last four weeks. Sales of 3,334 last week bring its overall tally to 65,033, of which physical sales account for 53,496.

Hey, I was just wondering if cassettes are counted in those sales? Coz I brought a cassette of Number Ones a couple of days ago.
Yesterday in a music shop I also brought the official piano sheet music of Invincible, Dangerous and Farewell My Summer Love. Michael gets money and sales from this, right? Coz they cost about double that of a music cd.
Yesterday I also brought this 12" thriller remix cd (i think thats what its called) and that has MJJ productions on it so i guess he gets sales and money from that...
Thanks for the good work amit :flowers:

First off, Amit as always thanks for the info you've supplied. "Number Ones" is at over 930,000 scanned marching toward platinum I am so happy. I hope Sony certifies it for Double Platinum someday along with "Greatest Hits Vol 1" that needs to be certified Double Plat as well.

GiveItUp, I don't know the answers to all of your questions but cassettes are counted towards the total sales of an album. When soundscan totals everything it's cassettes, vinyl, CD and DVD of "Number Ones". I hope that helps answer your question.
