I want to make a list of every single song that Michael has done that has left a cultural impact, in order to both satsify by autism and to create the defintive catalogue that embodies Michael as an artist and cementing his legacy, having a greater understanding of his role in pop culture. I define 'general public' as the average person walking on the street who you may ask about Michael's songs, who aren't necessarily fans, but they know the work. I think there'd be only about 5-10 songs that the 'general public' would be able to mention.

Nah @HIStoryguy. I hear WBSS literally almost every time they play Michael Jackson. And Human Nature and P.Y.T on the oldies, the latter at every party and wedding I've been to. Man in the Mirror they played at the grocery store I worked at nearly every day, and if not that, then a countrified cover of it. They are very very popular.

The last 3, yeah, they're Gen Z hits.

Well, that's certainly a very long list... Most of which isn't important to average people.

To narrow it down, consider that a normal greatest hits album has about 20 songs on it. The problem with MJ was that he had such a long career and so many hits, that nobody can agree on what should go on. See HIStory (missed out Dirty Diana and Smooth Criminal), Essential (misses out Scream), Number Ones (misses out everything with the J5)...

Even for me, it depends on what mood I'm in. I'd probably go with the following (but if I came back tomorrow and did this again the list would probably be completely different):

i think its different now, considering everyone can stream whatever music they want, and not have to listen what is on the radio. i saw a guy older than me on the radio and he didnt even know WBSS! 😡😳 There was another REALLY EASY song that i thought everyone should know but i forgot which one it was :(

Take out I Just Can't Stop Loving You and Scream, add Shes Out of my Life and They Don't Care About Us.

Maybe include Heal The World, Earth Song, and Come Together.
 
I'll add "They Don't Care About Us" seeing as it became popular in more recent years, but most people remember "Scream" because it's the one song that MJ performed with his sister Janet as a duet. And it was the first song in history to debut at No.5 on the Hot 100; it's definitely staying.

"I Just Can't Stop Loving You" was a no.1 single, so I think it should stay. I don't think most casual listeners remember "She's Out of My Life". I would argue the song "Off the Wall" is more popular.

"Come Together" is a Beatles song. MJ's cover doesn't measure up to the original in popularity.

"Heal the World" flopped in the US. I don't even think most listeners in America know "Earth Song", seeing as it wasn't a single there.

I'll remove "Love Never Felt So Good". Best not to include posthumous remixes since MJ didn't work on them.

"Earth Song" wasn't released as a single in the US because Sony felt it would flop. I wonder how well it would have done if it was a single. That Joseph Vogel dude seems adamant that Sony was full of crap lol

They're still iconic based off performances. Anytime they bring up MJs Superbowl, they see that finale. Anytime someone mentions "This Is It", they bring up how that's the last song he performed.
