King Of Pop registers on numerous Year-End Charts as 'Number Ones' album shifts 6 million units worldwide

With 2004 now a wrap, Michael Jackson has a reason to smile as a slew of his music releases (from both past and present) charted so consistently throughout the year that he placed in the Top 10 on numerous Year-End Charts around the world. As an added bonus, the artist's 2003 Epic/Sony release Number Ones hit the 6 million unit mark worldwide giving Jackson his third multi-platinum album of the 00's.

United Kingdom

With cumulative sales of approximately 2 million units (CD and DVD), the success of Michael Jackson's Number Ones project in the UK is nothing short of exemplary. In fact, according to figures released by BPI/Official UK Charts Company, the 5X platinum* Number Ones CD was the UK's fifth best selling album of the year (Oct 2003 to Sept 2004.)

Jackson also received another distinction as (for the second year in a row) he placed the most number of albums on the UK End Of Year Top 200 Album Chart with Number Ones, Thriller, and The Very Best Of The Jacksons all making the cut. It's worth noting that in 2003, Jackson similarly achieved this feat with four entries (more than any other artist) as Number Ones, Greatest Hits - HIStory Volume I, Thriller, and Off The Wall all made the Year End Chart that year as well.

With an impressive six Jackson albums that entered the UK Top 75 Album Chart, 2004 was a year full of chart surprises to say the least:

- Off The Wall re-entered the album chart in July 2004 peaking at #13;

- The Very Best Of The Jacksons peaked at #7 in July 2004 eventually being certified UK Gold by the BPI;

- Thriller spent a cumulative three months inside the Top 75 peaking at #36;

- Bad re-entered the chart in January 2004 peaking at #61;

- The Ultimate Collection (4 CD/1 DVD) boxed set peaked at #10 and #75 on the UK R&B Album Chart and UK Top 75 Album Chart respectively; and

- Number Ones continued it's lengthy residency on the charts becoming the artist's sixth 5X platinum* album in the UK to date.

With over 1.6 million units sold and counting, the success of the Number Ones CD in the UK shows no signs of abating as just recently, the album kicked off 2005 by re-entering the UK Top 75 Album Chart at #53.

Australia

From the land up top to the land down under, 2004 was also a great year for Michael Jackson in Australia . Not only did the artist's triple platinum* Number Ones album mark it's 58th week on the ARIA Top 40 Urban Album Chart but his Number Ones DVD was also named the #1 Best Selling Music DVD of the Year by the ARIA.

With three Jackson albums hitting the charts in 2004, Jackson's chart performance in Australia looked exactly like this:

- Number Ones enjoyed a lengthy residency on the charts becoming the 53rd Best Selling Album of the Year and 6th Best Selling Urban Album of the Year (an almost identical distinction the album received in 2003 when after only six weeks of release, it was named the 52nd Best Selling Album of the Year and 9th Best Selling Urban Album of the Year by the ARIA);

- Thriller spent a cumulative five months inside the Top 40 of ARIA Urban Album Chart peaking at #22; and

- The Very Best Of The Jacksons peaked at #15 and #3 on the ARIA Top 100 Album Chart and ARIA Urban Album Chart respectively with set notching gold* status.

With the 8X platinum* Number Ones DVD marking it's 55th week on the ARIA Music DVD Chart and the Number Ones and The Very Best Of The Jacksons CD's still holding strong after their 60th and 25th week on the ARIA Top 40 Urban Album Chart, 2005 looks to be another year of solid chart activity for the King Of Pop in Australia.

Not to be overlooked, honorable mentions must go to sister country New Zealand where both Number Ones and The Very Best Of The Jacksons were certified double platinum and gold respectively last year.

USA

In 2004, Michael Jackson was also no stranger to the U.S. music charts as his platinum* Number Ones album and triple platinum* Number Ones DVD were just two of many releases which kept the artist well represented on the charts:

- Number Ones (DVD) hit the #1 position on the Billboard Top Music Video Chart in January 2004 eventually scanning a cumulative 250,000 units by the end of the year;

- Number Ones (CD) hit the #1 position on the Billboard Top Internet Albums Chart in January 2004 with the album scanning over 800,000 units in the USA to date;

- The One (DVD), a commercial release of the artist's Number Ones CBS TV special, peaked at #28 on the Billboard Top Music Video Chart in March 2004;

- Thriller spent a cumulative two months inside the Top 50 of the Billboard Pop Catalog Chart peaking at #22;

- The Ultimate Collection (4CD/DVD) boxed set peaked at #22, #48 and #154 on the Billboard Top Internet Albums Chart, Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart, and Billboard 200 respectively. The five disc collection has scanned over 40,000 units since it's release in November 2004; and

- Greatest Hits: HIStory Volume I spent a cumulative two months inside the Top 50 of the Billboard Pop Catalog Chart peaking at #28.

