Lessons from Michael – The Power of Passion

Whether you were a fan of Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, or one who saw only his idiosyncrasies, there are many lessons for all of us in his trials and tribulations, turbulence, yet triumph. As a teacher and healer at heart, I was in awe with the connectedness he had with millions of people from all over the world. I have been obsessed observing and studying the magnetism of this man who had been somewhat in hiding in recent years. The tragedies of such a talent can be explained another time, but it is often the price paid for fame and fortune by creative, sensitive people living in an insensitive world.

As the author of a book on influence and persuasion, Forget Selling, I see Michael Jackson as the icon of influence. His charm and charisma was mesmerizing. But what was the magic? What are the secrets to his success so we can all optimize our potential for a future of unlimited possibilities. In fact, Michael disputed that the sky was the limit, as he saw NO limits. That is secret # 1.

Lessons from Michael

1. Possibility Thinking Only. There are no limits to what you may accomplish, except those self-imposed by limitations of the mind. All of the champions I had interviewed in my book,
Winning! had a flash of their greatness at an early age.

2. Be an Imitator. It was reported that Michael could watch the movement and maneuvers of the most accomplished and imitate their work. Whether it was singing, dancing, or even marketing, he would observe, integrate, and implement.

3. Be an Innovator. After he mastered imitating “the greats,” he would take it up a notch and become even greater. That kind of creation and innovation is what sets us apart from the masses as we transcend from being just good to great!

4. Be Different and Dimensional. Whether it was wearing just one glove when the rest of the world was wearing two, if you want to rise above you must stand out and be the purple cow.

5. Make Change a Habit. Change and change again, and again. Once people have you figured out, you become boring and they become disinterested. Change and newness renews excitement and keeps people engaged. This is true for personal relationships as well as a business strategy.

6. The Element of Surprise. Kids like to play peek-a-boo, but we never lose our love for the seduction of the surprise. Michael sang songs that if with your eyes closed, you would think the angels had descended upon you. But then he portrayed the “bad guy” with equal conviction of character. Be diverse in your thinking and be willing to risk new roles to avoid the ruts and routines that steal our excitement and passion for life.

7. God Is in the Details. Like his flawless memorial service, Michael always performed to perfection and made a personal commitment to always “top” himself in the next performance. He was perfection in motion. He studied, researched, and rehearsed endlessly. As a child it was reported that he always had a pencil and paper in hand to write down quotes and words of wisdom, but he also wrote down new words and concepts as a personal assignment.

8. Be Curious. The desire to learn more with an undying inquisitiveness propels us to explore, discover, and grow. It is the spark of all innovation and fans the fires of brilliance.

9. Love Is the Way. Come always from a loving place within. Everyone who intimately knew the person, not just the personality, referred to his love and kindness. Love is the most positive, powerful force in the universe. If Emmet Fox is right, “If only you could love enough you would be the happiest and most powerful being in the world.” Try it!

10. Commit to Never Quit. Know who you are (your unique gift), what you want (your vision), and have a plan or strategy of how to get there. Be the “come-back” kid. At age 50, Michael was about to come back one last time. In the words of Sir Winston Churchill, “Never, never, never quit.” It is also wise to know what you don’t want or to have a “NOT To Do” list as well. Eliminate the distractions in your life that derail you from your purpose, passion, and mission. That may include activities and people who are no longer contributing to your ultimate success, happiness, and joy.

11. Dare to Dream…and Dream BIG. Michael grew up in Gary, Indiana, from very humble beginnings, but he dreamed big and was driven to manifest his desire to be the very best which is without dispute. Mission accomplished. He referred to Michelangelo’s wisdom in stating that the creator must die but his works will live on. What belief do you have that moves you in the direction of your dreams? In my first motivational keynote, I also referred to Michelangelo. “In every rock of marble I see a statue, I merely chisel away so that others may see what I already know. How can your dream come true, if you have not first dreamed the dream?” Your journey to greatness begins with a dream.

12. Be True to Yourself. March to your own drummer. A singer must sing, a dancer must dance, and a writer must write. Know your God-given, unique gift and don’t die with the music in you. YOU’VE GOT TO SING YOUR SONG.

