Surprised it was never considered for any of the Jacksons albums. Perhaps written around the same time as Blues Away?

Maybe it is the same song but title/lyrics changed? Or maybe it was misread or something. I'm curious about this now.

Yes, same song.
Just watched the deposition from 1993 and he hums that same tune when asked about "What a Lonely Way to Go". MJ says he wrote it before Off The Wall.

I find it rather unlikely they've named the track wrong, maybe it had lyrics changed at some point?

Lovely vs Lonely would be completely different lyrics! One sounds sad and other happy. Have any lyrics leaked?
I hope it's lovely though which sounds like a nice hopeful song.

It's entirely possible they got the title wrong at the deposition I guess

Maybe "Lovely Way" will be released this time? It was meant for Michael 2010 after Mark Robson mixed it. I haven't seen any concrete evidence of when it's from. Some say from Triumph sessions,, some say Thriller sessions.

They're not really sticking to things needing to have been considered for Thriller it seems.

I don’t think the actual recording era makes a difference, so long as it was at one point considered for Thriller (which for all we know it was, even if briefly). If we’re sticking strictly to recording dates, “Don’t Be Messin’ ‘Round” shouldn’t be on Bad 25 because it was originally recorded for Thriller.