With over 5 million Epic/Sony era CD's scanned in the United States over the past three years (November 2001 - November 2004) and counting, Jackson's chart activity in his home country is another example of his enduring appeal.

Europe

2004 was also an accomplished year for Michael Jackson across Europe as his triple platinum* Number Ones CD and The Ultimate Collection (4CD/1 DVD) boxed set both made their mark on music charts across the continent:

- In Ireland, the 5X platinum* Number Ones CD accumulated 37 weeks on the Top 50 Album Chart and ended the year as Ireland's 33rd best selling album of the year (a significant achievement considering the CD was Ireland's 9th best selling album of 2003.) Elsewhere on the charts, Off The Wall re-entered the Top 50 Album chart in July 2004 peaking at #12 while The Ultimate Collection (4 CD/1 DVD) rounded out the year peaking at #71;

- In France, Number Ones peaked at #5 on the Top 40 Compilation Album Chart while The Ultimate Collection (4 CD/1 DVD) similarly made an impressive showing peaking at #29;

- In Spain , Number Ones (both the CD and DVD) were certified with a double dose of gold. The Ultimate Collection (4CD/1 DVD), meanwhile, peaked at #57; and

- In Greece, Number Ones spent three months on the album chart peaking at #6 while The Ultimate Collection (4 CD/1 DVD) peaked at #37.

Elsewhere across Europe ( Italy , Austria , Denmark , Switzerland , Belgium , Holland , Norway , The Czech Republic, Germany , and the Netherlands ) Number Ones also made it's mark as the album shifted gold and/or platinum sales in each country.

Japan

According to figures released by ORICON, Michael Jackson's Number Ones was Japan 's 13th Best Selling Album for the first half of 2004. With The Ultimate Collection (4 CD/1 DVD) recently debuting at #47 on the Top 50 Album Chart, Jackson 's Japanese chart action in 2004 was exceptional as the platinum honors continued to grow.

Summary

From Australia (where the triple platinum* Numbers Ones CD and 8X platinum* Number Ones DVD enjoyed a year long stay on the charts) to the UK (where the 5X platinum* Number Ones CD was named the 5th Best Selling Album of 2003/2004 by the Official UK Charts Company) to the United States (where the platinum* Number Ones CD and 3X* platinum Number Ones DVD became the latest additions in a string of the artist's platinum/multi-platinum releases) 2004 was a year brimming with professional accomplishments for the King Of Pop.

With 2005 already in progress, Michael Jackson might be pleased to know that his Number Ones album kicked off the new year by re-entering the UK Top 75 Album Chart at #53 (climbing to #48 this week) while Number Ones moved ahead to #12 on Australia's ARIA Urban Album Chart.

Just a reminder that like the artist on stage, the record continues to spin.

Chili Peppers make Top 100

US Rockers, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have entered the record books as one of the 100 most successful recording artists of all time.

The Guinness British Hit Singles and Albums book ranks artists every year according to how many weeks they have spent in the UK singles and albums charts.

The likes of Madonna, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Elvis Presley are already in the top 100.

This year, the Chilies are the only new entry - making it to number 97.

Those who have a chance of getting in next year include Britney Spears, Eminem, Westlife, Radiohead and Iron Maiden, according to the list's compilers.

Spandau Ballet has fallen out of the top 100, while Michael Jackson is the highest climber as he is now number eight.

Elvis Presley still tops the list having notched up 2463 weeks in the UK singles and albums charts - more than the time he was alive for.

The acts which have climbed the list include The Stereophonics to 84, The Corrs to 89; Guns n' Roses to 74; and Robbie Williams to 43.

George Michael has risen to 56; REM to 32; Cher to 68 and Simply Red to 26.

Those to fall down the list include Electric Light Orchestra to 54; Bruce Springsteen to 47; Blur to 91; and Mike Oldfield to 48.

