Is Michael the last of the megastars?

^^Yes, I agree.
I think people do want to be entertained, and "groomed" stars has learned to entertain- but in that education they have become "dull"?

But Michael also was "groomed" in Motown, as a child star.
Sad as it is, his past as a child star means that he developed his talents to the extreme- and because he is a survivor of that fate, he has the education of almost 20 years before he becomes a superstar on his own in the Thriller era.
Many of the great artists started very young, when you see the exeptional work of artists as Michelangelo, Da Vinchi, Mozart etc... they all were trained in their craft from a very young age.

However, whatever else it takes of being talented to the extreme- its the drive and willingness to work as hard as its humanly possible, combined with being authentic, and have an ability to toutch the hearts of so many people.

they may have a proper basis but then they're formed and educated just the way the tv station/music business/a record label wants them to be. And that's something that can not lead to creativity. They can't do their own thing. They don't write songs on their own.

You are so right. Michael was in this too, back before he became an indepandent artist. I think this thing always existed, and, this is true now too. Why everybody, not creative? It's because the record companies want them to do things, Michael suffered from this too, but he had his thing.

Michel left Motown when he was still only 16. He was writng and producing his own music from a very early age. Listen to the jacksons albums and you forget that MJ was merely a young teen when he was delivering those beautiful tunes.

maddonna mj and prince are the last superstars. the indusrty is all about using ppl for a couple of years and bleeding them dry and making as much money as possible b4 moving onto the next big thing.and theres no real, new talent out there anymore. you dont have to have any talent these days and those that are out there just copy mj etc so its nothing new.i doubt there will ever be big global stars ever again
Sorry but Michael is not even in the same class with Madonna and Prince. Michael has surpass them. (sorry but many people look at Madonna as more as business/market than talent. Even Madonna said last week she would have never made it on AI). Michael is the last of the TRUE MEGASTAR who have talent. Michael is in the class with Elvis, The Beatles, and Frank S (even Frank said, Michael is the only man who is more talented than me).

Michael is not only a megastar that will be printed in the historybooks, but he's an icon - a person who helped created new things in music culture.
There will not be anyone reaching his level! :D

Madonna was a "megastar" and she has no talent...so talent has nothing to do with this.

Honestly, it's the people WITH the talent that are usually under the radar and never make mainstream success. It's everyone else that hits it big.

But I see that your definition of a "megastar", is someone who has actual talent to justify it...

Well someone in this thread said that there are not really any talented people out there today, which is a CROCK. First of all, as stated, most of them are under the radar.

Secondly, there ARE few that are popular that have some originality and actual talent (to name a few new ones that I favor; Regina Spektor, Mika, MIA, Lupe Fiasco, and a handful of others)...but you have to understand where the "mania" part comes from.

It comes from so many different things and different combinations of sex appeal, talent, image, hype, promotion, all mixed up in different ways for every individual artist.

Madonna, Prince, and Michael all had the "sex appeal" which made people either want to be them, or be with them. I mean let's be honest here, that's one of the main things that makes people go crazy and turn someone into a "mega pop star". That is a HUGE part of it.

But Michael and Prince are definitely more special, as they also have the TALENT to match.

And the fact that we basically watched Michael, a child prodigy, grow up with his brothers and we've been listening to his music from since he was a little kid, watching him in skits/television shows, etc., makes him even MORE special in that sense--like we all either grew up on him, or with him.

the answer is yes his name is Michael jackson (same name i know) he will debut in 2020 and shock the world.

NO and hell no there is only ONE Michael Jackson and at the rate the music industry is going, we will never see anyone else like him in this lifetime.

I remember when Ricky Martin was 'the biggest thing, the next Michael Jackson', and at the time, he was HUGE, and there was the potential for him to become a world wide megastar. It didn't happen, and I remember thinking a lot about it back then and about why it didnt' happen.

I think of our generation, Michael Jackson, Madonna, and in the western world, Prince also, are the last generation of megastars. And earily, they were all born in the same year.

I think other than talent, personality, training, inspirations, life stories, and a whole lot more - timing is the biggest thing. Things like Megastars happen when they are meant to.

The music and entertainment industry is SO INCREDIBLEY different to what it once was. It's now more global, and more fractured. There is so many different 'charts' and genre's of music, it would almost be impossible for someone to reign over a whole cross section of charts and genre's for the length of time someone in Michael's position has.

I think people will look back in envy at our time of megastars. We are very lucky to be witnessing what we do.

I want to see what type of reaction there is to new material when Michael launches to compare it with Madonna and even Prince before I say anything. During the 80's and a good portion of the 90's Michael Jackson was just part of everyones life... He was a brand of the world like Coca-Cola and Disney, and everyone loved him.

These days, although i'm confident he'll release a great album, i'm curious to see whether or not the world will go completely mental over MJ's new music... and I hope it does.

Someone making very good music in the past few years and now who i'd consider music royalty would be Mariah Carey. Her fans are in la-la land at the moment because she's seemingly gone back to her 90's quality and is enjoying charting success. She's doing very well for someone who got torn to shreds in the early 2000's (yes, I know not as bad as Mike, so you dont have to come out and remind me, lol).

Madonna as usual is classified a megastar. Whether or not she's musically talented is not even relevant, it's the simple fact that people mention her next to the likes of MJ and Prince shows she's had an impact. She comes out every few years with a new hairstyle and make up routine and releases a new album and then goes back into making/starring in bad movies or writing books.