As I reflect on his life, it reminds me of the magnetism, influence, connectedness, and generosity of my own father. He only had thousands at his funeral, not millions, but he lived in a small town of just 3,000 in rural Wisconsin. He was much older, 80 at the time of his passing on, and he was not a celebrity. But, like Michael Jackson, he was a person of passion. When you have passion and purpose you do become a person of power and influence. It is simple math and cannot be denied. He also loved music and danced as if he were a spirit without a body. Music is the universal language of love and thus breaks down all barriers and boundaries. It unifies people of all creeds, color, and cadences. It gives soul to the universe wings to the mind. If Emmet Fox was right, “A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all…If only you could love enough you would be the happiest and most powerful being in the world.”

To Michael

How did this undying love come to be ?
The essence of your soul reached out to me
after that fateful day in June of 2009.
When the doctor committed his crime
Leaving you to die alone
Dimming the light that once shone

I love you if you're famous
I love you totally unknown
cos' it's not about the icon, but about
coming home
Home to a love once lost and now found
You make me whole and love abounds

I love you black or whiite
I love you day and night
I love you with all my heart
I can't bear to be apart,
you now in spirit, I'm still here
But my silent prayers you hear

I love you for the words you say
Staying true to yourself without sway
All the while, sharing love so pure
and receiving love, that enables to endure
your pain, trial and tribulations
and the endless speculations

I love you for being caring and kind
I love you even if you cannot unwind
I love you in your Giving Tree
Composing music in Bliss and joyfully

I love you for wanting to give back
I love you for never cutting slack
I love you for keeping the faith
I love you for rehearsals running late
I love you for dancing under the moon
I love you for making me swoon

I love you young and old
I your pants silver or gold
I love your irresistable smile
I love you when you'r lonely
I love you when you're blue
I love you because you're you!

Michael Jackson Was a Man of Compassion

MJ-Remembered.jpeg

DEAR EDITOR:

For two decades, I worked in various segments of the entertainment industry. What began as a part-time job as a bodyguard ended with a lifetime of memories of so many top-name performers; stars such as the Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Seger and Elton John and far too many to recall here and now.

As so many of the young men who came to this line of work, I was a returning veteran from Vietnam working his way through college, every night acting as a bodyguard for the world's biggest stars. We were the big fellows who wore the bright yellow shirts and stood in front of the stages at all the concerts in Cleveland and cities far away.

It was the 1980s, and the Jackson Tour was coming to the Cleveland Stadium that summer. Little did I know, this week-long event would come to define and remain paramount in my memory, only to come back in a flood of tears as the world now mourns the loss of an icon.

The Jackson tour was scheduled for the old Cleveland stadium. On Monday morning, all the trucks and equipment began arriving in preparation for the show that weekend. Several of my co-workers began our week's tour of duty at the stadium. Our schedule and duties were to work around the clock and keep on-lookers and the adventurous types out of the stadium. As for the remaining members of the work details such as stage hands, riggers, lighting people, sound and etc., well, Michael Jackson made it clear that he wanted those men and women to have a balanced meal cooked on scene three times per day plus a snack at the end of their shifts at night - with no shortcomings.

As for the security crew, we were forbidden to enter the dining hall per strict orders of the local promoter. Every morning, we would indulge in a cup of day old coffee and a pinch of salt to take away the harsh and bitter taste.

That is until one of Jackson's personal managers inquired to why I was not eating breakfast with the rest of the crew. When I told her of the standing order she said, ''I will be right back, please do not move from here.''

Shortly thereafter, she returned and informed me that I was now ordered to gather all my men working security and, starting this morning, we were to sit down and enjoy three meals and the final snack just as all the rest of the working crew.

When questioned by our superiors, Michael's personal manager stated, ''This order comes from the top, Michael himself. I called him this morning and told him of this blatant act of discrimination and he was furious. He then told me to make sure those men were fed and fed well or else he would cancel the show.''

The man's music and style has eluded me over the decades. However, his kindness and humanitarian gestures remain etched in my memory. He was a bright star, the brightest in my lifetime. He was a super-nova burning far brighter than most humans and yet he still took the time to reach out to six young security guards to make sure even the lowest of his employees/staff were cared for with the same considerations as his closest managers were.

