Michael - The Great Album Debate

Absolutely agree. You just can't ignore the fact that Jason's trademarks are all over these songs. Snort snort.

And watching Michael work in the studio with Barry Gibb, singing his lines to himself, taking it all in, making it as perfect as he could and we only saw a few seconds.

I can't imagine him sitting down doing the same thing with Breaking News, making little revisions and singing it to himself. Such a ridiculous image, to me.

^^ Exactly! Other people had brought this up before, but can you really, truly picture in your head, visualize Michael singing those Cascio songs? I can't...Just no....But, I can definitely picture him singing Best of Joy, BTM, Much Too Soon...I mean, the visual is clear as day in my head..no questions asked...

Yup, I agree. Those are definitely him! There are slight differences with them compared to others! Not sure if Best of joy, BTM and Much too soon where recorded much earlier and his voice has just changed in pitch etc. but im saying what i believe is that its not him!

In the Cascio songs, while Jason Malachi might sound a bit different than in his first album and Critical, but he still leaves his trademarks everywhere.

That's definitely true. But personally, I do not really think he sounds all that different. I still don't really get the flow argument: I honestly think the differences in 'flow' (which are minimal imo) are due to songwriting rather than technique.

If ivy is still reading this thread, I am interested in hearing her opinion in response to my (re-)post at pg 1013 (I think) where I posted some examples of Jason which imo show he is perfectly capable of delivering a flow similar to a song like Monster. I believe this is about the 3rd time I ask , and I am sorry to keep asking, but I am just interested in her (or anyone else who believes Jason could not be the singer on the Cascio songs because of a difference in flow) thinking, because I do not quite understand it.

Furthermore, there was a discussion regarding the point that Malachi could have recorded as many takes as he needed to get the flow the way it should. Pentum pointed out the instances where the lead vocals overlap, which thus show that they were recorded separately. But this of course does not necessarily mean that all the lines that do not overlap were recorded in one take - they could still be recorded separately but simply not mixed in a way where they overlap.

I can't imagine him sitting down doing the same thing with Breaking News, making little revisions and singing it to himself.

 MJ taking a shower there one day, mumbling Breaking News to himself and having a eureka moment when it dawns on him that the acoustics of the shower are unparalleled.

Agreed. :rollin:

Yep, I think we can all agree that THIS is damaging to Michael's legacy far more than these tracks. I mean, have you HEARD this mix!? Personally, I think a modern remix of the song could be good, but not a solo Jermaine version!

I think it takes an extraordinary amount of talent, courage or shamelessness to cover a Michael Jackson song. One needs to either be really good or have really thick-skin.

There is a reason why a Michael Jackson song is seldomly covered. It's because his songs are very difficult to sing. Who can do his songs justice? I remember watching the Grammy in 2010. Smokey Robinson, Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood and Usher did a Earth Song tribute. They tried their best, but the result was underwhelming. When Michael's vocals kicked in, the song came to life again. And, Celine Dion is probably one of the best vocalists in the industry these days. I recently listened to R. Kelley's version of YANA from his latest album. Oh boy... Michael made that song his own.

I'm not saying people should not cover Michael's songs. But, I always wonder why? What can they add to the masterpieces? They certainly can't make the songs better. So, what's the point?

When Michael covered Come Together, he made the song his own. I still much prefer Michael's version than the Beatles' version. May be it's because I'm never a Beatles fan. I have heard many versions of Smile, including Diana Ross'. And, no one, absolutely no one, can make Smile that painfully joyous to listen to. Yes, it's a complicated feeling. The song pulls my heartstrings and tears my eyes; yet, I can't resist to it. The vocals are just too luxurious and beautiful. It's pain and pleasure the same time. Who else can sing like that?

When I see people covers Michael's songs in one of the talent shows, I always have fixed feelings. On one hand, I am excited to see a Michael Jackson song being played. On the other hand, I don't want to see people butcher his songs. :sigh:

Yeah, I really don't like how sometimes in some musical competition where they discover new ''artists'', they all sing We Are They World. I can say honestly, I don't like it. I mean, there was only one group of true artists that made that song. It shouldn't be touched. No one will ever do better than original 1985 chorus.
Although Michael said that he wanted very easy melody that everyone including 5 years old child could sing it, I don't think it's good idea to touch original masterpiece. I didn't much like WATW 25 too.

The more i listen to KYHU, the more i believe its Michael. Idk is it just me that thinks that?

Hmm... I'm the exact opposite. At first, I thought KYHU was the best out of the three. I actually quite enjoyed KYHU at the beginning. But, the song doesn't grow on me. I never feel the urge to listen to it now.

I listened to KYHU and KTF back to back once. If you do that, you'll notice the difference is more than noticeable.

Dont laugh at me. Maybe its just me. I like KYHU, maybe i can hear things you guys cant. who knows? Anyways, if you look in the MICHAEL booklet. I found it odd how in Monster it list: Background Vocals: Michael Jackson, James Porte. It has no mention of Lead Vocals.

I absolutely cannot listen to KYHU and then, say, MTS back to back and conclude it's the same person. That voice is just way too different and is just a completely different person. Just, no way...
