BETTING ON THE BOXES

Hi Keith,

With the slew of box sets being released this season (eg. Michael Jackson's "The Ultimate Collection," Bon Jovi's "100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong," the Beatles' "The Capitol Albums Vol. 1," Nirvana's "With the Lights Out," etc.) I was wondering what are reasonable sales expectations for a box set?

Would you be able to provide the sales on the old box sets for the Carpenters' "From the Top," Diana Ross's "Forever Diana: Musical Memoirs," Led Zeppelin's 1990 self-titled box set, and the Doors' 1997 self-titled box set?

I'm just trying to figure out what type of sales to expect here.

Thanks a lot!

Amit

Hello Amit,

One should not expect a box set to sell as much as a single CD release. Priced much higher than your typical release, multi-disc sets are aimed at a very specific audience, the devoted fan of a particular artist.

Nearly all of the new box sets you mentioned carry a list price of $59.95, save for the Beatles box, which lists for $69.95.

The Carpenters' "From the Top" has sold 53,000 units in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, while Diana Ross' "Forever Diana" has shifted 73,000. The Doors self-titled box has moved 181,000 units.

Led Zeppelin's self-titled box was released in 1990, before SoundScan began tabulating data. Since then, it has sold 1.3 million units.

UK music sees record album sales

Dido's album was the biggest-selling in the UK in the past year
UK record companies are celebrating their best ever year for album sales, with a record 237 million sold in the 12 months to September. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) trade body said albums by the likes of Keane and The Streets had helped drive a 3% rise compared with last year.

It also said sales of single tracks were up thanks to the availability of legal download services. Download sales would be added to the singles chart from next year, it added.

Around 1.75 million individual tracks were purchased from online services such as MyCokeMusic and Wippit between July and September 2004 - helping sales of single tracks increase by 9% on the previous quarter.

With online sales stripped out, singles sales were down by 12%.

However, sales of traditional 7" singles were up for the 11th quarter in a row, with sales topping one million in the year to September - an increase of 74.8%.

UK-based success

The top-selling album of the 12 months to September was Life For Rent by Dido, with Friday's Child by Will Young coming second.

TOP 10 ALBUMS
1) Life for Rent - Dido
2) Friday's Child - Will Young
3) Elephunk - Black Eyed Peas
4) Call Off The Search - Katie Melua
5) Number Ones - Michael Jackson
6) In Time - Best Of 1988-2003 - REM
7) Feels Like Home - Norah Jones
8) Hopes and Fears - Keane
9) A Present For Everyone - Busted
10) Greatest Hits - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Figures for Oct 2003 to Sept 2004. Source: BPI/Official UK Charts Company

Of the 20 top albums of the year, 11 were by acts signed to UK-based labels, including Katie Melua, Busted, The Darkness and Scissor Sisters.

Some 60% of CD albums now sell for less than £10, which meant that although more albums were sold, their sales value fell slightly during the three months to September.

Music DVD sales were up by 41% on the same period last year, with a special DVD release of Oasis' Definitely Maybe topping the bestsellers.

BPI chairman Peter Jamieson said: "The British record industry's continued investment in new British talent is paying off.

"While albums from new British artists are selling well, the booming DVD market is making an impact and the legal dowbload market shows that demand remains high for single-track purchases."

Hey guys - Some were curious about the disrepancy between MJ's RIAA video certifications and Soundscan totals. Hope this clears it up.

* The exact Soundscan total of "Stranger In Moscow" is unavailable although a reasonable sales estimate is between 85,000-100,000 units.

Very good news on the USA chart front.

Michael Jackson's Thriller re-entered the Billboard 200 Comprehensive Album Chart at #183 selling 11,900 copies last week. Sales of the Special Edition now stand at 708,000 units in the USA. The album itself is certified 26X platinum and was last certified by the RIAA in October 2000 - four years ago. It could easily be argued that at least two more platinum certifications are overdue.

BTW, since Thriller is ineligible to appear on the Billboard 200 obviously, the album re-enters the Billboard Pop Catalog Chart at #30.

Note: Thriller has scanned approximately 80,000 units in the USA over the past four months.

This is interesting. We also know that both Thriller, Off The Wall and The Jacksons best of did very well this year. My guess is that MJ has sold more than 600.000 albums in the UK this year.

Maybe I'm a little late but...

When Number Ones was released it was #3 for 3 weeks on Top 10 Album Sales
tho album sales are very low in slovenia, i don't see why it shouldn't be included in here

I'd be interested in hearing if Sony did any promotion at all on TUC in any country -here in the UK I've seen very little, in fact none at all - U2, on the other hand have had TV ads galore. I want to know what is the point of them releasing this box set and then not promoting it? It seems to me at the moment, that only MJ fans really know about it, I've not seen any shops with posters in the window or anything. They didn't even have it on sale in ASDA this weekend....unless of course they had sold out!

Thoughts, anyone?

these are the sales of Number Ones since the beggining of the year? If yes, what is the total figure please Amit?
Hey uk - Number Ones has shifted over 1.6 million units in the UK to date. The album is eligible for a 5X platinum certification in that territory.

Also, in Australia, I believe Number Ones has shipped enough units to be certified triple platinum (although Guy would have to confirm that). The album has spent a remarkable 56 weeks and counting on the ARIA Urban Album Chart.

According to deanryan, the current best estimate worldwide sales for Number Ones would be 6 million (a figure I agree with).
