Michael's heavenly voice

We now know of Dream Away .

To Make My Father Proud ... Happy, Music And Me, Too Young, All The Things Your Are* ... actually pretty much the whole Music And Me album, Wings of My Love , When You Wish Upon A Star (the beginning), When We Grow Up ... (and I know I'm only citing a few that are less likely to be cited... but yeah, Too Young was cited.)

* Question: I'm actually wondering why All The Things Your Are is like never mentioned when people talk about his greatest performances... Is it just that it is a type of singing I like? Or is it underrated?

I'm treading cautiously here bc I have a habit of claiming not to know certain songs and then when I go and track them down it turns out I do, lol. So the title 'All The Things You Are' doesn't ring a bell but we'll see. I will def go and seek it out. You have got me intrigued.

As when you didn't remember Blanket Jackson ;-)

All The Things You Are is simply the third track of the album Music And Me.

:ROFLMAO:

But no! I mean, getting over-excited bc I thought Best of Joy was a song that was new to me. In fact, I'd been aware of it for years. In my defence I would say this usually happens with songs I'm not keen on. My brain simply refuses to give headspace to songs I don't really like or are lukewarm about. They just get dumped.

I don't have the album and haven't yet listened to all the tracks. I still have a lot of catching up to do but that's a good thing. Stuff to look forward to? Can't be bad.

om - freakin' - g!!!

Bill Withers meets Motown. Couldn’t get much better.

Edit: What am I talking about? 😅 (Was thinking of Ain’t No Sunshine!)

Sorry, I must be tired. But I do love the song. The harmonies, ah, the harmonies…

It's a Broadway song from 1939, many covers exist in very different styles... including
Yeah, that was so cool. Written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. Michael must have been so stoked to record that one. He loved all that stuff.

No wonder it's so well written.

I’m all familiar with it, played it myself for decades. I just need to learn not to write when tired! 😖

I tried to find the actual original on YouTube ... not sure if it exists, the earliest I found was a cover already, but I would be interested to hear it...

What about Earth Song and Will You Be There? Agree with all the rest too, of course! 🥰

Oh! Man In The Mirror, I Just Can't Stop Loving You... Oh, I could go on and on!!

Tell me about it. I posted a Bad era photo in the Thriller era thread. As you do! :ROFLMAO:
Lol, didn't I call you out on that one? I can vaguely remember that happening. :ROFLMAO: To make it equal, I thought Aretha Franklin was signed to Motown... Definitely my absolutely finest moment! Granted, not Michael-related (other than the Motown part, and only indirectly), but I still feel a bit ashamed of that, pffff.

No, I think it was sw or Hiker. Not that it matters. I totally owned it. What can you do? You just have to embrace the madness, lol.

I didn't even delete the photo. I left it there for future MJJC peeps to look at in horrified disbelief. The madness is strong!

I don't think I did because I was too busy being run over by a truck and left for dead. Though it's always possible! If I did, I'm sure I did so in a desperate, pathetic way lol.

I would enjoy Thriller and Bad era photos being posted on every single thread. Including those about other artists or world events. There is simply no situation that would not be improved by Thriller or Bad era photos being plastered as far as the eye can see.

It was definitely you. You were being incredibly polite and restrained, IIRC.

Hiker, most delightfully, said this:

"looks more like bad era 🤣🤣🤣 you can just post this fine pic everywhere to be sure"

Hiker is BOSS!

Also, handy reminder. When I posted the 'wrong' photo I had just spent 4 hours deeply immersed in Michael vids on TikTok. The madness was REALLY strong, lol.

I know we all say this from time to time but I SO would love this. In an alternative universe. I wouldn't wanna alienate other peeps on the board who aren't so bothered about photos of Michael - I believe there are such people in the world, I've heard tales. But, for me, it would work perfectly.

Including those about other artists or world events.
Yes. So much 'yes' to this.

There is simply no situation that would not be improved by Thriller or Bad era photos being plastered as far as the eye can see.
This sentence just sent me off into a 10 minute reverie. You've got a physics exam - which is offering bonus points if you tackle the question on Newton's gravitational law? Photos of Michael doing the SC lean would perk up my interest quite nicely, lol. You're an English Lit major? Well, @wendijane has already linked the poetry of Chaucer to Michael. Let's throw in a photo of Michael to help people's Chaucer appreciation! You're considering signing up for a module in The Philosophy of International Relations? Well, my advice would be - JUST DON'T! - but, if you must, please note in Weeks 3, 5, 6 and 9 we will be discussing the political and humanitarian content of Michael's lyrics.

