Hey guys - During the post Easter week, you'll notice that alot of titles posted sales decreases. However, for some reason, Invincible saw a notable gain, as did the double-disc HIStory. Elsewhere, Thriller hung on as Jackson's #1 seller for the 3rd week in a row (remaining entrenched in the Top 15 of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Chart) while Number Ones shifted just under 4,000 units. Meanwhile, the Number Ones DVD dropped 20-25 on the Billboard Comprehensive Music Videos Chart selling over 2,000 units last week.

23. Hollywood: 38 (-14%)
24. What It Feels Like For a Girl: 36 (+177%)
25. Love Profusion: 34 (-17%)

Notes: The Immaculate Collection drops to its lowest tally this year (I believe), while GHV2 rebounds to 500+ units/week. The debut album sees a decent boost, and Ray of Light continues to hold up well. Erotica and Bedtime Stories see the largest percentage declines. The Immaculate Collection video continues to do decently.

CHER - 5451 units
(excluding Live Farewell Tour CD)

1. Very Best of Cher: 2,374 (-44%)
2. Very Best of Cher (Video): 899 (-17%)

9. Believe: 116 (+5%)
10. Best of Cher-Millennium Collection (first edition): 110 (-12%)
11. Live in Concert (video, 1999): 87 (-8%)

Notes: Very Best of Cher sees a pretty big drop; I'm guessing that for purposes of RIAA certs, the Deluxe edition would be lumped with the regular version- so this album should be eligible for 3 platinum in the not-so-distant future.

JANET JACKSON - 3,373 units

1. Design Of A Decade 1986/1996 (album): 724 (-7%)
2. Damita Jo: 570 (+7%)

11. All For You (CD/DVD): 42 (-28%)

Notes: Damita Jo registers a slight gain, while Control sees a notable one. Design Of A Decade again is her top seller- as it should be (though the numbers should be higher).

13. Through the Rain: 51 (-7%)
14. Emotions: 41 (+28%)
15. MTV Unplugged: 14 (-22%)

Notes: A decent week, with -of all albums- Glitter seeing the biggest percentage increase. Sales should see their biggest impact the week the new album hits.

WHITNEY HOUSTON - 3,213 units

1. The Greatest Hits (2 CD): 1,844 (+15%)
2. The Bodyguard: 432 (+17%)

"I Want You Back" Voted Top Dance Hit

LONDON (Reuters) - The Jackson 5's "I want You Back" is the song most likely to entice British drinkers to put down their pints and storm the dance floor, according to a poll on Friday.

The 25-year-old hit starring a fresh faced Michael Jackson topped a survey of 5,000 customers at the Walkabout chain of pubs.

"Waiting for a Star to Fall," the 1988 track covered by Sunset Strippers earlier this year was second.

"Is This the Way to Amarillo" released by Tony Christie in 1971 was rated third. He teamed up with Peter Kay to re-record the song this year taking it to number one in the UK charts.

Beyonce's 2003 "Crazy in Love" was fourth and Girls Aloud's 2004 hit "Love Machine" nipped in at number ten.

Steve Ackerman, executive producer of Hit40 UK, a radio chart show, said despite the range of artists covered in the poll, there was one common thread.

"What they all have in common is an instantly recognisable opening or a highly catchy and singable chorus that gets everybody onto the dance floor in high spirits, belting out the lyrics into their fictitious microphones," he said.

Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" forced its way into fifth position, while a raft of 1980s chart-toppers propped up the table in places six through nine -- Guns 'n' Roses's "Sweet Child of Mine" at number six, The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)" at number seven, Bryan Adams's 1985 hit "Summer of '69" at eight and Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" ninth.

Beatles Earn Landmark 6th RIAA Diamond Award

http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_...t_id=1000910732

With U.S. shipments of 10 million copies certified in April by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for the Beatles' "1," the group has become the first act to earn six of the organization's diamond awards. Released in 2000, the Apple/Capitol single-disc set collects 27 of the Fab Four's U.S. and U.K. No. 1 hits.

