Taj Jackson's MJ Documentary - Updates and Discussion [MERGED]

I think now that Taj has the project funded he thinks it's a private affair, forgetting people donated. I do believe he is working hard on it but, perhaps with good reason, he is over paranoid about it being derailed. Square One found a home with no exclusive home content or rights waved by the estate so I'm sure Taj can find a platform too

I have considered this and I don't have an easy answer as to how he could manage that. Keep his donors informed without leaving the project open to derailment. It's difficult.

I do try to give him the benefit of the doubt and this is one of the reasons why. There must be a better way for him to handle the situation but, yes, it isn't an easy challenge he's set himself.

To be honest, if on his last YouTube live all Taj mentioned was the updates on the format, focus, and forthcoming funding for the docuseries, I don't think people would be so doubtful. It's the fact that he promised (and sort of made a big deal about) a press release on Michael's birthday with announcements. I've considered that for sure he could have some sort of unanticipated contractual/project concern with sharing information about it. But even in that case, I think he could have issued a statement just to reaffirm the updates he had already shared. It's the lack of follow through on a promised announcement and then total silence that strikes me as concerning. I was incredibly positive about this project up until this.

Didn't he say the press release didn't occur because he was busy organising parties?

Didn't he say the press release didn't occur because he was busy organising parties?
I thought that was one of his earlier excuses? Although that hardly absolves him. It's a crap 'excuse' to use at any time.

Didn't he say the press release didn't occur because he was busy organising parties?
And after organizing he was busy participating in said parties and after that he was busy recovering from hungovers from the parties and after all that he got into an existential crisis because of an abuse of alcoholic substances which made him depressed and mentally tired. He recovered now but is still suffering from burn out.

You have to cut him some slack he is working hard 🤠🥳

Watching Taj's livestream right now. His explanation for not releasing the press release is that he found out the estate was releasing press releases that day and he didn't want to compete with their announcement and have his buried. So he held off to find the right time. I sort of understand what he's saying, but I'm not sure why it couldn't have been communicated in some way. He does claim that it was written and ready to go and will definitely be released at some point soon, but didn't give a new time frame.

I'll try to include some other updates if there is anything worth sharing!

Ok, so one thing that's kind of interesting. He is talking about the Thriller documentary and how for his docuseries, his crew, his set, etc. it is important to him that not a single person doesn't believe in his innocence. So, if nothing else, this suggests it is for sure in production. So that's a relief!

Taj is talking about the Thriller Challenge. He's saying Michael's fans can help in various ways. Streaming, obvs, but also including requesting Michael's songs on radio. Specifically, requesting Thriller so as to get the song to No.1.

Thriller Challenge Oct 28 - Nov 3

Ok, so livestream just ended. Quick overview - Taj started out just talking about the press release debacle and apologizing for that, but reiterated several times how important this project is to him. Then he was joined by Andrew Green and they discussed the Thriller 40 challenge. Here's the thread for that challenge, if you aren't familiar with it.

Off and on throughout the conversation, Taj would make comments like the one I shared above, discussing his docuseries. My biggest concern was that it wasn't even in production and I feel fairly confident that it is now. He also said he doesn't want to oversell it, but that he's confident it's going to be really special. He reiterated that the estate is on board (I don't think that means they are involved, but I'm guessing maybe gave permission to use music?). He also said there are a lot of people involved in making this happen. The goal still seems to be for it to be released by the end of 2023. He did mention that he knows it has been a long time, but that we can still anticipate 2 press releases (the first being when he announces the project itself and the second when it's picked up by a streaming service) and he will begin sharing teasers at some point. Super vague on the timeline for all of this, but if what he said in the August live stream is still true, the project will be "complete" by the end of this year, so I'd anticipate maybe sometime in January the press release and maybe teasers may come out? All just a guess.

So in all, I'm not sure I learned anything "new" but I do feel a little better. The many asides he made about the project made it feel more real to me than it ever did before. So that's something I guess.

He said the Estate have 'allowed' him to work on this project. So I think, as you say, that might mean permission to include relevant material to make the project more substantial.

