In 1995, Motown started to negotiate the opportunity of official certifications for all the multi million sellers like Diana Ross, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5, Michael jackson etc....
They had an abstract full of achievements (charts and record sold).
The deal was so expensive and nothing happened.
Thimoty White of Billboard wrote something about it with all the numbers.

Here are MJ's numbers:

From Motown database:

GOT TO BE THERE............2.908.757
BEN........................3.345.612

THE ORIGINAL.................137.406
ANTHOLOGY....................702.341

COPIES SOLD,ONLY USA; INCLUDES: LP,MC,CD

This proves how much Michael is severely under-certified by the RIAA on albums and singles sales as well.

The information you are giving here is pretty amazing! I wasn't aware of this and I totally agree on the fact that Michael is really underestimated by the RIAA. Just a quick example: I think that RIAA estimates US sales for Michael of more or less 60 millions. If you just add what you have just given, it's almost 72 millions!!!!!

What do U mean with nothing happened? They stopped the certification process?

As far as the Timothy White article on Billboard explained, Motown (or Universal) were ready to certify most of their biggest artists main catalogue titles . Later, they denied to pursue the process on the basis of far expensive fee.

Here are some Motown singles sales found on Motown database :

I Want You Back Sales: 2.060.711.
ABC Sales: 2.214.790.
The Love You Save Sales: 1.948.761.
Maybe Tomorrow Sales: 830.794
Got To Be There Sales: 1.583.850.
Ben Sales: 1.701.475 .
Little Bitty Pretty One Sales: 590.629.
Looking Through The Windows Sales: 581.426.
Corner Of The Sky Sales: 381.426.
Dancing Machine Sales: 2.170.327.

Apart of I Want You Back, which was only certified Platinum in 1997 for 1 million sales, none of them ever received a nod for a RIAA certification.

Heal The World Soundscan sales: 303.755
They Don't Care About Us Soundscan sales: 327.260

These are Soundscan sales for 2 MJ solo singles that shows that they are eagerly in need of a RIAA Gold award for 500.000 units shipped.

It's great to know the MOTOWN sales!!!  Thanks!!! :sarmoti  :sarmoti  :sarmoti

I wonder why the ARIA hasn't certified these sales yet???!!!

It's the RIAA, not ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association). The reason they are not certified is that Motown never affiliated to RIAA cause they didn't want to pay for this!

Anyway, here's the breakdown for other MJ US sales:

Got To Be There................1.583.850
Rockin’ Robin....................2.101.641
Ben...............................1.701.475
I wanna be where you are.........658.305
With a child’s heart..............174.320
We’re almost there...............237.421
Just a little bit of you...........509.876

Michael Jackson - 15,323 units (Sales Estimate)

Notes: Since SoundScan figures aren't available for The Essential and Live In Bucharest , we can only estimate how much The Essential sold based on the sales trajectory for the past few weeks and we can only estimate how much Live In Bucharest sold based on the chart ranking of the Number Ones DVD on the BB Comprehensive Music Videos Chart.

1. The Essential (2 CD): (Sales Estimate: 3,500)

Madonna

Notes: So, the "fallout" post-iTunes-debut week isn't as severe as some may have expected. Still don't know why GHV2 shows scanning *0* in the digital arena- if it was a technical glitch, wouldn't it have been corrected? (that also affected "Like a Prayer" for individual tracks- just one version was tracked, as opposed to its two- it would have been second-, third- or fourth-most downloaded track).

Anyhoo, sales of the 16 albums totaled 7,708 units, a drop of roughly 15.4%. TIC and ROL held up nicely. However, sales should continue to ease back to more-normal paces over the next couple of weeks, I'd think.

1. The Immaculate Collection: 3,928 (-7%)
2. Ray Of Light: 520 (-9%)
3. GHV2: 433 (-13%)
4. Madonna: 360 (-20%)

24. Vogue (Single): 22 (-12%)
25. American Life (Single): 20 (-44%)

Cher
(excluding live Farewell Tour and Gold CD's)

Notes: The Very Best Of Cher eases back only slightly, while nothing too notables occurs with the other titles (other than a 44% bump for Living Proof).

1. The Very Best of Cher (2 CD): 1,568 (-4%)
2. The Very Best of Cher (Video): 623 (-8%)
3. The Best of Cher-Millennium Collection (first edition): 617 (-2%)

9. Believe: 120 (+3%)
10. Heart of Stone: 110 (-11%)
11. Half Breed: 104 (-15%)
12. Living Proof: 56 (+44%)
13. Love Hurts: 17 (-)

Whitney Houston

Notes: It's back-to-back TGH at the top of the list this week, as TGH album nudges back above 800 units, and TGH video is at 200+ units. On the flip side, The Bodyguard drops below 200 units, and MLIYL drops back again.

1. The Greatest Hits (2 CD): 824 (+3%)
2. The Greatest Hits: (Video): 203 (+6%)
3. The Bodyguard: 192 (-20%)

9. Live in Hawaii (Video): 91 (-11%)
10. Design of a Decade 1986/1996 (Video): 78 (-23%)
11. All For You (CD/DVD): 29 (-22%)

Mariah Carey
(excluding Live at MSG DVD and digital single sales)

Notes: We know TEOM scanned roughly 75,000 last week. The older titles had an OK week - six albums increased, to varying degrees, with Butterfly enjoying the biggest percentage gain.

1. Greatest Hits (2 CD): 3,552 (-11%)
2. #1's- 1,377 (-11%)
3. Remixes (2 CD): 455 (-7%)

For the week ending September 18th.

GH - HIStory Volume I: 840,945
Thriller: 1.545 million of old edition + 844,935 of Special Edition = 2.39 million

Looks like Number Ones will getto 1 million much quicker than Damita Jo. It just passed it in sales this week.

It's the RIAA, not ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association). The reason they are not certified is that Motown never affiliated to RIAA cause they didn't want to pay for this!

Thank you for the correction.

I don't understand the MOTOWN... they didn't want to pay for certification???!!!

Exactly! But I hope things will change cause Universal now administrates the Motown label. I know that Elvis Presley fans once petitionned in order to encourage RCA to audit his entire catalogue of albums and singles in USA. Once they did it, Elvis' sales audited total increased by ten of millions.

And at last, the Jackson 5 album sales (US sales only):

Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5.......... 3.987.870
ABC.......... 4.134.789
Third Album.......... 4.687.923
Maybe Tomorrow.......... 3.234.712

Dancing Machine.......... 1.988.456

Anthology (2cd).......... 876.456

Boogie.......... 38.469
An American Dream.......... 287.765
Soulsation (4cd).......... 25.577

These sales take into account every format of release (LP, MC, CD) and are US-only until 1995. There are taken from Motown's database.
I'm still waiting for the sales of the 1970 Christmas album, said to be one the J5 biggest album ever!

Well, I'm still waiting for may correspondant response. He's the one who have all these informations from an old article of Billboard. However, he told me that he only had individual sales from Motown records, cause he had access from a friend at Motown database.