British Hit Singles & Albums editor David Roberts said: "It's very rare to get new acts breaking into the Top 100, so this really is an incredible achievement".

Hey guys - As previously reported, 2004 was a phenomenal year for Michael Jackson in the UK as he was the 30th Best Selling Albums Artist Of The Year with sales of 660,000 units (excluding sales of Jackson 5/Jacksons albums.)

As per Musicweek, here's some followup information of exactly how many albums Thriller, Bad, and Off The Wall sold in the UK in 2004. You'll notice that for the second year in row, Jackson had the most titles on the End Of Year Catalogue Chart.

Thanks for the info chrismusicpower. Much appreciated. :pirate:

CATALOGUE 2004 by ALAN JONES

Made up in exactly equal measure of regular albums and compilations, the Top 50 catalogue albums of 2004 - titles first released no later than 1 January 2002 - are diverse both in terms of their content and their original chart performance.

It's not a major surprise, for example, to find Abba's perennial Gold compilation winning the title for best-selling catalogue album at a canter, adding a further 376,782 sales to its already enormous tally in the year, and leaving the number two selection, Duran Duran's reactivated Greatest album, trailing 57.7% behind it, though Greatest sold a highly creditable 238,897 copies.

But how to explain the popularity of Rage Against The Machine's self-titled debut? The album failed to impress here when first released in 1993, peaking at number 17. It was even less of a hit in the band's native America, where it climbed no higher than number 45 on the Billboard chart. It has, however, subsequently been lauded as a classic, pioneering album, the first to blend rap and metal into a potent new style which has become much imitated. At its low point in 1997, the album sold 10,420 - a respectable tally for a four year old album which barely scraped into the Top 20 - but it increased sales significantly in each of the next six years, and sold as many as 80,968 copies in 1993. It finally suffered a decline in 2004, but the 53,715 copies it sold are still enough to make it the 50th best-selling catalogue album of the year.

Michael Jackson had most titles in the chart in 2003, and repeats the feat for 2004, with the same three albums in the same order - Thriller improves 9-6, Off The Wall slips 16-17 and Bad stumbles 22-47, with sales of 134,729, 91,675 and 56,209, respectively.

Off The Wall - which dates from 1979 - is one of the oldest titles on the list
, being junior only to The Sex Pistols' Never Mind The Bollocks (1977, number 21, 87,195 sales), David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust (1973, number 43, 60,410) and the Beach Boys' 1966 classic Pet Sounds, which finishes in 37th place, with 65,850 sales.

The Beach Boys therefore win a notable victory over their '60s rivals the Beatles, whose top regular studio album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, just misses this year's list. However, the Beatles' 1 compilation finishes at number 16 on the catalogue list, with 92,689 sales in 2004, while The Very Best Of The Beach Boys is 26th with 80,166 sales.

You'll note that since the news below was originally published in May 2004, it's almost one year old. Therefore, if I had to estimate, I'd say the Number Ones DVD has shifted somewhere between 1.7 to 2 million units worldwide to date.

P.S. I just picked up a old stack of Billboard magazine's from 2004 hence the lateness in this report... :pirate:

USA

(12/02/05): According to an article published in the May 8th, 2004 edition of Billboard magazine ('Music DVD Soars Globally; Live Shows Are Top Sellers'), Michael Jackson's Number Ones was the world's #3 top-selling music DVD of 2003. Since the #5 top-selling music DVD of 2003 (Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin - DVD) shifted 1.5 million units, it's reasonable to assess that "Number Ones" has shifted over that amount to date.

Excerpt from article...

Music DVD Soars Globally; Live Shows Are Top Sellers

By Juliana Koranteng

LONDON - Worldwide music DVD sales are on a roll.

Considered a novelty format only two years ago, DVD has turned into a moneymaker during a low point in audio music sales.

Investments in marketing, coupled with the availabillity of compelling content from the majors, have fueled the format's popularity. Retailer willingness to move music DVDs from the movie section to the audio section has also helped.

Now, labels are cranking up their investments and release schedules to help sustain consumer interest in the format.

"The major record companies are latching onto it and exploiting it fully," says Keith Jopling, London-based director of market research at the International Federation of the Phonograhic Industry.

2003 sales figures show impressive growth for the carrier. Even as every other format the IFPI examined fell in retail value terms, DVD sales jumped 67% in value to $1.8 billion in 2003.