He also said there are a lot of people involved in making this happen. The goal still seems to be for it to be released by the end of 2023. I thought he seemed really keen for people not to expect anything in January. Not the docuseries itself, obvs, but maybe not even a press release? I might have got that bit wrong. We'll see.

I agree. Although I think I've had that experience in the past when he's talked about it. But I do feel slightly more hopeful. Slightly.

ahh, you may be right! I interpreted that as just being about the docuseries itself, but you may have a point. I would say it is probably safe to say there will be no press release BEFORE January, but we shouldn't necessarily expect one early in the year either. Good point.

I agree. Although I think I've had that experience in the past when he's talked about it. But I do feel slightly more hopeful. Slightly.
yeah, true. I felt that way in August and then that dissolved lol. Time will tell, I suppose! All I want and need is a high quality teaser...10 seconds is enough for me .Just any kind of professional, studio quality footage, and I think I'll be sold.

ymmd and I feel exactly the same. his LIVE was kind of convincing to me. He keeps everything behind closed doors and 1 teaser will be shared at some point... thats what I understood. lets see...

Ok, so I listened to the latest MJcast episode and wanted to share what Taj said about his docuseries:

They asked him some pointed questions, specifically, how many interviews he has done for the docuseries so far. He said he could answer that, but would rather not because of the impression it would give about his progress, implying, to me, that he hasn't completed too many yet. However, he followed this up by saying that what is unique about his docuseries is that rather than the narrative being built around interviews with people who knew Michael, he is building the narrative using archival footage instead, with the interviews supplementing and supporting that narrative. This is the first time I've heard him actually talk about the narrative structure of the project and, honestly, I kind of love what he said. I would much rather see archival footage of Michael that tells the story of who he was, plus I imagine he has enormous access to footage and I think a narrative structured in such a way could really be beautiful. As Taj explained, he thinks the best way to show people who Michael truly was is to actually show Michael to them. He also mentioned that Charles Thompson is a member of the team working on this documentary and implied that he is playing a crucial role in helping to structure the narrative effectively. I found this especially interesting because earlier in the episode they discussed the Thriller 40 documentary, which Charles T had a fair amount of criticism about specifically in terms of narrative structure (or lacktherof). Either way, an interesting update that has me kind of excited.

They also asked Taj what his thoughts are on fans who are in doubt about his plans to complete this or who believe it won't happen. They named some specific prominent fans and quoted some of what they have said about Taj. Taj's response really wasn't all that defensive. He expressed that he genuinely can understand why people feel that way, especially if they donated, but he really hopes that when the docuseries comes out and achieves everything he said it would, that those fans will help promote it. He also said he knows he sounds like a broken record by saying that it is coming, and he realizes how frustrating that might be, but that he is extremely tight-lipped on saying anything about the progress in order to protect the integrity of the project. I can't help but wonder if there are possibly some legal components to this as well, especially if the estate is involved in some way after all (though I have nothing in mind when I say this).

Finally, Taj talked about how constructing the team for this project was very time-consuming with a significant vetting process because it was obviously important to him that everyone on the team supports Michael and believes in his innocence. However, he also stressed the importance of getting the best possible people involved in terms of talent. He said several times that he thinks the quality of the project will far exceed anyone's expectations. As a writer/creator myself, I can honestly say I would never promise that level of quality if I wasn't extremely confident in what I was doing. So I'm inclined to believe him, but who knows.

He opened and closed his update with a mention of how important it is to him that this is released in 2023. My guess at this point is that we are looking at late 2023. I actually think it would be amazing if he timed it for an October/Halloween release. I suppose we will see.

I think that is all! I hope this saves those with interest some time. I do like quite a lot about the MJ Cast, but I also find them a little grating at times. Parts of the episode as a whole annoyed me, but Taj's bits were quite interesting and I appreciated his perspective on things like the Victory Tour, the possible museum and casino in the works, etc. So if it interests you, check it out! It is the Christmas Special and it just came out a few days ago.