For that simple act of compassion and understanding, Michael Jackson holds a special place in my heart and now my memories.

Michael Jackson, The Man in the Mirror – A True Artist Departs

michael-jackson.jpg

Reports have confirmed that Michael Jackson, a great musical icon, has died at the age of 50. Many people will be mourning his loss.

Hearing about the death of Michael Jackson has been pretty shocking for me. I understand the cycle of life and I respect this process. However, it is most strange to me because I just heard the song “Man in the Mirror” a few nights ago while watching a rerun of CBS’s drama “Cold Case.” As I listened to the lyrics, I said to myself, “What a powerful artist. What a divine message.”

His message is what made him charismatic. His message was his charisma. His message of hope and being the miracle we all want in our lives is what made him magnetic. This magnetism brought light to many great causes such as homelessness, world hunger, HIV/AIDS awareness and more. He was one of the few celebrities of his time who lend his celebrity to charitable causes. Because of his dedication many other celebrities now follow his example of giving.

Yes, Michael Jackson’s life is not without controversy and I will in no way lend attention to these matters. What I will say is this, he was a great artist. He was a musical genius. Future generations of lyricists, musicians, and artists can learn from him as an artist. They can learn the importance of having a message, a positive message that can impact the world.

So before we cast stones, let us remember the good of the conscious creative artist and know that his creativity, art, and charitable giving has made this world a better place for many. As the song “Man in the mirror says, “I’m starting with the man in the mirror.” Let us remember to give and create consciously. Let us remember to use our gifts and talents to impart a message of hope, love, inspiration, and joy to others.

Until next time, be a giver, be a message of hope, and let the Creative Spirit move you.

Michael Dedicated Concert to Murdered Japanese Boy

Another example of Michael's compassion and love:

In September 1987, Michael Jackson dedicated the Japan leg of his Bad Tour in memory of Yoshiaki Hagiwara.

Yoshiaki Hagiwara, a five year old boy, was kidnapped and murdered while Michael was touring in Japan.

Michael heard about Yoshiaki before one of his concerts there, and made a comment about this incident during the performance:

"I am very sorry and deeply saddened to hear about Yoshiaki. If I could, I would like to rush to his parents to express my words of sympathy and pay tribute to Yoshiyaki. I would like to dedicate my Japanese tour to Yoshiyaki. Yoshiyaki, I know you’re out there watching us. I hope such a brutal and heartbreaking thing never happens again. And I love you."

Michael also made a donation of $20,000 dollars to the grieving family.

On the sleeve of this vinyl record is written:
“Dedicated to Yoshiaki Hagiwara
May such a terrible thing never happen again.
I will always love you. -Michael Jackson.”

Also noted:

“A Portion of Michael Jackson’s royalties from this record is donated to Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, a camp for children with cancer.”

A Smile and Hello: Meeting Michael Jackson in Berlin

6a00d8341c630a53ef0115707defa9970c-800wi

Photo: Michael Jackson's 1988 concert poster in Berlin.

When I arrived in Berlin in June 1988 for the start of what turned into the Particularly Bad Shoes and Brown Gravy Tour (more on the name later), I knew Michael Jackson also was making a tour stop there.
Jackson, at the height of his fame, was in the middle of his 16-month "Bad" world tour, which at the time became the largest grossing and most attended tour in history.

I was embarking on a dog-and-pony show tour staged for the benefit of Western media by sports authorities in East Germany, which then was at the height of its athletic fame (or infamy).

Our tour got its (unofficial) name after we were served brown gravy on everything -- including sliced pineapple in Leipzig -- and my colleague, Jere Longman of the New York Times, accurately observed there were two kinds of shoes in East Germany: bad shoes, and particularly bad shoes.

Anyway, no sooner had I checked into my hotel in what then was West Berlin than I realized Jackson also was a guest in the hotel, because there were hundreds of fans on the street chanting his name.

But I didn't think anything more of my relative proximity to the pop superstar until I was walking from my room to the elevators so I could join some friends for dinner.