The group's biggest U.S. release remains 1968's "The Beatles," which was last certified by the RIAA in February 2001 for U.S. shipments of 19 million copies. It is followed by the 1973 compilations "The Beatles 1967-1970" (16 million) and "The Beatles 1962-1966" (15 million), 1969's "Abbey Road" (12 million) and 1967's "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (11 million).

The only act close to matching the Beatles' feat is Led Zeppelin, which has five diamond-level titles, while Garth Brooks has four. The Eagles have three diamond titles, including "Their Greatest Hit 1971-1975," which remains the best-selling album of all time, certified at 28 million copies. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" is in second place, having last month been certified for 27 million copies shipped.

Several albums reached multi-platinum plateaus in April, led by Alan Jackson's "Greatest Hits, Vol. II" (Arista Nashville) and Nickelback's "Silver Side Up" (Roadrunner), which are now certified at six times platinum for shipments of 6 million copies.

In an impressive display of popularity, 50 Cent's chart-topping sophomore album "The Massacre" reached quadruple-platinum in its first RIAA accounting, conducted just one month after its release. The Aftermath/Interscope album debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 in March and held the post for six consecutive weeks. 50's 2003 debut, "Get Rich or Die Tryin'," is six times platinum.

R&B artist Ciara and rock act the Killers earned their first multi-platinum designations. Her "Goodies" (LaFace) and their "Hot Fuss" (Island) were both certified double-platinum.

Notes: Some notable percentage gains for some of the albums. You'll notice that the recently recertified 27X platinum Thriller and Number Ones CD's are running almost neck and neck sales wise. It should be interesting to see if Number Ones regains the #1 spot next week. Also, the Number Ones DVD holds at #13 on the Billboard Comprehensive Music Videos Chart while Thriller maintains its Top 20 placement on the BB R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Chart and possibly Top 50 of the BB Pop Catalog Chart.

11. Design of a Decade 1986/1996 (Video): 27 (-20%)

Notes: Design Of A Decade remains JJ's best-selling title, but its sales (as well as those for the video of the same name) continue to be disappointing. Not sure what caused the spark for Rhythm Nation 1814 - maybe a mark-down?

Also, something worthy of note is that Number Ones will surpass 900,000 units scanned over the next few weeks. The album will likely scan 1 million units by years end. Elsewhere, the Number Ones DVD holds firmly in the Top 15 of the Billboard Comprehensive Music Videos Chart while Thriller maintains its Top 20 placement on the BB R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Chart and possibly Top 50 of the BB Pop Catalog Chart. 21. Bedtime Stories: 40 (-32%)
22. I'm Breathless: 41 (-15%)

Notes: Not a bad week for the albums. Biggest percentage gainers are Ray Of Light and Like A Virgin, which see nice bumps. The Madonna album just keeps increasing (Iw onder if it's being marketed somewhere like True Blue had been several weeks back). The Immaculate Collection sees a little bit of an increase, and GHV2 holds steady. The three concert videos also post gains (albeit minor ones).

10. All For You (DVD): 45 (-24%)
11. Design of a Decade 1986/1996 (DVD/video): 27 (-)

Notes: No major Mother’s Day bumps for Ms. Jackson. Rhythm Nation 1814 manages another strong week, even outscanning janet. for the first time since - well, probably ever.

WHITNEY HOUSTON - 2,578 units

1. The Greatest Hits (Album): 1,250 (+19%)

Michael Jackson Sales Continue To Thrill

by Paul Cashmere

13May 2005

Michael Jackson's back catalogue is continuing to sell consistently during his trial.

In the last 3 months, the Jackson catalogue has sold a further 195,597 units with 'Thriller' accounting 56,117 of those sales.

'Thriller' received it's last Platinum certification in 2000 when it achieved sales of 26 million in the USA.

The special edition version of the album released in 2001 has sold an additional 799,635 units. It still trails The Eagles 'Their Greatest Hits' which was certified 28 times platinum in 2002 for sales of more than 28 million units.

However, Jackson is outselling both Madonna and his sister Janet. The Madonna catalogue has turned over 88,057 units in the last three months. Michael's sister Janet Jackson has sold 48,655 units in the same period.