They do a podcast like every 8months now...but I'm not sure why he just can't tell us what the holdup is. After so long...ppl tend to give up & forget about certain projects like this. This was supposed to be in defense of l.n & I'm sure the general public doesn't think about l.n at this point either. They both lost & mj estate won....again. I think he should just stop giving interviews about it coming out & just start the promotion when it's finally ready to go. We will promote it as hard-core fans but I'm just tired of "its coming" 5-6years of that same line. Just put it out when it's ready..

😂

Ironically, they just released four episodes in the last 2 weeks. There is a 2-part Matt Forger interview which totals to about 5 hours (I haven't finished these yet, but they are actually amazing...Matt Forger is eloquent and interesting to listen to), a Thriller 40 Roundtable, and then this Christmas episode. But you're right, they are *extremely* inconsistent with their releases. I can't help but wonder how much this impacts their reach.

I think you are totally right about this. Twitter is a disaster and certainly not a measure for how the world at large feels about him, but I feel like the support from the general public has been tremendous these past 6 months or so (basically anytime there is some media garbage). There are still people that talk about LN but it doesn't seem to be making a huge impact anymore 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, I'm sort of at the point of preferring this too. I would be happy if we were given ANY kind of a timeline update. Something like "we expect a 4th quarter of 2023 release" would be enough for me. I'd stop thinking about it and just wait for promo. It's the ambiguity that is tiresome.

Which could be taken in a negative or a positive way so I guess we give him the benefit of the doubt. Again.

However, he followed this up by saying that what is unique about his docuseries is that rather than the narrative being built around interviews with people who knew Michael, he is building the narrative using archival footage instead, with the interviews supplementing and supporting that narrative.
This makes me slightly nervous. I can see how it could work but ... I dunno. There's been no shortage of archive footage of Michael over the years. I'm not a creative so I'll park my judgement and wait and see what he produces.

This is the first time I've heard him actually talk about the narrative structure of the project and, honestly, I kind of love what he said. I would much rather see archival footage of Michael that tells the story of who he was, plus I imagine he has enormous access to footage and I think a narrative structured in such a way could really be beautiful.
It could be. But it needs to be not just beautiful but also able to tell a story that will reach the cynics or those who are undecided. Maybe I need to sit with this idea a little longer and see if I can wrap my head around it.

As Taj explained, he thinks the best way to show people who Michael truly was is to actually show Michael to them. Charles has been pals with Taj for quite a while, it seems. He's a good journalist so his input could be useful. He is often quite critical of Michael. He slags off Invincible something rotten. That said, he has always stood up for Michael's innocence. He has done great work in that regard. He has been consistent in his support of Michael's innocence. I do trust him on this. I've posted this comment before but I'll repeat it here:

There's an episode of MJ Cast where Charles Thomson is interviewed. As with all the special guests on the podcast, at the end he was asked how he thinks Michael should be remembered. He said:

"He should be remembered as a hero. He put up a good fight and he didn't let the b*st*rds get him down. Well, OK, he did let them get him down. They got him on June 25th. But before that he put up a good fight. He put up a f*cking good fight."

I think it's probably a good thing that Charles is involved. He is diligent in correcting inaccurate stories about Michael. The media reportage of WMA 2006, for example.

They also asked Taj what his thoughts are on fans who are in doubt about his plans to complete this or who believe it won't happen. They named some specific prominent fans and quoted some of what they have said about Taj. Taj's response really wasn't all that defensive. I do kinda feel sorry for Taj in a way. He's caught between a rock and a hard place, it seems.

It does so thank you. Apart from the first hour of the Brett Barnes interview I haven't listened to MJ Cast for at least 18 months. I'm out of practice and I'm short on time for marathon listening sessions just now so this is really helpful.

I do like quite a lot about the MJ Cast, but I also find them a little grating at times. Parts of the episode as a whole annoyed me,
That's why I took a break and then it just kept on going, lol.

It'll have to wait until after I've listened to my man, Matt Forger! :ROFLMAO:

This report was great, thanks so much.