In a hallway stood two very large men, who tensed as I approached. They were outside the open door of a room I was passing. When I reached the open door, I looked inside the room, and there, unmistakably, was Jackson, looking right in my direction.

I said, "Hello.'' He smiled and returned the greeting. The bodyguards, expecting me to ask for an autograph or something else that would bother their charge, seemed taken aback when I simply kept walking, satisfied with the exchange of pleasantries.

As it turned out, Jackson would be inadvertently involved in some communist chest-thumping not unlike what I would see in East Germany.

The Washington Post reported that Jackson and East German figure skating icon Katarina Witt "squared off on opposite sides of the Berlin Wall this evening in an East-West battle of the bands that delighted the city's music fans and gave headaches to East Germany's Communist authorities. Witt hosted a concert in East Berlin -- featuring Canadian singer Bryan Adams and the British group Big Country -- that clearly was designed to placate fans barred from traveling crosstown to hear Jackson performing in the western side of this divided city.''

The Post said East German authorities counted 120,000 fans at their open-air concert, exactly double the total given for Jackson's open-air performance.

Three months later, East Germany, a country of 16 million, would win more gold medals at the 1988 Olympics than the United States, nearly 20 times more populous.

That was East Germany's final Olympics as an independent nation. The Berlin Wall fell in 1989, and the two German countries re-unified in 1990.

Then as now, his smile and "hello'' are indelible to me. They are my lasting memories of a 5-second encounter that was better than any autograph.

Michael Jackson’s talent transcended language and culture differences. As a testament to this, the above graffiti portrait can be found in Berlin, Germany. Similar tributes can be seen and heard in cities around the world. The artist is MTO Graff.

Gratitude

Michael stayed incredibly humble all of his life despite his massive talents and unique gifts. Not taking credit for the songs as they seemed to fall into his lap from the heavens above. Ever grateful to be on the receiving end of those gifts, he expressed his gratitude in a multitude of ways. And not just the big stuff either, a beautiful sunset or a child smiling and a flower blooming exactly the way it was supposed to be, made him thankful for that miracle of life, the poetic beauty of life. That is a sign of a very spiritual man.

Have you ever read his short essay "The Last Tear" ? It speaks of a tear of gratitude. This tear of gratitude represents the letting go of the bitterness, the anger and the resentment, so that love can flow again from the heart and the infinite Source it came from. In gratitude you can then fully experience the good, the connection, that which binds despite the petty differences. Are you ready to shed that last tear too ?

The Last Tear (written by Michael Jackson)

Your words stabbed my heart, and I cried tears of pain. "Get out!" I shouted. "These are the last tears I'll ever cry for you." So you left.
I waited hours, but you didn't return. That night by myself I cried tears of frustration.
I waited weeks, but you had nothing to say. Thinking of your voice, I cried tears of loneliness.
I waited months, but you left no sign for me. In the depths of my heart, I cried tears of despair.

How strange that all these tears could not wash away the hurt! Then one thought of love pierced my bitterness. I remembered you in the sunlight, with a smile as sweet as May wine. A tear of gratitude started to fall, and miraculously, you were back. Soft fingers touched my cheek, and bent over for a kiss.
"Why have you come?" I whispered.
"To wipe away your last tear," you replied. "It was the one you saved for me."

Why Me ?

10-following-loves-lead.jpg

Sometimes I feel so alone
Like a stranger in a strange land
This thing that’s come over me
Nobody understands

Why me?

Why am I the only one
for miles and miles
to see the true brilliance of the Sun?
Others around me are walking in the rain
without a clue,
dark clouds blocking their view
The weight of their pain
blinds them to the Truth…

The brightness of His light
that was here
and still remains

165629_189023454460322_100000580069880_640347_8305866_n.jpg

Why me?

Why am I no longer chained
to the pain of my past?
Why have I been set free,
chosen for this task?
To live in the light of His Love
and reveal the Truth
that’s been shown to me

Why me?

Thank God
There are others around the world
who see this brilliance of the Sun
I know I'm not entirely alone
But at home
I'm the only one
Everyone else is wearing a mask
They think it's me
who is different,
lost my way
But the light of the Sun follows me
and they're left standing in the rain
Which leads me to ask…

Why NOT me?

