It doesn’t have to do with age, but with self-confidence.

For example, MJ was older in 2002 but that didn’t prevent him at all from giving two spectacular performances (American Bandstand, 20.04.02 & Apollo Theater, 24.04.02).

For me, his appearance during the "MTV Video Music Awards 2001" was one of MJ’s highlights in the ‘00s:

He was very self conscious. If I was on stage in front of that many people I'd cover my mouth with my hand for a cold sore! Never mind a hole in my lip.

Lord almighty, when you're away from this place for a while you really forget how touchy some people on here are. What's wrong with saying he had a hole in his lip? It's not like I'm saying he had plastic surgery or anything like that. Give me a break...
 
See with the *NSYNC thing, doesn't it kinda look like MJ missed his cues? Like he explodes a little bit after the music comes in, and finishes with a point after the music stops.

That could easily have been his intent. It just looked a bit like he missed it.
 
I think the NSYNC thing was a very bad performance. His improv had really fallen off at that point.

I've always loved this. He's in concert mode - in his element, and he just lets it loose. I'm pretty sure part of it was queued/rehearsed (thanks to both of them being perfectionists, not just Michael), but it's just open enough to see that Michael and James really admired each other and were confident in themselves.

PLUS, that outfit is A+ and I love that Michael is pretty much losing his shit over James the way we do over him. When I first saw this I remember thinking "Ha, welcome to the club, sucker!" :)

I know that MJ must have made some mistakes during that choreography.

But that was not my point of course.

MJ looked young, healthy, fresh, energetic & self-confident, so, it was a very promising appearance for the rest of the decade…
