He’s breaking records even from the grave.

Yes, despite passing away now three years ago, Pop deity Michael Jackson is continuing to extend his lead as the most groundbreaking creative act of all time.

For, as of this year, he has has exceeded worldwide sales of 1 billion copies.

Full story below…

According to the Michael Jackson Estate, the icon- who scored a whopping 13 #1 singles and 17 Grammys- to name just two of his achievements- has shifted over 1 billion albums across the globe since his solo debut in 1972.

Calculated by combining the sales sales of the icon’s oft celebrated back catalog of music, the news is expected to be confirmed by Sony Music in coming weeks following Jackson’s immortalization at Grauman’s Chinese Theater on January 26th, in celebration of his impact on Pop culture.
Legendary indeed.

That's great news, but there are already other topics about this.

Re: Confirmed: Michael Jackson Sells Over 1 Billion Records Worldwide

Hmm I'm quite skeptical about this. It would be incredible to have this confirmed by Sony.

Re: Confirmed: Michael Jackson Sells Over 1 Billion Records Worldwide

This was posted on January 5th (also in the thread about Grauman's Chinese Theatre tribute), and still no media reaction...

There was a thing a few days ago, but it was just PR bull crap so I'm not sure.

Re: Confirmed: Michael Jackson Sells Over 1 Billion Records Worldwide

This article actually doesn't confirm anything, it still looks like PR shit to me, as mentioned above. Misleading title?

I am not skeptical about this..I mean after all it IS MJ we are talking about here,,,LOL....however...I like you would like this confirmed by Sony as well.

Re: Confirmed: Michael Jackson Sells Over 1 Billion Records Worldwide

I'd kill for some reputable source to say this, just to prove Michael is second in sales only to The Beatles. He has sold 750 million records pre-HIStory according to Sony so this is easily possible going on how they're counting record sales in terms of videos, singles, concert DVD's, etc.

Re: Confirmed: Michael Jackson Sells Over 1 Billion Records Worldwide

Mod note - I changed the title of the thread untill we get confirmation

Still it Will be awesome for Michael if Sony confirms these sales

That figure of 1,000,000,000 is probably the most accurate I have seen............

.....The media will never want to admit it though!!!!

This would mean album sales, dvds, singles all that in total? That would be amazing if that was confirmed.

I have already asked this to the Online team and they said they'll get back to me.

I hope they confirm it's true. That would be AWESOME!

 That would NOT be surprising...Michael has been SO underestimated for SO long :timer:

It will be GREAT to get that confirmed though, so we can CELEBRATE!!! :cheeky:

Like others said this was mentioned a few years back but it was units not albums etc. so everything released with mjs name on it

I have already asked this to the Online team and they said they'll get back to me.

we dont need such confirmations, we do need official statistics, lists, records... of album or single sales...., completely, album by album, including those from the 70s.

Has anyone else sold 1 Billion records?

No, nobody has ever sold 1 billion records..., its impossible, physically, technically, in distribution, production...

Its just PR, for instance, how could an artist sell 1 billion records if his albums (and songs) are not on the list of 100 best sellers....?
See the point?

The Beatles have outsold Michael by a good margin... The billion sales like Moonwalker Fan said is more a publicity tagline to help improve back catalogue sales of The Beatles work, but combining all media sales featuring The Beatles brand, the number wouldn't be too far off I'd imagine. Michael would be the same, combining studio and compliation album sales, the millions of singles, concert DVDs, music video sales, music video collection DVDs, ringtones, feature films and any other form of media that holds his name, the sales definitely add up to well in excess of 800 million and easily more.

If nothing else, this would firmly prove once and for all that MJ outsold Elvis, who is currently and incorrectly held as the second best selling artist of all time, even though not one of his albums is in the top sellers list and Michael has more than anyone else on the list with five.

I was at HMV one day and was looking at the cds and I saw Mariah Carey hits cd and on the back it she sold 200 million in album sales, videos, etc. So I think for Michael this is possible. I hope.

If it does get confirmed someday I will cry because one that is a great accomplishment and two Michael isn't here to see it. I wish he was here.

Source: SONY MUSIC USA/UNIVERSAL MUSIC

Here are the total numbers internationally, last updated July 31st 2010.
Numbers will include Jackson 5 sales but will be separated accordingly so readers can easily see MJ's solo sales plus Jackson 5 sales. Also, It will break it down with album sales, download/single sales, plus it will include ALL DVD/VHS and other forms of musical release.
Remember, these are the actual recorded sales numbers by both Sony and Universal and are not inflated in anyway.
There are some sales from certain countries that are very hard to track, even by Sony. So these numbers are about as close as anyone is going to get.
As you can see, the initial 750,000,000 units quoted by MJ was not far off. This does not include any pirated, illegally downloaded, or fan made albums, nor does it include any unofficial releases.

Hitsville: Now, if it’s fair to toss in the Jackson Five’s sales with Michael’s, it’s fair to toss in Paul McCartney’s with his previous band. What’s his totals compared to Jackson’s? Diana Ross’ totals as a solo artist combined with with the Supremes?
Guillaume: Diana Ross/Supremes total is ahead, not that far from 200 million records sold. Paul McCartney is the master. He sold around 170 million records on his own, added to over 500 million with the Beatles; that is over two thirds of the road to a billion! Obviously, on such a list, Michael Jackson wouldn’t be at 2, considering the three other Beatles would be ahead of him. Macca with 670m, Lennon with 620m, Harrison with 550m and Ringo with 525m, then Michael Jackson with around 465m. When we see how hard it is to sell 10 million records (and despite what most people think it has always been very hard), those numbers are from another world!