Yes, I am different
but does that make me wrong?
I have been called
to sing His song
I'm a stranger in a strange land
asked to run this race
My mask has been removed
and nobody wants to see my face!
The light of Truth which follows me
reflects their pain they cannot see
Acknowledging the pain
means change

Take off your mask
so I can see your face!
I AM a stranger in a strange land
Let me help you understand

Yes, indeed…
Why NOT me?

Michael Jackson - King of Fashion

michaeljackson-250609.jpg

Michael Jackson was a pop icon. He reached the zenith of pop culture wearing one glove on his hand and without him noticing, he was able to influence an entire generation, not only in the United States, but the rest of the world as well. He gave out simple pieces like military badges and fedora imprints that, for some time, oozed more power than his music. His classic "Thriller" look-red leather, zippers a Jheri curls-transformed into a more majestic look that equaled his King of Pop reputation. When President Reagan invited him to the White House in 194 to receive an award, he arrived wearing a blue sequined cropped jacked with gold sequined epaulet, his signature glove, black loafers with spats and aviator sunglasses.Classy.

michael-jackson-style.jpg

Michael Jackson is not just the King of Pop. He is also the King of Fashion. Once again, let's reminisce his shining appearance on and off the spotlight.

Michael Jackson was also famous for his simple white-black shirt while moonwalking, and unique designs and luxurious dresses. His turning point was the Swarovski Crystal Shirt. It combined simple designs with simple colors and it can be worn almost anywhere.

Everything about Michael's life was hinted by elements of the majestic and royal. It can be evidenced in his stage costumes, MTV dresses, mansion and cars. His Red velvet cloak Clothing and Catherine Bowman Jewelry Crowns are clear representations of his love for majesty and royalty.

michael-jackson-style-1.jpg

Here are some of Michael's amazingly simple items but spells class when configured together: White-black Jazz costume, black crystal suit, white crystal gloves and crystal socks. It was a classic ensemble that perfectly matched each other. Michael Jackson put it on during his Bad Tour. It was the first world concert tour by Michael as a solo artist that reached countries like Japan, Australia, United States and Europe. It lasted from September 12, 1987 to January 2, 1989. By far, The "Bad" World Tour was the most profitable tour in the world.

mjstyle1.jpg

Michael's attention for detail is outstanding. He has his own way of accessorizing from shoulder patch to belts and chest straps. Any accessories can be worn with different styles of clothing, and Michael can do one heck of a job.

In general, Michael's fashion sensibility was mainly composed of classic styles spruced up by his own personal touch like his trademark armbands and other military inspired accessories. This simply shows that there are many things that can show men's tastes and personality through their choice of clothing.

Michael chose his gloved hand that touched the whole world.

Happy International Children's day

International Children's Day flag

The green background symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility; We are surrounded by the ability to grow. All we have to do is reach out and embrace it. The red & yellow, black & white figures represent diversity and tolerance. Our children are the key to peace and tolerance of: race, religion, physical, mental, and social diversity. The star, which is made up of the figures' legs, represents light. We can be a light for the world, if we choose. The five points on the star represent the continents. We are all part of one true race, the human race. The earth figure, which is directly in the center, represents our earthly home and all the blessings on it, which God has given us all to share and respect. The large blue circle engulfing the figures symbolizes peace and God's universal love. It also represents the unity that we can achieve if we reach out to one another in love. Blue symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. The blue figure at the top represents God, who is the author & finisher of all things. God loves all of us equally and we should be striving to imitate that love (which is represented by the figures reaching out to each other).

International Children's Day

Regarding the International Children's Day, it is widely celebrated on June 1. Children's Day had its origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva in 1925. The June 1 date has a Chinese-USA origin - and nothing to do with Communism. In 1925, the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. This, of course, coincided with the conference mentioned above. June 1 somehow died out in the USA, only to be revived a couple of years ago. However, each country choses its own day to commemorate it.

Excerpts from Michael's Oxford Speech

Children's Universal Bill of Rights, the tenets of which are:
1. The right to be loved without having to earn it
2. The right to be protected, without having to deserve it
3. The right to feel valuable, even if you came into the world with nothing
4. The right to be listened to without having to be interesting
5. The right to be read a bedtime story, without having to compete with the evening news
6. The right to an education without having to dodge bullets at schools
7. The right to be thought of as adorable - (even if you have a face that only a mother could love).

