It´s really a bad world for cats.
Maybe the adoptable cats in the video got homes.

No Kill Conference

August 11-12, 2012 in Washington, D.C.

The No Kill Advocacy Center is teaming up with the Animal Law program at George Washington University Law School and No Kill Nation to bring together the nation’s most successful shelter directors and the nation’s top animal lawyers. They will help you create a No Kill community and teach you how to use the legal system to save the lives of animals.

Learn from animal control/shelter directors who are now saving over 90% of all animals using the building blocks to No Kill success – programs and services that have had results in both urban and rural communities – to increase adoptions, reduce length of stay, increase redemption rates, rehabilitate animals, and much, much more.

Learn from animal law experts who have challenged our legal system to help animals: Whether it’s drafting model laws, fighting breed specific legislation, eliminating the gas chamber, filing impact legislation, or protecting condemned dogs, learn how to use the legal system to save the lives of animals.

Learn from activists fighting entrenched and regressive shelters in their own community as they show you how to launch successful campaigns for reform.

The only national conference that says we can end the killing and we can do it today.

Authorities in Sweden still thinks the solution for homeless cats is to kill them. It´s just like she describes with the man with too many cats-it doesn´t work .

SPAY IT FORWARD PROGRAM

WHAT IS “SPAY IT FORWARD”?

In the movie “Pay It Forward”, the young hero believes he can change the world by helping 3 people who really need it. The catch? They have to pay him back by helping 3 other strangers. Even though it seems he fails at first, his acts of kindness start a domino effect of selflessness, awareness to the needs of others and that special sense of accomplishment that comes when you give without expectation of return.

We’ve begun something new at Heaven Can Wait with the hope of inspiring others to step outside their comfort zone and offer help to a stranger. It started with 3 local families, none of whom I knew personally, but all needing to have their family pet altered. I offered to pay half their surgery if they could come up with the other half themselves. In return, I asked for their commitment to help out a friend, neighbor or even stranger to have their pet altered within the next year, or whenever they had a little bit of extra money.

The first comment I received was “How can I help someone I don’t know?” My answer was “I don’t know you, but you asked for help and I gave it. Could you not do the same for someone else?”

I started Heaven Can Wait because I wanted to help the community and the animals within it. I wanted to change the world, or at least my corner of it! I know we only have the resources to reach a fraction of the animals who need help, and this includes animals with owners who just don’t have the extra money to take care of spay/neutering their pet.

Cat overpopulation is a community issue, and I suppose I still believe in the kindness of man to each other and to our companion animals. Please help make a difference by your actions, by helping, and by reaching out to someone who needs it.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Spay It Forward is an idea meant to make ourselves more aware of what is going on around us. This simple concept seems to me to be actually quite profound. In today’s world of overachievement, ambition and selfishness, I believe we have become too busy for sharing our compassion and empathy, certainly towards animals but also towards each other.

Do you have a neighbor who you know has let their female have litter after litter? Maybe someone you’ve heard about who really cares for their cat but has no money right now to spay her? A familiar neighborhood stray who could really use someone to care about him? Start by talking. It’s that simple. “I see your cat has had another litter of kittens. I’d like to help you get her spayed.” Urge them to contact one of our local clinics to set up an appointment. Then send your part of the payment to the clinic on behalf of that person and their pet, or drop in, say hello to the staff and deliver your part of the cost in person. Half the cost is approximately $60 - $100 depending on the clinic.

Spay It Forward can work if the recipients of kindness also help someone down the road, and even if some cannot or for some reason, choose not, I believe there are more who will, and a small step towards controlling overpopulation has taken place.

For every cat spayed, literally thousands of births are prevented over the lifetime of the animal and their subsequent offspring. Thousands. Because cats reproduce at exponential rates, even spaying one cat makes a huge difference. Less cats become a shelter statistic, less cats suffer through a short lifetime filled with hunger, searching for shelter, endless reproduction and premature deaths. And ultimately, less unwanted cats struggling to find decent homes.

It´s so easy to think someone else can help this kitten, but remember it starts with us....
I wouldn´t advise someone to take an injured kitten and travel by bus with it,but sometimes it can be the best you can do

Some abandoned kittens

Why can´t people spay their cats instead of letting their cats have litter after litter and then abandon the kittens. Many kittens are never found and they starve to death.f

Re: to catlovers

Really can't stand people who abandon kittens like that! They could at least drop them into a local pet store or even a shelter! Idiots! Me and my fiancee want to get a kitten once we move in together if the landlord allows it. I was also gonna take her to Battersea Dogs & Cats home to have a look around :)

It´s good that the cats are up for adoption and they are spayed/neutered

Our Mission: IndyFeral seeks to reduce the stray and feral cat overpopulation through the non-lethal method of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), not trap and kill.

IndyFeral was established as a means of changing the way stray and feral cats have been traditionally viewed and dealt with in our community. We live in a culture where, for some, the value of an animal's life has no strong meaning of its own - only a contingent one based on his or her use to people. Some people consider stray/feral cats as pests, dangerous or a nuisance and as a result, think it is acceptable to harm them, ignore them by "letting nature take its course" or kill them. Some believe that feral cats lead short, miserable lives and should be killed for their own good to protect them from any future hardship they may suffer. IndyFeral holds these views as cruel, inhumane and unacceptable. TNR is not an endorsement for abandoning cats.

In keeping with our mission, IndyFeral believes that all living creatures including feral and stray cats have an intrinsic value. They deserve compassion, care and protection for their entire lives. All living creatures have a basic instinct to live and have the best life they can. Acting as their advocate or "voice," IndyFeral will strive to improve their lives and promote ideals that are more reflective of a caring and humane community.

By humanely trapping stray & feral cats in your neighborhood, you are taking a step towards ending the homeless cat overpopulation in Indianapolis as well as improving their lives. Congratulations for taking responsibility, acting humanely, and taking a positive action instead of doing nothing at all. Thank you.

The IndyFeral Board
