Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) -- “The cinema as we know it is falling apart,” says Francis Ford Coppola.

“It’s a period of incredible change,” says the director of “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now.” “We used to think of six, seven big film companies. Every one of them is under great stress now. Probably two or three will go out of business and the others will just make certain kind of films like ‘Harry Potter’ -- basically trying to make ‘Star Wars’ over and over again, because it’s a business.”

The movies that are made now are boring. They're just designed to make a lot of money on the 1st weekend with their overblown effects. There's no interesting actors or actresses either. They're mainly just Beverly Hills 90210 rejects, lol.

that's why i say Michael Jackson kept the music industry afloat, and sony couldn't survive without him.

there is no Michael Jackson type director or actor in the movie business, or writer, so...hollywood is not long to go. Speilberg and Lucas lost their magic thirty years ago.

I don't think its falling apart, at least not money wise I don't believe, in terms of quality films then yes in some ways and that's the fault of the big name film distributors; there more willing to distribute crappy comedy films with people like Jenifer Aniston in it rather than any film that's meaningful...

What does Mike and Sony have to do with movie quality? Some people just have to mention Mike in topics that has no relevance to him.

everything. just think about it. because i don't mention him in every post, though this is an MJ site. it's about good product. how about that?

it's always going to fall, if the product is bad. california is complaining about being in debt. how come hollywood hasn't been able to bail them out? it's just a matter of time.

the movie industry is going to be ok.. it may fall into a depression, but unlike the music industry you have to be talented to make it... there are AWESOME directors/producers/actors/writers etc.. companies will go belly up but it will return. if u look in the independant sercet you'll find some awesome films.. theres a reason why more independant films are making it mainstream, because in the end talent is whats going to sell in the movie industry.. people can not be easily zombied by movies as they are in music. Everything will be fine.. even in the great depression the main source of economic growth was entertainment and alchohol.. thats sports, plays, radio, and cimema.. Yes every industry struggled but entertainment always prevails, everyone desires and wants escapism... the enternet and free download, getting movies at such cheap costs cause alot of people to do only what will bring in the bucks.. but others striving talents will be found and brought foward

it's nice that you have such hope, but Coppola is inside the industry and he would know..and the reality is, you need talent everywhere to survive. and the fact that they have dumbed down to assessing the first week in box office, is a good indication that they don't have confidence, anymore. I don't see the independent talent you're talking about. the majority of films are looking for cheap thrills..and where the critics used to look for substance in a film, now they praise when a woman takes off her top. I'll never forget how Halle Berry had to take off her top to get an academy award.

as far as your comment on alchohol..oh well...kinda sad, really, that it comes down to that.

and even in sports..there's a threat of a lockout in two major american sports at least..

The porno industry makes more money than the regular entertainment business, unfortunately.

sad. welp... everything is always changing and sadly much of the important aspects of life itself seem to be going south while unimportant things like the Ipad, cell phones, blah blah and blah are furthering in progress. :[

I think that CGI and cliches are ruining the movie industry. Basically every movie that Hollywood has put out in the last decade or so has a whole bunch of CGI and plots that we've all seen before, many times. there ARE a few 'good" movies from the last decade or so that don't really seem cliched, and have good original like qualities. Juno, The Ring, Inception, Avatar, Napoleon Dynamite, Mean Girls, just to name a few.

The two things I noticed lately in the movie industry are -

1. They're making an awful lot of remakes.
2. They're investing an awful lot in 3d.

So, if people get tired of all the remakes and don't keep an interest in 3d, they may be in trouble.

Remakes means no new ideas, so does gimmicky 3D. I want new ideas.

gettin tired and starting to hate remakes, i hate too much cgi, i hate over the top cheesy comedy... i want to see more inteligent, creative and thought provoking movies

well allthough I'm not longer a teenager (40) I enjoy going to the movies. If it were any good movie for me to see that is. now It's stupid teen movie, vampyre, or some over paid actor (tom cruise and the likes) doing dumb action movies with nothing 'but actions scenes we seen tons before, without a real script or actors that can't act. I look at whats offering at the theater and find nothing that interests me or targeting at my age group. So maybe I and Coppola are bored or right.

some need not to pay attention to this like its the gospel.. someone said Francis knows what he's talking about because he's "in the bizness".. he is a struggeling director, that has made 7 movies in the last 7 years that only a couple made it mainstream and only 1 of them were a pretty big hit.. this is coming from a fusterated artist, it is falling apart... FOR HIM! thats what it feels like! the industry needs to be revised YES!! but its not falling apart... No one can sit here and say the movie industry is falling apart when 11 out of the top 12 best selling movies in the box office have been within this millenium.. 2000-present... he mentions that people are trying to re-create "star wars" etc.. which is true! and sad.. but definatly understandable.. with an industry that is still actually making money, in a strugling economy becomes extra hungry for more $$ for security.. (side note the big bugets cost more to make aswell)..

someone in the industry, when they look back to the biggest hits of the past and know they are majority big buget films, they are going to do what sells.. the movie industry is making more money now then they were in the past.. More people are coming to see movies, and the ticket prices are higher.. that says alot..

Wow, firmly disagree with him, especially about Harry Potter, becoz Harry Potter is a fantastic franchise. OK the greatness of Harry Potter are THE BOOKS :) , and I think David Yates ruined the movie franchise...
But anyways I disagree with him, those movies are great :)

And to me, I have been watching films since the 70s and my favorites times of movies is definitely the 2000s till now!!
I hated the 80s in that matter, movie were terrible, and I am not a fan of Coppola´s films, but "The Godfather", and thats becoz I am a fan of the BOOK :)

i agree with him... most of today's movies are boring for me :mello:

i love watching movies from the 30's-90's... they might not have the awesome special effects of today, but they have great stories, great actors, etc... :wild:

^^ It stands for > Computer-Generated Imagery

Oh, thanks. I don't like CGI too much. Especially on animations. Oh how much more I love the good old Disney movies like The Lion King, Aladdin, Cinderella etc. than Toy Story, Cars or any other CGI'd film! (Altough I do like Finding Nemo :p)

Like Chaos said, I think, too, that the movie industry is "falling apart" when it comes to quality (all the remakes - no new ideas, and I strongly dislike the cheesy romantic comedies with absolutely no purpose (but I guess many people find them entertaining)) but financially it's still going strong..
