Stevie Wonder~merged~

Re: Stevie Wonder!!!

Very nice videos. Thanks! Stevie is the man. Super smart and talented. I love it!

One question: is there a live album of Stevie officially launched?

Natural Wonder - Released in 1995. It's an amazing 2-disc set.

He also had a live DVD titled "Live At Last" released within the last month or so.

Re: Stevie Wonder!!!

Stevie performed a concert in London at Finsbury Park that was supposed to be used for a live album. Apparently Stevie was not happy with the sound quality for whatever reason and scrapped the project. The result is one of the best bootlegs I've ever heard. This was when Stevie was a bit experimental with his live shows, often "jam-sessioning" his tracks up a bit with his band Wonderlove.

This track, "To Know You Is To Love You" was written and recorded for Syreeta Wright on one of her two Stevie-produced albums. He plays it slowed down and bluesed-up here, a bit more like the B.B. King version. Michael Sembello is on guitar and Ollie Brown on drums.

Re: Stevie Wonder!!!

Stevie Wonder & The Broadway Cast of "Rent". Killer vocals and harmonica... killer notes... killer version in general.

Never In Your Sun - This track has grown on me over the last year or so. Absolutely love the rhythm and vocals now, as well as the "Housequake"-like opening.

Yeah, I think I just died and went to heaven. Two of my favorites of all time in one night (Stevie Wonder and John Legend), with MJ the following month.

Does anyone know a stevie wonder forum like this one?

Re: Stevie Wonder

All I do is one of my favourite songs ever, I've had it on repeat for most of the day. Driving home from the hospital with the dark night setting in and the city lights flying by, it felt good, lol!

Michael is on backing vocals! With Walter Williams from the O'Jays (i think)
Walter is on there as well as Eddie Levert & Betty Wright. Marlon produced an album for Betty in the early 80s. Stevie is probably one of the only people who can get big names to do background vocals, lol.

Re: Stevie Wonder

Some more backup artists:

Jackson 5 on "You Haven't Done Nothin' "
Minnie Riperton on "Creepin' "
Anita Baker on "Sensuous Whisper"
Paul McCartney played guitar on "A Time To Love" from the album of the same name.
Prince played guitar on "So What The Fuss"
En Vogue did backing vocals on "So What The Fuss"

I'm sure there's tons more.

Re: Stevie Wonder

^^Luther Vandross sings on Part Time Lover - He's the one making the "dum dum da de dum" sounds at the beginning

-Charlie Wilson is also on All I Do

No he's not. But Charlie & Ronnie Wilson do sing backup on "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It". Stevie ad libs and plays harmonica on The Gap Band's "Someday".

Re: Stevie Wonder

Stevie was also on the remix of Gap Band's "Shake A Leg".

Re: Stevie Wonder

Do I do and Overjoyed are my favourites.

Re: Stevie Wonder

I love Stevie Wonder. I love his songs Knocks Me Off My Feet, I Wish, I Just Called To Say I love You, I'd Never Dream You'd Leave In Summer.

Re: Stevie Wonder

Stevie is so positive thinking, I love him!

I recorded 'Live At Last' a few weeks ago, It's awesome.

Does anyone know if he plans on touring again soon?

Re: Stevie Wonder

Oh, man! I love Uncle Stevie so much!! Shoot, if this man could dance (as well as MJ), he could possibly have knocked MJ off the top spot in my heart.

He is indeed a musical genuis, no doubt in my my mind (not in many actually). It's funny that his mother was so worried that her son would have to sell apples and peanuts on the side of the road for a living because at that time there weren't many opportunities for a blind, poor black man. God had a serious surprise for her!