Love, ladies and gentlemen, is the human family's most precious legacy, its richest bequest, its golden inheritance. And it is a treasure that is handed down from one generation to another. Previous ages may not have had the wealth we enjoy. Their houses may have lacked electricity, and they squeezed their many kids into small homes without central heating. But those homes had no darkness, nor were they cold. They were lit bright with the glow of love and they were warmed snugly by the very heat of the human heart. Parents, undistracted by the lust for luxury and status, accorded their children primacy in their lives.

If you enter this world knowing you are loved and you leave this world knowing the same, then everything that happens in between can he dealt with. A professor may degrade you, but you will not feel degraded, a boss may crush you, but you will not be crushed, a corporate gladiator might vanquish you, but you will still triumph. How could any of them truly prevail in pulling you down? For you know that you are an object worthy of love. The rest is just packaging.
But if you don't have that memory of being loved, you are condemned to search the world for something to fill you up. But no matter how much money you make or how famous you become, you will still fell empty. What you are really searching for is unconditional love, unqualified acceptance. And that was the one thing that was denied to you at birth.

One Rose for Michael

one-rose-for-michael

November 22, 1963. December 8, 1980. August 31, 1997. Dates imprinted in my mind and memory. Kennedy, Lennon and Diana. I count the years when the dates appear on the calendar with feelings of acceptance now, remembering a President, childhood icon and a Princess. All three have a place in my life, frozen in time, young and beautiful forever.

June 25, 2009, is different. On that day my life changed, just as it did for many people on this planet. When Michael went home, it was as if the energy of love followed him…all those tears for a man who gave so much too so many for so many years. Then came the realization that indeed he left behind that love, wrapped up in a million broken hearts that now carry marching orders to continue Michael’s message of unity and changing the world.

And now that date approaches once again. For those who love him, the desire to honor him on that day requires thought and private reflection…how do I as one person express how I feel? What do I feel? What would bring that beautiful smile one more time? Those who are able will make the pilgrimage to Forest Lawn; some will spend the day with children and hear that wonderful laugh echoing through the young ones; some will support a favorite charity or share a date with Michael’s music and films; some will dance alone or write or simply keep him close in thought. What matters is the love, just as it always has when it surrounds Michael.

We know that Michael loved flowers, sunflowers and roses. Thanks to the urging of one love in Michael’s life, flowers have surrounded him in his silence everyday he’s been gone. And, if one feels inspired to gift him with roses once again, this is an offer to do just that. ‘One Rose for Michael’ was organized by Sofie Strandberg last year, and the opportunity to take part in this lovely idea is presented to us again.

This group has planted 1000 trees in Michael’s memory and has supported the AIDS walk in Los Angeles. Last Christmas, they provided food, presents and toys to six needy families, also in Michael’s name; a shining example of moving forward, helping others and exhibiting a consciousness of what Michael was, and is, asking of us.

There are many varied ways for people to express their love. It’s individual and each is as wonderful and poignant as another. You can be a part of this bouquet for Michael, one rose amongst many; one expression of that love, united with others in respect and memory of a very special man.

Sofie thanks everyone as we hold hands, remember and celebrate Michael’s life and legacy.

TRANSCRIPT OF RADIO SHOW:

MICHEL MARTIN, host:

Switching gears now. Tomorrow, thousands are expected to gather at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to mourn the death of Michael Jackson. As part of our ongoing coverage of this final chapter in the story of the King of Pop, we've been examining his influence on music and the culture.

Today, a conversation with an artist who worked with Jackson, singer-songwriter James Ingram. He's credited, along with Quincy Jones, with writing "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)," from the "Thriller" album, and James Ingram joins us now. Welcome, thank you for joining us.

Mr. JAMES INGRAM (Songwriter): How are you doing, Michel?

MARTIN: Well, take me through the process of coming to this. I understand - now let me hear if I have this right. I understand that there was a Michael version, and then you took it up-tempo. Is that right?

Mr. INGRAM: No.

