Thriller 40th Anniversary

for the ones who had already seen it (I'll be watching it on MTV at 10 PM tonight,I guess),how many minutes of pure concert footage is there?
which songs were showed and how long did those snippets last,nonetheless?
 
Just finished watching it and here’s my review:

I would give it 3,5/5 stars myself. The unseen footage is wonderful, as was to be expected. I thoroughly enjoyed the Victory Tour footage, the behind the scenes of the Beat It short and the Thriller short, as well as the The Girl Is Mine studio footage. The quality of the studio footage was not great, but it was very nice and unique to see it.

I did not have a problem with the structure of the documentary. I didn’t have the feeling that it was going in the track-by-track direction at the start, and that it got confusing after, as Damien Shields has opined. It mostly goes in chronological order throughout. Only at the end it gets confusing because they mention the Grammy’s before the Victory Tour, and then after the Victory Tour again.

Many of the people in the documentary had a reason to be there, and it made sense to see them, the others I did not really mind seeing, even though their opinions were somewhat irrelevant.
My biggest problem is the fact that they mixed footage which is in pristine quality with YouTube footage, some with the logo of the YouTube channel on it. This I will never understand. When you have the resources and the footage available to you, how can you be so lazy and use footage found online which is in poor quality? Unbelievable.

I also felt like they could have gone way more in depth, if they really wanted to. There are enough stories which were not mentioned and for me personally, there was no new information which blew me away. Regardless, it is great to have a positive documentary coming out on Michael, which puts the focus where it belongs: on the art.
All in all, this is somewhat better than the Off The Wall documentary, but still not as good as Bad 25, in my eyes.
 
I'm seeing him do that tap dance move he does in Smooth Criminal and a lot of the BOW video on the Victory Tour, can't believe it.

Makes me realise how much we still haven't seen, I would have guessed he hadn't done that move till 87 in the SC video.

It's kinda hard to be anxious with the mj estate. They don't ever give us nothing so when they do...I appreciate it. Even tho I haven't got home to watch it...its alot of negative reviews here. So... I'll see. Still can't wait tho.

Sonic Fantasy is the right documentary for you if you want to see the building process.
In my opinion watch those two documentaries back to back. It's a great experience!

This one is a tad bit compressed. There's another one, in 1080p, with better quality in some torrent websites.
Also, I've seen on Twitter there's a 4K version out as well.
 
Well that was as dogshit as I expected and then some! So glad the majority of the documentary focused solely on Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean and practically ignored every other track! At least Bad 25 touched on every song if not just for a few seconds. However the BIGGEST selling album of all time gets reduced to 1hr 30 mins of useless information with brilliant and relevant experts chiming in about TikTok, BTS/KPop, Michael’s influence and random no names explaining Michael’s music through their own horrendous beatboxing and terrible impressions of his dance moves.

Welp, at least we got a solid 2 mins of cool footage even though if you’ve seen the trailer from last month.. you’ve pretty much seen all there is. I loved the recording footage of Paul and Michael at the sound board working out harmonies for a split second that was pretty cool.. good job estate! You made a documentary aimed at the people who have never heard of Michael Jackson before!

Just watched it. It’s as you’d expect. Not as many random talking heads as I thought. To reiterate what someone said above, it doesnt’ really dig into the making or creative process of the album which I was hoping it would, more so shows the effect the album had on the world. The Victory Tour footage and The Girl Is Mine footage are the highlights.

Also Colin Hanks, Tom Hanks son is a producer on it? What’s that about?

I really hope they do make the 4K version available online, Netflix would be nice. The Estate should make a deal with Netflix so Netflix can have the live concerts - Wembley and Bucharest (and hopefully more), the BAD25 doc and From Motown to Your Town (OTW doc) and Thriller and Ghosts in 4K, and Moonwalker - and also the music videos in longs versions. - and the making of docs. That would be great.

I wonder if that’s a good thing. Sonic Fantasy did what it did so well, I don’t think the estate would be able to do the creative side of it justice so they can focus on “omg best selling album ever” and we get the best of both.
 
The victory tour footage🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾I felt like I was there. But just as you get into it...it cuts. Like DAMN IT JUST GIVE US THE TOUR IN FULL! It was definitely the highlight & if I'm not mistaken...thriller quality seemed even higher as I saw it in theaters 2017. It's definitely different from the youtube version. Motown 25 has never been in that high of quality...EVER! Smh kinda pissed they didnt even mention p.y.t or lady in my life. They spent ENTIRELY too much fckn time on tiktok & bts. I was like man come on with this bs. I wish it was in chronological order because it jumps & jumps from grammys to victory back to tgim & etc. I just can't fathom the thought that 1st of all...they have soooooo much footage. I could've just watched more of Michael bts in the studio & more making of thriller. It was so much left out that I've never seen like at the end when John mentions to Michael about 40 years from now...I would love to see more of that. I can go on & on but my biggest pray is that we get that victory tour in full. & I hate the way billie jean ended. It was very very poorly edited I declare!!! I hate when they go from 4k to 144p to 360p to 4k. Like...if you have victory in 4k...use ALL of it...why go from film footage right back to that old billie jean video from mtv & even that was poorly ripped. But overall...I'd say 7/10

This was my first thought mate. First time I've saw Mike do that step pre 87

As for the doc, it was disappointing they hardly mentioned certain songs but the new footage and audio was great.

If you haven't seen it yet, it's more about the impact of Thriller and less about the making of it, but its better than the Off The Wall one in my opinion

Not saying that i don't agree but why do you feel it's better than off the wall?
 
So why didn't the estate include a full Victory tour concert? They did include a full concert on Bad 25 but never since, is it only because of the brothers? Ah well maybe for Thriller 50?

yes, they are saving it for Thriller 50. They woulda released it now, but since some of yall support shitty releases such as Thriller 40 or they ugly ahh t shirts from their website, they just wouldn't put any effort now.
 
I bet you $10,000 they are saving the Victory Tour in HQ for the 50th Anniversary. Or maybe after the BioPic when interest is at its peak.