Sorry! I've moved on from photos to just any and every way of getting Michael into every single second of every day. Photos, lyrics! Let's just do the whole shebang. :D

Interesting thread, here. I would say that there are quite a few songs of Michael’s * in which he sang with an “angelic”-sounding voice (*that he either had recorded, sung or performed LIVE —— no matter how old he was or at which stage of his life and career he was, when he had first sung, recorded and performed them —— whether or not he had anything else to do with them besides the singing, recording and performance, as the songs will forever be associated with him, regardless. . . .which we should keep in mind).

When one refers to an “angelic”-sounding or “heavenly” voice, I strongly believe that the words “light-timbred,” “soft,” “delicate,” “ethereal”° (°“ethereal,” coincidentally, having been one of the words that even Michael, himself, had used in explaining his demonstration of how such a voice would sound, in the “out-takes” of the rehearsals for his “This Is It” shows) are immediately thought of. And yes, of course. . . .my most favorite word to describe this type of voice —— BEAUTIFUL —— would be apt to describe how the tone of his voice sounded on certain particular songs. Especially, when he also used the highest Upper Registers of his voice extensively, not counting the use of “exclamations”• (•such as “Whoo-Hoo!!!,” “Hee-Hee!!!” and “Aoww!!!” in almost every other line/lyric of a fast-paced song, which can get really annoying to constantly hear, at times, when you just would much rather have heard him singing the lyrics of a song straight through).

With that being said, the songs which have this “heavenly”/“angelic”/“ethereal” tone are a lot of the slower-paced ballads, rather than the much-faster-paced material. From his lead vocals on Maybe Tomorrow to early “Motown” solo songs like the theme from the movie, BEN; From Push Me Away, Your Ways —— not exactly a ballad, but still. . . . —— Give It Up, Be Not Always and Time Waits for No One with his brothers, to solo adult songs like It’s the Falling in Love, I Can’t Help It, Human Nature, Scared of the Moon, Someone in the Dark, the W.A.T.W.Demo (previously unreleased, but this song is part of the “T.U.C.” [“The Ultimate Collection”] boxed-set that came out in 2004) and the song’s more than ten-minutes-long solo “U.S.A. for Africa” rehearsal footage since uploaded and posted on “YouTube,”® all the way up to the 2001 LIVE30th Anniversary Celebration” version of I’ll Be There (during the final reunion of the Jackson brothers), Butterflies, Best of Joy, the original boxed-set Demo version of The Way You Love Me (not the one on the “MICHAEL” album, I don’t really like it) and the last duet of I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, from This Is It, my most favorite song in the entire film. Are any of these songs good examples of what was being sung in the type of voice discussed in this thread? I would like to know if they are.

There is very little singing on this video. Michael is singing a snippet of 'What The World Needs Now' by Burt Bacharach (R.I.P.). Posting this as a tribute to Burt and bc I don't know of any other clip where we have Michael singing a song by BB.

His vocals here, as brief as they are, definitely qualify as 'heavenly'. ❤️

@filmandmusic - I'm sure you've seen this before but, anyway, the time stamp for the singing is 23m 30s - 24m.

@wendijane - bc it's Dangerous, bc it's heavenly and bc you can never have too much of this video!

@zinniabooklover and the world does need love ! even moreso than ever , but yeah being Ms Faye not in a like dirty way , i would love that position to see and learn and do his highlighting and shading, Stroke that brush up his cheekbones , his eye shadow and the eyeliner , that always got me the eyeliner zin , loved it on men better than on chicks really .i don't mean stupid guy liner from early 2000s either lol yeah its a nice video and a good nod to Burt's infectious melodies. R.I.P to Burt Bacharach the 20th century genius composer of many a modern tune.

I am NOT O.K.
Thank you, @turtleneck_sweater. Thank you SO much, for sharing and posting this clip of these BEAUTIFUL background vocals. They are absolutely lovely. Of course, Michael had already learned very well what he learned from the “greats” he had long studied, looked up to and admired (such as Marvin Gaye and other former fellow label-mates/colleagues/co-workers at Motown, who had strongly influenced his later vocal and singing-style, along with the use of other in-studio techniques). As you notice, I say that other artists had “influenced” Michael, not that he had ever knowingly and deliberately copycatted off of anyone whose career existed long before his own, the way many of today’s so-called “stars” have done with his style of singing, dancing, etc. He was an ORIGINAL, he was UNIQUE in his own way, and not some form of the “new”/“next-generation” version of his previous-generation musical-career and show-business predecessors. There is a big difference between directly copycatting and mimicking someone else, and a young individual being INFLUENCED BY another person who is much older (and then, the “student” learning from the “teacher,” if you will, to go on and do things on his/her/“theirown).