MARTIN: No, all right. Well, good, correct the record.

Mr. INGRAM: This "P.Y.T." comes from Quincy Jones, coming back with - he's married to Peggy Lipton, and her lingerie said pretty young things. So Quincy had the title "Pretty Young Thing: Tender Loving Care," and he put a lot of writers on it. And when I came up to his house, I had a track, and I had some of the lyrics, and this is what he heard.

Mr. INGRAM: (Singing) Where did you come from, baby? Oh, won't you take me there right away? Won't you, baby? (Unintelligible). I wanna love you, pretty young…

Mr. INGRAM: Quincy said, we're cutting this tomorrow, just like that.

(Soundbite of laughter)

MARTIN: Well break it down, break it down.

Mr. INGRAM: Because he had the track. I had the track, and I was, you know, I was going to have all the lyrics.

(Soundbite of song, "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)")

Mr. MICHAEL JACKSON (Musician): (Singing) I want to love you, pretty young thing. You'll need some loving, tender loving care, and I will take you there. Nothing can stop this burning desire to be with you, gotta get to you, baby. Won't you come, it's emergency. Cool my fire, yearning, honey come set me free. Don't you know now is the perfect time. We can dim the lights just to make it right. In the night, hit the loving spot. I'll give you all that I've got. I want to love you, pretty young thing…

MARTIN: How's it sound. Still sound good?

Mr. INGRAM: Oh yeah.

MARTIN: All right. So what was it like? Were you there when it was recorded?

Mr. INGRAM: Yeah. Michael Jackson - I've seen a lot of people. I've played organ behind Ray Charles and a lot of other people and on records and stuff, but the thing is, Michael Jackson was in the studio singing, and he was dancing at the same time while he was singing. Now me, I may bob a little bit, but I'm holding all my breath for the microphone, and I've never seen nobody, and Michael came out of the studio sweating. He said, James, am I singing all right? I said man, you killed it. You can sing however you want to sing it.

MARTIN: He was really full-out dancing. He wasn't just, like, la-la-la.

Mr. INGRAM: No, this is - Michael Jackson is the best artist alive on the earth not unless somebody hasn't been discovered yet, but there's nobody that could do what he does.

MARTIN: What do you think made him so special?

Mr. INGRAM: Well you know, there's some things that you're born with. It's a gift. Those are gifts from God. It was already in him when he was born. When he came out of the womb, that was part of his package. That was part of his DNA.

MARTIN: So what's your favorite Michael Jackson song, other than "Pretty Young Thing"?

Mr. INGRAM: That's a hard question. I don't have like a favorite song. I just love his body of work. I can't pinpoint anything. You know, of course "P.Y.T." is my favorite because that's the one that paid me - oh my God.

(Soundbite of laughter)

MARTIN: Still is, I hope.

Mr. INGRAM: Yes, indeed.

MARTIN: What do you think - and I hate to ask you this, but when you think of Michael, I know it's hard to believe that he is gone, but what are you going to think about when you think about Michael Jackson?

Mr. INGRAM: Well see, I had a relationship with Michael, and so I just loved him as a human being, an entertainer and even when he was in Bahrain, he called me, and he said James, look, because of the Katrina thing, I want to do another "We Are the World" because Michael and Lionel Ritchie wrote "We Are the World."

And so I said, okay, no problem, man, whatever you need. And so we went in the studio with LaVert, Shirley Caesar, Snoop Dogg and a whole lot of people, and we did this thing. But it never came out because of the politics. I guess somebody wanted Michael to sign with them before they released - you know, all that kind of stuff. You know, so he was my brother and a friend, and he always looked up to me in terms of as his older brother.

MARTIN: Thank you for that. James Ingram is a singer and composer and songwriter. He is credited as co-author, with Quincy Jones, of "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)". It's on the King of Pop's "Thriller" album, and he was kind enough to join us from NPR West. Mr. Ingram, thank you so much for speaking with us.

Mr. INGRAM: You're welcome.

(Soundbite of song, "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)")

Mr. JACKSON: (Singing) Where did you come from, baby, and ooh, won't you take me there, right away, won't you, baby? Tendoroni you've got to be…