I just got his dvd he filmed at O2 last summer (haven't seen it yet) and of his music, I'm mostly listening to "Hotter Than July" (the album) these days (since it is July, lol), but there are a few that I've been jamming to as well:

"Happier Than the Morning Sun"-beautiful melody, just beautiful and layered background vocals kill me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W6p1_A88to&feature=channel_page

"Love Having You Around"- great song (like most of his)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow6JWVmc0tA&feature=related

"Maybe Your Baby"-funky, funky, funky, I mean fun-KAAAAYYY! love it!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ItPnIG6abg&feature=related

"Girl Blue"- so touching, very personal appeal to me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbnQWQpz5hM&feature=channel_page

"Love's in Need" - great social commentary (he has a lot of political/socially conscious commentary in many of his songs)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z2LNsifEzg&feature=channel_page

or

"Misstra Know it All" - his reflections on Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbnQWQpz5hM&feature=channel_page

or

"Haven't Done nothing"- MJ/Jacksons fans know this one! funky political protest song! Oww!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ji2ma2mfyhU&feature=channel_page

"Don't You Worry Bout a Thing"- this is a great Latin-influenced up tempo jam, but for some reason periodically when I hear it I break out in tears. I don't know if it's some childhood trauma or what. Either way it's a damn good song!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkBUx6Zn6mo&feature=related

There are just too many amazing songs this man has produced! His music is so timeless and simply brilliant! I can't even pick a favorite, although I must admit I'm not the biggest fan of his 80s work (too synth-y for my taste), I respect it and can handle it in moderation.

I only wished that MJ and he could've done more collaborations. I know they so highly respected and admired each other's work (genius recognizes genius) and had the shared Motown history.

If you like any of these, please do yourself and your children a favor and purchase some Stevland Morris. No one will be disappointed!

Re: Stevie Wonder

Also, I'm almost certain I'm not remembering this totally accurately, but I think there's a little anecdote where during the 70s Stevie was producing so many albums and winning so many awards that one year Paul Simon (and Garfunkel I guess) thanked Stevie when they received an award for not producing an album that year.

This man is the real deal!

Re: Stevie Wonder

Yeah, that's true. Paul Simon and Stevie go way back. Paul inducted Stevie into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Stevie sang with Paul on two songs when Paul recieved the first-everGershwin Prize from the Library of Congress in 2007. Stevie was the second recipient.. and Paul sang for Stevie this year when Stevie recieved the prize.

Re: Stevie Wonder

That's funny about him and Paul. I didn't know they had a decades-long "competition" going on, lol (it makes sense, though; both are exceptionally talented singer/songwriters). I saw a brief article with a picture of him and the president a while back about him receiving the award. I just now tried to youtube a performance from the event and found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLvtFd-mfSw. Is this from his instrumental (classical influenced, no?) album "Secret Life of Plants", or something to that effect. I really need to get up on that one because I've never heard it.

Unfortunately, I was relatively late to the game when it comes to his music. For some reason my parents weren't into him that much (we only had "Songs in the Key of Life" as I recall, but I never played it because the album cover creeped me out as a kid. It still does make me a little uncomfortable for some reason, lol). So it was only after listening to an adult cousin's collection in my 20s that I became a fan.

Re: Stevie Wonder

Stevie debuted that song specifically for the event. Artists receiving the Gershwin Prize are asked to submit an original composition, so that's what Stevie submitted. It's hard to say when he started the song, as Stevie is often know for letting songs sit a long time before finishing them. Case in point, here's a song he had back in the 80's, and then the final version which finally appeared on 2005's "A Time To Love":

My Love Is On Fire - Live 1980's version:

My Love Is On Fire - Stevie Wonder

Re: Stevie Wonder!!!

I'm no music head, but to me, so much of Stevie's works Michael could've easily done very well (and vice versa to an extent. Can anyone picture Stevie singing "Bad"? While it might sound pretty good, it's just not a Stevie type of song. I shouldn't speak so soon; someone probably will dig up some obscure live rendition Stevie did of the song and post it, lol)

Their voices just seem so complementary.

Re: Stevie Wonder!!!

Wow, Superstition! I just peeped those jazzy jam sessions you posted above. Stevie probably could easily do full on jazz if he wanted to (or maybe even folk or classical or country, the list seems basically endless).

Gosh, he's phenomenal! I must see this man in concert before he or I leave this planet.
