I always figured they went with the final vocal comp MJ approved (assuming they made one). LA Reid also said that after the first couple takes they all started to sound the same. I would love to get the full sessions cough cough @Korgnex to hear any different ad-libs he might have done.

I believe it's just exaggerated by Reid. More likely Bruce has fired up a fresh 24 track tape for vox only; MJ did several vocals runs and later comp'ed from those.

It has that distinct sound and distortion

All of the stuff on that channel is either typical Suno/Udio AI slop or crappy mixes made from filtered stems or leaked multitracks.

It's very likely that's true, since there is a slave tape dated May 23rd, 1991 in existence.

Just lowered the pitch gradually til it matched the note/pitch that the 1988 version (and the 1987 one) has

This is the 1990 version, the one Korg leaked has a couple elements moved as well as the B25 version's chorus
