The Lady In My Life is one of the best songs on Thriller. Do you agree?

Ok, if it makes you feel better to have somebody agree with you, go for it.

It is just the incredible power he sings the song live especially during Dangerous Tour which i thought was far superior to BAD tour and the meek vocals on the studio version.
Not every song has to be shouted though. The album version is great because it is subdued.

I think The Lady in My Life is a great way to end the album, regardless of what Rocking Bone magazine says.

No. It's the weakest out of the 9 for me. It's also worth considering that it wasn't released as a single and the only other track off Thriller with that distinction was Baby be mine....which was used as a B-Side on other single releases. LIML never was.

The only reason why "Baby Be Mine" and "Lady in My Life" get skipped over is because they're the only songs on the album that weren't singles. Most people have enough taste to realize that "The Girl is Mine" is the very worst song on the album.

Once you look past the hype of the singles/videos and judge the tracks in strictly terms of quality, I'd say "Lady in My Life" is pretty good. One of MJ's best R&B songs, IMHO; he sounds pretty mature on it, like you get the vibe MJ grew up and found true love even though that was never the case in real life.

Also, who cares about Rolling Stone? Same trash magazine that gave a cover story to one of the Boston bombers (whose names I don't even remember).

No I do not agree.

It says a lot about the quality on Thriller that you can say LIML is the least favorite song on the album.
As a stand alone song LIML is absolutely stunning and beautiful - but the rest of the Thriller songs are just even better IMO.

The Girl Is Mine is basically what today is called "Yacht Rock". Yacht Rock is enjoyed by a lot of people and there was even a recent documentary about it. Although some of the artists do not like that term, especially Donald Fagen from Steely Dan.. At the time it was called "light rock" & "Westcoast". It was very popular in the US during the late 1970s & early 1980s. Both Mike & Janet have based songs on ones by the 1970s band America. Jimmy Jam also said he was a big fan of America and he's one of Janet's producers.

Cool hearing this version, but it rightfully didn't belong on the album. The song just drags out too long.
Tbh, I would have given the same treatment (cutting 2nd verse and following chorus) to WBSS, too. That way there'd be some extra space to save the outro of BJ.

OC the album would have required a new sequencing.

Just because a particular musical genre is enjoyed by a lot of people, this does not necessarily mean that all songs from that musical genre are enjoyed by a lot of people.

For example: 'The Girl Is Mine' and 'Human Nature' (from the 'Thriller' album) are both Yacht Rock, yet a lot of people regard the former as a very bad song and the latter as a very good song.

Yet The Girl Is Mine reached #2 on the Hot 100 (#1 R&B) and Human Nature made it to #7 (#27 R&B). One song has a Beatle on it and the other does not. Paul still got a lot of radio airplay in the US at the time. Paul even got R&B radio airplay with some songs like the live version of Coming Up, Arrow Through Me, Goodnight Tonight, & Silly Love Songs. Also the duets Paul did with Stevie Wonder. A lot of the "Yacht Rock" songs were played on R&B radio too.

I don't know who thinks TGIM is a bad song. It's just childish compared to Human Nature, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's a silly song, we need those sometimes.

Just because a song charts high doesn't mean it's held in high regard lol. "We Built This City" by Starship was also a chart topper and yet it's widely considered to be one of the worst songs ever. "The Girl is Mine" had a lot of buzz when it first came out, but it wasn't long before it came to be considered one of the weaker songs on the album. Even MJ himself said he wasn't satisfied with how the song turned out. Most people today would agree that "Human Nature" is much better.

I have always enjoyed TGIM.

Nice melody. Youthfool, fun, carefree. Maybe it's not big art, but it is a nice tune.

By who? Rolling Stone magazine? Funny, still I hear We Built This City all the time on oldies radio and there's a recent commercial that uses it. A lot of people don't like Drake & Taylor Swift but they have more entries on the Hot 100 that anyone else. Taylor also has the highest grossing tour ever. So there's still people who like them. Rolling Stone also does not like Mr. Roboto by Styx (even some of the band members don't like it) and I still hear it too.

Agree. TGIM is all about the charming melody. It's a nice song and really the calm before the storm on the album.

I would be really interested in how you guys judge if a song is excellent or not. For me, there are several factors - first of all, the song has to grab me and pull me into another dimension, out of this world (dramatic picture, imagine šŸ˜‚). That is something very subjective, how can you judge that from the outside?

Second of all, the artist needs to put his soul in there, you have to hear it. Also a little subjective, but you can hear that even if you do not like a song, I think.

Then there is the technical aspect, how complex a song is, all the harmonies, multitracks (I learned that word here in the forum, finally the time to use it 🤔). That is more judgeable, but also not really necessary. A lot of simple/acoustic songs are just unbelievably great.

There are songs on Thriller I really love and think are genius, even if they are not as complex, technically regarded. And others that appearently are considered to be extraordinary, which I like and understand the common opinion about, but rarely listen to because they don't really grab me and pull,... you know the story šŸ™ƒ

So...how to judge?

one of my favorite slow !!,popular song on Spotify with more than 70M streams

I love this song so much!
I put it on repeat over and over again.šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

It is a nice song , just feels quite out of place and a pretty boring song . Though great ad libs at the end. He seemed to prefer to perform She's Out Of my life which on the album again i find quite boring but incredible live . So it would have been interesting to hear how lady in my life sounded live. Ballad wise i think I just can't Stop loving you is by a country mile his best ever.
This is OT but I like ā€œShe’s Out Of My Lifeā€. It could have easily been in a Disney movie - it has that Disneyesque sound. And yes, it’s incredible performed live. Michael really extended how far that song can go in performances.

That's the point. You can on one hand rate the technical aspects - meaning the composition, lyrics, whatever - you can rate if it fits a certain style but the most important point is how does it make you feel, where does it take you. If it touches you, it's a fantastic song. Maybe not for everyone, but for you.
^ This. It’s the equivalent of saying that the idea of a good movie is to be entertaining - then from there, viewers can determine how it makes them feel, what it means to them, etc.
