Supe, you better share Stevie's Perfect Angel on here mate.

here's a massive Stevie fan and one of the greatest keyboardists of this generation, Mark de Clive-Lowe, laying down the Detroit-UK soul:

Mark de Clive-Lowe (feat. Bembe Segue) - Heaven

here's his take on I Can't Help It and on Soul in general:

»The thing about this song. A few of you have copped it already. Stevie Wonder is one of the greatest. We talked about Wayne Shorter before, we mentioned Miles. Stevie's just bananas! And I hope that everyone in this room knows that for real! No one brought everything together in a way that had never been done before like Stevie did. And when I hear Michael Jackson singing that song, I love it but I'm thinking, “okay, so Stevie obviously sang it to send it to Michael, to learn it. Can I please hear the Stevie Wonder version? I mean, dude's a don, dude's a don. And what came before him, with someone like Ray Charles, who... I just want to touch on this quickly ‘cause it came to mind, thinking of Stevie. That is, what Ray Charles did, was brought together the music from the church, with the music from the street. And he brought together Gospel, and he brought together the Blues. And it's a semi-esoteric idea, but he brought together spirituality and earthiness. Which is what, for me, human beings are here for. And that became Soul music. So that's what it's all about, really. Channeling energy, being aware of those things, but it's how you express it, on this planet, as a human being. That if you, if it doesn't sound like Stevie or Marvin [Gaye] or Curtis [Mayfield] or whatever, that doesn't make it not Soul music. I'm just saying, I like that, it's a nice kind of perspective. Any questions before we rock another beat?«

and he goes on to break it down technically. if you're into keys, then read this:

^Makes me want to learn keyboards really badly. I also love his quotes. Stevie's first album was actually a tribute to Ray Charles, and Stevie has in fact performed "I Can't Help It" at numerous concerts. It sounds different from the arrangement done by MJ. Less bass and more keyboard work.

Here's Stevie performing "Perfect Angel" on Soul Train:

And here it is live in London, though there's a cut near the end:

that's interesting, i never knew that.. and it's never too late to learn keys. if you have a passion for it, it'll come naturally. especially with you being an avid Stevie fan - all of his awesome techincalities are passed down and embedded subconsiously in your head by now lol

i was thinking of sending it to him on his MySpace LOL but maybe he specifically meant the studio demo. which, i'm sure you'd join me in agreeing, we'd commit homicide for.

Johnny "Guitar" Watson ~ Gangster Of Love

Carl Anderson - Buttercup [1985]

was intended for MJ around the mid-70s.

Leon Ware: Moon Ride [Stax 2008]

there was a very quiet Stax release from Leon Ware last month called Moon Ride.

it's a beautful album from top to bottom and he goes back to the soulful, sensual slow jams. i could easily imagine Marvin taking hold of this one.

here's JB covering a Hank Ballard classic with only his fingers, the band and his Hammond organ. he's really an underrated musician and keyboardist. this tune's one of my quintessential Hammond picks.

James Brown - Every Beat of My Heart

this is my tune of 2008, from a class Texan producer called S1 of the group Strange Fruit Project. the blend of soulful melodies, organs, rhodes, jazz guitar, and strings makes for an ultimate nu-soul track.

Gerri Granger ~ Hard Times

Square Presents: The Mike We Like (Remixes 2006)

this unsigned producer made an MJ (re)mixtape two years ago which was overall pretty dull but i always liked his take on In The Closet and Butterflies. soulful and mellow (but repetitive) chords.

^ i like In The Closet, but Butterflies seems to be somehow too noisy to my ears, lol.

This is a great soulful rendition of The Beatles’ song:
Esther Phillips - And I Love Him

And a remix by Ltj Experience, with just two lines of vocals repeating but added a sweet instrumental part:

1998

a pretty rare Lauryn Hill-produced track

She Was Just A Friend feat. Anthony Hamilton & Algebra - Miri Ben-Ari
nothing to do with Hamilton, but i loved how Miri brought the violin prominently to hip-hop for even just a moment. it's a shame it didn't continue, i always like her album. and even before she did it, i always wondered about the idea.

Marlena Shaw ~ Feel like Making Love

Herbie Hancock & Patrice Rushen - Give It All Your Heart [1982]

one of my favourite funk-soul-ballads, i think i already posted this on the vocoder thread but i never then recognised that Patrice Rushen was duetting with Herbie here. can't think of a cooler collab..