Madonna's biggest selling albums to date are 'Like A Virgin' and 'The Immaculate Collection'. Both have sold 10 million plus.

Janet's biggest albums are 'Rhythm Nation' and 'Janet'. Both have sold 6 million plus in the USA.

quick question, if its a million units per platinum certfications, and HIStory is 7X platinum, that would mean about 7 million copies sold, but soundscan says HIStory has shipped 2.532 million copies.

and greatest hits HIStory vol 1 has sold 820,360 copies according to soundscan and yet its eligable for platinum because its sold over 1 million units?

i can guarentee this question sounds stupid to some, but im a little in the dark so if someone could enlighten me id appreciate it.

Hey Thriller - No, it's not a stupid question at all.

According to the RIAA, Michael's 2-CD 30 track HIStory album qualifies for double cerfication for each "packaged unit" sold.

3.5 million units have been shipped to U.S retail/record clubs. Therefore, 3.5 X 2 = 7.

As for Greatest Hits HIStory Volume I - that title has shipped over 1 million units to retail/record clubs. It's easy to discern this since it's SoundScan total is 820k to date.

You've very welcome Dani! :kickass2:

Robbie makes most successful top 50

Robbie Williams has become one of the top 50 most successful acts of all time.

The former Take That star has eclipsed the likes of Madness, Genesis, Bruce Springsteen and Celine Dion in the Guinness World Records list.

Elvis Presley remains the most successful act of all time, with a total of 2,463 weeks in the UK singles and album charts.

Cliff Richard remains in second place with 1,972 weeks, followed by The Beatles (1,749) and Queen (1,725).

Williams has spent an average of 78 weeks per year on the Official UK Singles and Albums Charts since he embarked on his solo career.

If he continues accumulating weeks at the same rate, with no further releases from Elvis, he will overtake Elvis as the King of Rock 'n' Roll in 2029.

Madonna remains in fifth place in the list, from the Book of British Hit Singles and Albums, with 1,653 weeks in the chart.

Michael Jackson is eighth and has swapped places with David Bowie, who was eighth last year and is now in ninth place.

Williams was 51st in the chart last year, and now makes 43rd place, just below the Eurythmics, according to the compilers, with 682 weeks in the UK singles and album charts.

Book of British Hit Singles and Albums assistant editor James Bradley said: "For Robbie to continue to speed up the chart so strongly is a fantastic achievement and proves that he is still winning new fans while keeping the old faithful ones.

11. HIStory: Past, Present, and Future, Book I (2-CD): 107 (113) (-6%)

12. Blood on the Dance Floor: 19 (16) (+19%)

Notes: Not much to report this week as catalog sales have taken a hit across the board for most superstar acts (Mariah Carey being the obvious exception due to the success and visibility of her latest project). Nonetheless, the week wouldn't be complete without mentioning that the Number Ones album has crossed the 900k mark at retail. The album has scanned 902,656 units to be exact. Will it reach 1 million scanned by years end? Let's wait and see. Meanwhile, the recently RIAA recertified and Top 20 R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog album Thriller has scanned 808,525 units to date.

MARIAH CAREY - 186,793 units (7,386 units excluding The Emancipation Of Mimi)
(excluding Live at Madison Square Garden DVD and "It's Like That" and "We Belong Together" digital single sales)

1. The Emancipation Of Mimi: 179,407 (+2%) (#3 on BB200)
2. Greatest Hits: 2,719 (+5%)

14. Emotions: 49 (-20%)
15. MTV Unplugged: 32 (-43%)
16. Merry Christmas: 7 (-13%)

Notes: The Mariah juggernaut continues, with a pretty good week following her Oprah appearance/performance. Look for The Emancipation Of Mimi to return to the pole position on the Billboard 200 next week.