In unit terms, DVD sales leaped to 106 million last year from 67 million in 2002.

Although music represented only 7% of global DVD unit sales last year, according to figures from U.K-based research group Screen Digest Video Intelligence, it became the fastest-growing DVD category.

The growth in the international live-music business has helped spur DVD sales. About 60% of units the majors sold last year featured live concerts, vs. 25% that were video compilations, according to IFPI.

The world's top-selling DVDs in 2003 were Coldplay's "Live 2003" (EMI), U2's "Go Home/Live From Slane Castle" (Universal), Michael Jackson's "Number Ones" (Sony), Avril Lavigne's "My World" (BMG), and "Led Zeppelin-DVD" (Warner Vision International).

MOVING BY NUMBERS

According to Warner Vision International (WWI), global shipments of the Zeppelin title have reached 1.5 million units to date. Slightly less than 50% of shipments were in the United States.

Hey guys - These are counted as single sales obviously. And yes, Soundscan tracks them.

For Digital Downloads, the certications are as follows:

Gold - 100,000 downloads
Platinum - 200,000 downloads

Therefore, as you can see, "Thriller" needs to sell over 32,478 downloads to achieve a gold digital certification.

Hey hope - Regarding you inquiry in the other thread, please check the first page in this thread to see MJ's Soundscan totals. The figures aren't up to date but they give you a good idea nonetheless.

Thanks guys... :pirate:

Hey amit, I found something on the UKMIX forum that might interests you.

Member Basil said:

"I found the following figures from a 1992 copy of Q Magazine. To resolve which was the best selling UK album they approached the record companies and got definite figures on the following titles. Remember this is 13 years ago

Sgt Pepper 4,250,000

Bad 4,051,030
comprised 3,796,030 in shops and 255,000 through the Britannia record club

Brothers in Arms 3,610,651
comprised 3,334,392 in shops and 276,259 through the record club

Thriller 3,177,776
comprised 2,995,776 in shops and 182,000 through the record club.

At a really conservative estimate these titles have sold around 50,000 a year since 1992 which means theoretically you could add at least 650,000 to these totals.

for example,

in 2004 these titles sold the following in the UK

Sgt Pepper - about 50,000
Bad - 56,209
Brothers in Arms - not on list
Thriller - 134,729

Michael Charts In Two 'Greatest Ever' Polls

Monday, February 07, 2005

Twenty-two years after the revolutionary music video that is Thriller first appeared on TV screens worldwide, it has once again been voted the greatest video of all time!

Channel 4 in the UK held a nationwide vote to find The 100 Greatest Pop Videos of all time and the three Michael Jackson short films eligible for entry all charted high. The results were announced one by one during a show that lasted over four hours long, and aired Sunday evening (6th).

As well as Thriller topping the list at No.1, 1983's Billie Jean took a place in the Top 10 at No.7 and Michael's 1995 duet with sister Janet, Scream, entered at No.12.

The Top 20 Greatest Pop Videos (as voted for by the UK public) are as follows:

1. Michael Jackson: Thriller
2. Peter Gabriel: Sledgehammer
3. A-ha: Take on Me
4. Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody
5. Madonna: Like a Prayer
6. Robbie Williams: Rock DJ
7. Michael Jackson: Billie Jean
8. The Verve: Bittersweet Symphony

10. Nirvana: Smells Like Teen Spirit

This vote proves (once again!) to Michael's critics that he is still the undisputed (and quite frankly untouchable) King of Pop!

You have to know that France's phonographic industry doesn't have greater distinction than Diamond certification ( no 2x diamond,...).

However, it is said that Thriller has actually sold over 3 million copies in France ( worth 3x Diamond if such a certification existed ), making it the #1 selling international album of all time in France and #2 overall, behind Celine Dion's 1995 D'Eux ( which spent 44 weeks on top of French album chart and sold over 4 million).

Dangerous sold 2 million, History and Bad 1.5 million.
Invincible actually sold over 600.000 copies, including 166.000 copies in its first week, the highest first week sales for a foreign album in France's history.

Otherwise, singlewise, MJ is the only artist with French superstar Michel Sardou that generated 4 million-selling singles in France, with Beat It being his highest seller, at 1.2 million copies sold.

Here is the official SNEP list for the 100 best selling singles in France's history.