Yeah it's like...u don't even think about it & then here he comes talking about "its still not ready but it will be alot of archival footage of him" which makes it even more anticipating yet at the same time....its like bruuuuuuuuuuuhhhhh. We don't even care about the doc no more. We know factually he was innocent af!! . Just give us the unreleased footage at this point!

Which could be taken in a negative or a positive way so I guess we give him the benefit of the doubt. Again.
That was my first thought lol.

This makes me slightly nervous. I can see how it could work but ... I dunno. There's been no shortage of archive footage of Michael over the years. I'm not a creative so I'll park my judgement and wait and see what he produces.
I understand, but for me I am SO much more excited about this idea than a more traditionally structured project. In my brain, this could be absolutely brilliant. However, I am also going to hold all judgment until I see it. But I'm going in more positively than I was before this.

That said, no amount of archival footage is enough for me lol.

It could be. But it needs to be not just beautiful but also able to tell a story that will reach the cynics or those who are undecided. Maybe I need to sit with this idea a little longer and see if I can wrap my head around it.
I totally agree with this! I use the word beautiful because of what I want it to be lol. But I absolutely don't think it will JUST be beautiful. I think it will show people a side of Michael - i.e. the more 'normal every day person' side - while also highlighting his exceptionality. But I hope it will do much more than that too.

Charles has been pals with Taj for quite a while, it seems. He's a good journalist so his input could be useful. He is often quite critical of Michael. He slags off Invincible something rotten.
You know I'm not even the biggest fan of Invincible (it's the only album I haven't dedicated significant time to yet, is what I mean) but I had to turn off an Invincible roundtable because it was so over-the-top in negativity in my opinion. But beyond that, I actually really respect Charles from what I've heard on the podcast. He is about as straightforward as it gets, without an ounce of sugarcoating, which is part of what makes his assurance of Michael's innocence, and his respect for his legacy all the more convincing to me. As much as I love the flowery, gushing types (like myself haha) I really appreciate Charles.

That said, he has always stood up for Michael's innocence. He has done great work in that regard. He has been consistent in his support of Michael's innocence. I do trust him on this. I've posted this comment before but I'll repeat it here:

I remember this. And I love and respect it so much.

This was exactly my feeling. I am much more confident in this documentary because of knowing Charles is pretty heavily involved. Not going to lie... there was a part of me before this that was concerned Taj was editing home videos on a iMovie lol. This suggests something professional and, hopefully, narrative driven.

It does so thank you. Apart from the first hour of the Brett Barnes interview I haven't listened to MJ Cast for at least 18 months. I'm out of practice and I'm short on time for marathon listening sessions just now so this is really helpful.
Fair.

That's why I took a break and then it just kept on going, lol.
The absolute fairest of them all lol.

It'll have to wait until after I've listened to my man, Matt Forger! :ROFLMAO:
I think you will enjoy their conversation. As always, I wish I was interviewing these people instead. So many follow up questions, awkward edits -- he will say something fucking amazing and they will just jump to another question. Who knows what the reason for this is. I just cannot stand it.

This report was great, thanks so much.
You're very welcome ❤️

My biggest fear is LN will being rerun on TV or streamed, maye just in time for Michaels death-day or birthday. So this documentary should see the light sooner rather than later.

On a another point I sincerely hope that the judge decides in favor of the Estate against HBO and allows public arbritation. This could be an opportunity to expose all these liars in public. They shell all go bankrupt and only regret ever making this documentary.

They got sued for that. They can't stream or broadcast that bs. It's 1 big lie.

There's no decision that they can't broadcast it. The lawsuit is also aimed only at HBO. This is the only approach to make a case. Michael did a clause in the contract for broadcasting the Bucharest concert and in it they (HB=) committed not to broadcast anything bad about Michael
LN has continued to air around the world on multiple channel and streaming-platforms worldwide since the Estate made the lawsuit.

& u honestly think ppl watch it?

Genuinely, what’s the status of this doc? It’s been in the works since 2019, and I’ve heard nothing yet of it.