MADONNA - 5,163 units

1. The Immaculate Collection: 2,555 (-3%)
2. GHV2: 336 (+3%)
3. Like a Virgin: 220 (+11%)

14. Ciao, Italia: Live From Italy (Video): 69 (-4%)
15. Erotica: 65 (-17%)
16. Girlie Show: Live Down Under (Video): 62 (+2%)
17. Drowned World Tour 2001 (Video): 60 (+43%)
18. You Can Dance: 46 (-16%)
19. Bedtime Stories: 49 (+36%)
20. Me Against the Music: 37 (-21%)
21. What it Feels Like For a Girl: 37 (+37%)
22. Evita: 32 (-18%)
23. Nothing Fails: 32 (+7%)
24. I'm Breathless: 31 (-26%)

Notes: Some of the lowest sellers drop back more, though Bedtime Stories rebounds somewhat. The Immaculate Collection is still above 2,500 units, but it will be nice when it's back above 3K (and even 4K, where it hasn't been in some time). GHV2 looked dangerously close to dropping below 300 last week, but keeps its head above those waters for the time being. Like A Prayer returns to 100+ units, and American Life is "hanging in there," as much as it should be by this point.

CHER - 4,529 units
(excluding Live Farewell Tour CD)

1. The Very Best of Cher (2 CD): 1,832 (-3%)
2. The Very Best of Cher (Video): 716 (+1%)

8. Half Breed: 124 (+10%)
9. Believe: 94 (-15%)
10. Live In Concert (Video, 1999): 79 (+20%)
11. Best of Cher - Millennium Collection (First Edition): 65 (-18%)
12. Love Hurts: 16 (-30%)
13. Living Proof: 15 (-35%)

Notes: The Very Best Of Cher looks to be settling into a stagnant total. Living Proof drops to a new low - it has scanned a little more than 497,000 units to date. If we look at drop-offs from album to album, she has the biggest among the "divas"- 3 million or so off of what Believe scanned (though that was her biggest album ever, as well, with sales she wasn't accustomed to seeing).

JANET JACKSON - 2,844 units

1. Design Of A Decade 1986/1996 (album): 585 (-10%)
2. Damita Jo: 395 (-9%)
3. janet.: 358 (-4%)
4. Rhythm Nation 1814: 355 (-9%)
5. From janet. To Damita Jo (Video): 346 (-4%)
6. All For You (album): 233 (+4%)
7. The Velvet Rope: 232 (+1%)
8. Live in Hawaii (Video): 148 (-18%)
9. Control: 124 (-17%)
10. All For You (CD/DVD): 45 (+22%)
11. Design of a Decade 1986/1996 (Video): 23 (-18%)

Notes: Things aren't looking all that pleasant on (Janet) Jackson Street, with Design Of A Decade dropping below 600 units (and the video to a mere 23!) Rhythm Nation 1814, meanwhile, continues to do better than usual (it may be discounted somewhere, not sure).

WHITNEY HOUSTON - 2,005 units

1. The Greatest Hits (Album): 952 (-12%)
2. The Bodyguard: 254 (-17%)
3. The Greatest Hits (Video): 182 (+26%)
4. The Preacher's Wife: 141 (+3%)
5. Whitney Houston: 130 (-15%)
6. Whitney: 104 (+27%)
7. My Love is Your Love (Album): 91 (+3%)
8. Just Whitney: 87 (+12%)
9. The Star Spangled Banner: 41 (-47%)
10. One Wish: 8 (+700%)
11. It’s Not Right But it’s Okay: 6 (-33%)
12. My Love is Your Love (single): 5 (+67%)
13. I'm Your Baby Tonight (Album): 4 (-76%)

Notes: One Wish - The Holiday Album sees several more buyers, resulting in the huge percentage gain! ;) Meanwhile, I'm Your Baby Tonight drops back to its more usual levels while the GH video and Whitney enjoy decent gains

The One, Dangerous: The Short Films, etc.), material recorded with The Jacksons, and Motown era solo and Jackson 5 albums. Weekly sales information for those titles is not available at this time.

