Sony suggested a music video for "Butterflies" to MJ, but he didn't respond to their proposal, probably because it would have been low budget: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2002-jul-09-fi-jackson9-story.html

I remember reading on Wikipedia years ago that Sony wanted the video to be animated. I also recall seeing a YouTube video that was claimed to be a snippet of Sony's pitch to MJ. It was a seconds-long animation of a butterfly set to the song playing. It looked very much like early 2000s Flash. Some people here spoke about it: https://www.mjjcommunity.com/threads/butterflies-promo-animation.99329/

If that was what they proposed to MJ, I can see why he didn't respond to it lol. Anyone still got it?

The official animated music video for 'Butterflies' was purely meant to hype up anticipation for the upcoming, actual music video of that song.

Just like the concept of the official lyric videos, which are released before the actual music videos.

I don't think that was the one I saw on YouTube. I just recall it being an animation of a butterfly. Maybe it was fanmade, but I seem to recall it being claimed to be authentic.