^^ Even if Michael did not sell ONE copy of his new album, it would not make him ANY LESS of a mega star.. He's all ready impacted the world in a HUGE/HUGE/HUGE way. More than most people understand..

The impact has been done all ready.. Nothing MJ does after could make him a LESS of a mega star.. There is no where but UP for Michael at this point..

U know there was a time that Elvis could walk the street without people recognizing him..

Does that moment in his life make him less of an icon?? NO!!!

Why would what MJ does now make him less?? it wouldn't.. Nothing MJ does can erase the impact he's made..

He's not a come and go star.. He was not the 'next' anyone.. he is JUST MICHAEL JACKSON, the largest entertainer to EVER hit the planet.

he'll be that FOREVER.. his leagacy will always live on..

Ooooooooooh I remember Ricky! He was sizzling HOT! :D

Yeah he definitely had that initial sex appeal that makes people go crazy when a pop star comes out--I mean he was kind of a "megastar" in his own right--but I guess if "longevity" is a requirement for being a "megastar" then he never qualified as one.

I think I agree with most people here that Michael, Madonna and Prince and the last true megastars (although I think Michael is in another league of his own though). I think its unlikely that we will have any megastars any time soon because its so hard to reinvent the wheel these days as pretty much nearly all the groundwork, foundations and various interpretations upon musical styles have been done. The music industry is kind of stuck in a rut in the sense that although there are plenty of talented artists out there we are in an age where image and the need to look flawless takes precedent over artistic merit. It also seems that sex is heavily being used as a currency and even some big and talented artists have bought into that kind of culture. Also there are some 'artists' who are classed as being highly creative in today's standards when all they are really doing is taking what has already been done plenty of times before and then disguising it as something that they were the genesis of.

I think there may be someone far into the future that will generate a spark and reignite the creativity wheel but I doubt we will see anyone that will be doing that and be embraced and a truly global level anytime soon, maybe in decades perhaps.

Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson are the only stardooms left in the US, one of them is still alive the rest is all wanabees or soap operas

The climate of the music industry and celebrity-dom these days guarantees that the 'mega-star' period is over!

Music wise, everybody is downloading their music hence affecting the industry and artist greatly....just imagine, Thriller would'nt have achieved the heights in sales it did if downloading was available back then. And then you have these 'hurry-come-up' celebrities who are now famous for absolutely nothing at all and its being accepted, whatever happened to true talent?

Michael embodies a complete package, music, showmanship, heart, talents beyond belief.....do any of you see those traits anymore in today's 'stars'???

No for 600 alex. lol The talent is not there and the market is so saturated. Everybody and their mama is releasing music and so so music. There is no substance anymore.

Michael was the last and imo the greatest far as mania.

hey...what about Rolling stones? they still have huge conserts. and u2? (i dont like them) but still...they are huge.

First Last and Only
Michael Jackson is in a classification all his own

It is rather simple, Michael is in a class all his own. Who would you equate with him? Think of the hieghts he rose to. Hell, think of the lows they have tried to push him down to. Look where he is today. Dude has a 25 year old CD selling millions all over again and placing atop the current charts.

there are superstars, teen idols, rock stars, name any adjective you want but after them all comes, MICHAEL JACKSON

hmmm... if you say so;) but what is a megastar?
im not sure if its how many CDs you sell. it is up to every one to deside who is your megastar.

OK then, Michael aint my megastar LoL He is my 'Michael Jackson' and I recognize his star status above all others. I may be alone in my opinion, that is cool. However, I am Correct in my opinion ;)

I think it is up to every iduvidual to deside. personly, besides MJ, morrissey is an artist I really look up to. but I guess MJ has sold more mystery drinks than he has sold CD...hehe
but I really get alot from listening to him...so he is one of my megastars:)

but not more than mj;)

I think the last true "mania" the world saw was the Spice Girls mania of the late 90's...

Hahaha! Can't forget about the Spice Girls! Yes that was definitely true mania!

They were everyone's guilty pleasure! (Unless you were under the age of 16--then you wouldn't have to feel guilty or embarassed about liking them lol).

But let's also not forget--Britney had some HUGE mania-power in her early days as well.

Yeah thats true... Britney got pretty damn huge when she started. They both (SG and Britney) were pretty huge when they first hit, but died off very quickly in comparison to MJ, but that doesn't mean they should be overlooked.

Hey, I was around 10 or 11 when the Spice Girls took the world by storm... and I even liked some of their stuff, lol.

^ Britney had a huge start.. her first album sold 22 million.. For a debute artist that's HUGE.. but with each albums it just kept going less and less..

her last album sold 2 million worldwide

I do think that longetivity is a 'megastar' componant.

MJ probably leads the way in that regard compared with Madonna and Prince, and definatley Spice Girls, Britney and then back from other days of pure mania that didn't last, New Kids on the Block, (they were Massive at their peak), Ricky Martin. But Madonna for example is not only a Megastar because of her singing and performing, she has built a hugely successful empire of other products (books, clothing, image etc) that tops anyone else in that regard. Each Megastar has their own way of being. Elvis has his legacy, his music, his style, his (not all great, but numerous) films. Prince has his singing, his brilliance with instruments, his song writing, his dynamic live performances, his creativity outside of the box.

I don't think a new Megastar with everything they all share, and who has longetivity will happen anytime again.

This is the age of the last Megastars. Enjoy it!