4. Greatest Hits: HIStory Vol. 1: 1,121 (970) (+16%)

5. Off the Wall (Special Edition): 684 (579) (+18%)

6. HIStory on Film- Vol. 2 (Video): 344 (316) (+9%)

7. Greatest Hits: HIStory (Video): 309 (341) (-9%)

11. HIStory: Past, Present, and Future, Book I (2-CD): 98 (107) (-8%)

12. Blood on the Dance Floor: 40 (19) (+111%)

Notes: Good news as Number Ones regains the #1 position in MJ's Weekly Top Sellers Chart. Elsewhere, Greatest Hits: HIStory Volume I is back to shifting over 1,000 units per week. Thriller and the Number Ones DVD meanwhile continue to exemplify their solidity. How will the album sales be affected by today's long overdue wonderful news? Let's wait and see. :D

MARIAH CAREY - 180,375 units (8,375 units excluding The Emancipation Of Mimi)
(excluding Live at Madison Square Garden DVD and "It's Like That" and "We Belong Together" digital single sales)

1. The Emancipation Of Mimi: 172,000 (-4%) (#1 BB200 and #1 BB R&B/Hip-Hop Albums)
2. Greatest Hits (2 CD): 2,900 (+7%)
3. #1's: 2,331 (+23%)
4. Remixes (2 CD): 754 (+22%)
5. Charmbracelet: 453 (+16%)
6. Butterfly: 292 (-)
7. #1's (Video): 288 (+11%)
8. Music Box: 288 (+16%)

11. Around the World (Video): 185 (+9%)
12. Rainbow: 181 (+37%)
13. Mariah Carey: 150 (+6%)
14. Through the Rain (Single): 102 (+59%)
15. MTV Unplugged: 33 (+3%)
16. Emotions: 30 (-39%)

Notes: A solid week. The two GH compilations top 2K, and Remixes sees a decent boost. Rainbow sees the biggest percentage among the albums. Actually, just one album loses sales, and that is Emotions. The "Through The Rain" single rebounds to 100+ units. As we know, TEOM returned to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with roughly 172,000 units.

MADONNA - 5,276 units

1. The Immaculate Collection: 2,454 (-4%)
2. GHV2: 421 (+25%)
3. Like A Virgin: 218 (-1%)

21. Evita: 56 (+75%)
22. Nothing Fails (Single): 53 (+66%)
23. Love Profusion (Single): 42 (+40%)
24. Die Another Day (Single): 41 (+215%)
25. I'm Breathless (Single): 40 (+29%)

Notes: Madonna's The Immaculate Collection reaches its lowest weekly total of 2005 - if Madonna didn't have things planned for the rest of the year, I'd say it wason track for around 160,000 by year's end- though that number could be goosed by new projects. GHV2 returns to the 400+ mark (though still a weak number compared to Immaculate).

CHER - 5,676 units
(excluding Live Farewell Tour CD)

1. Very Best of Cher: 1,730 (-6%)

11. Best of Cher-Millennium Collection (first edition): 72 (+11%)
12. Living Proof: 35 (+133%)
13. Love Hurts: 20 (+25%)

Notes: Not sure why Cher's Farewell Tour video saw the huge percentage gain it did...

JANET JACKSON - 3,352 units

1. Design Of A Decade 1986/1996 (album): 718 (+23%)
2. Damita Jo: 500 (+27%)

Number Ones - ARIA 40 Urban Albums
Week #81 (12/06/05): #36

hi amit, its me again, the idiot who knows nothing about album certifications, with more seemingly stupid questions :p

blood on the dance floor as sold a quarter million units, but was certified platinum in october 2000, so do dance remix albums have some different system other than the platinum-per-million system, or were the RIAA high on something that day?

in the case of HIStory, when it being a double disc set means that only 500,000 units need to be sold per platinum as oppose to 1,000,000, if its sold 2.5 million copies that should be 5X platinum, but HIStory is 7X platinum. the same can be said for dangerous, which is 7X platinum when 5.8 million copies have been sold.

thanks

CuzThisisThriller, the certification process is based on what it is sold from Sony Music to the shops and not on what is bought by people. What is bought by people like U and me is given by Soundscan. So, if you make the difference between certification figures and soundscan figures, you have the quantities that are in shops and not sold yet. Is it clear now?
