What was Michael’s actual health and mindset before he passed away?

There has been many discussion over the last 16 years regarding MJ’s health and motivations for doing This Is It. I have heard many contradictory things and I want someone to just tell me what the truth of the situation was.

In regards to This Is It, we do know that the original main motivation for it was to pay off MJ’s debt without him completely selling of Neverland or the ATV song catalogue. But some fans and some people close to MJ make it out like he only did it for money and just did not want to be there. But then others say that Michael was very excited for This Is It and wanted to prove to the world he still got it, while also giving his kids the chance to see him live.

Same is said for his health. The same people say similar things regarding his health, with some saying he was in very poor health and low energy, which checks out given how he died. But other people say that he was doing great and that he was just holding back during the This Is It rehearsals like he usually does before a big concert series. And his autopsy says he was relatively healthy for a 50 year old man.

So what was actually going on?

Michael Jackson's slurred speech (which was recorded on May 10th, 2009) and it was played during the Dr. Conrad Murray 2011 trial clearly shows the singer's failing physical/mental health at that time.

Also, reliable sources close to Michael Jackson (such as, Leonard Rowe) stated that Michael Jackson was manipulated by AEG Live.

AEG Live was also feeding him drugs and various substances in order for him not only to rehearse but also to perform later on stage.

Michael’s image after 05 was not good . He needed to show the world exactly what made him famous.

It had been so long since he last performed for a sustained period of time. He was known more for his controversies and eccentricity rather than his legendary musical talent.

We now know he was millions upon millions in debt so money, improve his image and doing it for his kids and fans will be what motivated him.

The reality was that MJ was a real troubled and mentally ill person (in my opinion) by the 2000s. What he really needed was a complete reset , a spell in rehab and try to get rid of the demons.

He was sedated when that was recorded.

The autopsy showed that he was in normal health for a 50-year-old man. Only real problem were his "inflamed lungs", but that wasn't any factor in his death, which was a propofol overdose.

Another factor to his death was also benzodiazepine intoxication.

Michael Jackson's real health problems at that time also included:

- Arthritis

- Dehydration

- Chronic back pain

- Insomnia (he was unable to sleep properly for the last 60 days)

- Loss of appetite (he was described as shockingly thin at the time of his death)

- Dependency on some very strong drugs (such as, Lorazepam, Lidocaine, Diazepam, OxyContin)

There were also his panic attacks, his mental disorientations, his abnormal behaviour of repeating himself, and so on.

He was not fine. I can't sugarcoat it. He was drunk or high during the TII press conference, he was either drunk or high or sedated in almost every public appearance in the 00s. He was extremely thin for TII. And that whole situation breaks my heart so bad.

And going by what was said during the AEG trial, I don't even want to go there! But he was not fine. Mentally, emotionally and physically.

About him not wanting to tour, we know he hated touring. I don't think doing TII was on the top of his list. But considering he was in that situation, he wanted to put on the greatest show on earth for his fans. It's layered but it's easy to understand, it's not black or white.

Agreed.

I don't get how some fans can openly say Michael was in great condition to tour. He was better off living his life unbothered and could've made money doing something else.

I guess everyone saw what they wanted to see and believe what they wanted to believe. But noone seemed to have asked and REALLY cared about Michael the human being.

I have never watched THIS IS IT because it is too painful. When I see images of him during 2009, he looked emaciated to me and it seems like his light was gone.

Didn't the inflamed lungs go way back, too? I remember even reading about that in Moonwalk.
He was diagnosed with Pleurisy during the 'The Wiz' era (inflammation of the lining of his lungs).

But Michael Jackson suffered for many years also from Costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage which connects a rib to the sternum).

Costochondritis, for example, was the cause that while he was rehearsing in the studio in 1990 (June), he felt excruciating chest pains and he had to be rushed to the hospital immediately.

Because some Michael Jackson fans want to retain a positive image of their idol.

Oh yes, I remember how he talked about his in his "MOONWALK"

Aww

I don't know what was going on, I think only people very close to him could tell you that. But I gotta say I can't look at videos or pictures from TII because he was so thin there, it always breaks my heart...
Yes, We saw him in London march 2009, he looked good then, but when you see This is it videos, you can see how different he looks, something has happened since then.

This is my first post but I've been an MJ fan since the 80s. I know how passionate his fans are so I'm not here to upset anyone but a lot of this discussion falls in line with something I've been thinking about lately and I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts/opinions. I personally know about mental health struggles and I've lost a couple of wonderful, good, amazing people to the disease of addiction so none of this is a judgement against Michael Jackson. If anything, it shows he was human, something I believe he struggled so hard to be seen as.

I agree that from 2000 on he seemed to be (for the most part) out of it. My personal belief is that even if This Is It never happened, his passing was still a matter of time; he wasn't going to make it to old age.

Given that by 2000 the 1st set of allegations were several years in the past and the 2nd set were several years in the future, any thoughts on what happened during this time frame that began this downward spiral? The Munich Bridge accident? A natural progression of fame/substance abuse? He was a new father, he was working on a new album - seems like things should have been going better for him at this time.

Anyone have any thoughts?

They wouldn't have done ts if he was still here. Trust me! & for one... it wouldn't be any cirque shows for him to want to choreograph either

He was fighting a bunch of demons all his life and I believe he suffered more the older he got. He was abused as a child by both! of his parents. His siblings only wanted his money, he couldn't find the love of his life, he hated his appearance and he probably knew plastic surgery made it worse and worse. The world talked badly about him, he didn't have real friends, success was fading as was his health. He probably had extreme constant fears of losing everything (including his dancing and singing skills and his children). And he was an addict. Of course it went downhill pretty fast.

wtf, chill ...of course a lot of bad things happened to him and that influences your self esteem but don't state things you assume as the truth. Can we please stop to act like if we know exactly how other people feel? In general, not just concerning Michael...that is so rude.

post , It’s very much evident that MJ was mentally unwell in his later years and I believe

I don’t understand what’s wrong with their post? I think it was very much evident that MJ was suffering from extreme mental illness in his later years.

Allegations, mega fame, controversies and declining health and also lack of musical success - it’s no surprise he ended up the way he did if you also include his mental trauma he suffered as a child.

It’s a miracle he even made it to 50.

Because, in my opinion, some points are exaggerated. The post also claims things we cannot know for sure and I think therefore we shouldn't use a wording that makes people think these are actual facts.

The poster said "probably" and "I believe" so I think it's pretty clear they are stating their opinion not fact. However, I'm interested to hear which points you think are exaggerated?
