Michael - The Great Album Debate

little note: I read Joe Vogel's Earth Song book yesterday. He interviewed a lot of people. One of them was Bruce Swedien. He says in normal fashion Michael recorded the vocals in dark and he hated the light when recording . so I do not expect any video whatsoever.

^^ Earth Song book? I've never heard of it

I didn't think there'd be a video...

EDIT: nvm, just reading up on that book now...

It's not a book , sorry my bad, it's like a 50 page essay on Earth song

This comes from Hastings Law Journal and it's about speaker identification. The relevant part is that it quotes a lot of research about humans ability (or inability) to recognize voices. This is the summary
You're sure it's not from "Law & Order"? :D

1. Voice recognition software is not as reliable as DNA or finger print analysis

Michael.....I miss you...so much...usually I'm great at expressing how I feel, but with you, I fall short....

You are a true miracle to me ....why did you have to go?

Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
There’s always one reason
To feel not good enough
And it’s hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
Oh beautiful release
Memory seeps from my veins
Let me be empty
And weightless and maybe
I’ll find some peace tonight

In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there

So tired of the straight line
And everywhere you turn
There’s vultures and thieves at your back
And the storm keeps on twisting
You keep on building the lie
That you make up for all that you lack
It don’t make no difference
Escaping one last time
It’s easier to believe in this sweet madness oh
This glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here

Here's one of my favourite songs. I don't know who it's sung by, but the melody was taken from one of my favourite, and one of the best-written, most emotionally attaching video game franchises of all time: The MOTHER trilogy. The lyrics are extremely poignant and really speaks to me for this day:

Umm, this thread needs some stimulation :D

Ok, it's not a secret that everyone already knows that I've been a Cascio-lead-vocals doubter.

Until Samhabib hadn't pointed out the poorly written lyrics on the Cascio songs, I hadn't paid close attention to them actually. Well, I did realize that the lyrics on Monster were awfully stereotyped and that Keep Your Head Up's topic isn't very clear (what is it about actually? Ecology? Social cases?), not to mention how poorly they were written.

Parallelly, when we debate about the vocals on the Cascio tracks, some evoked the song "SHOUT" and how different the voice sounded. As far as I am concerned, the voice on SHOUT never raised a single eyebrow of doubt on my face.

Well, I thought, if people like comparing vocals with SHOUT, why don't they compare lyrics as well? Let's see the beauty of the lyrics on "SHOUT" compared to the randomly stereotypedly written lyrics on the Cascio tracks.

SHOUT

SHOUT

Verse
Ignorance of people purchasing diamonds and necklaces,
And barely able to keep the payments up on their lessons,
And enrolled in a class and don't know who the professor is,
How low people go for the dough and make a mess of things,
Kids are murdering other kids for the fun of it,
Instead of using their mind or their fist, they put a gun in it
Wanna be a part of a clique, don't know who's running it,
Tragedy on top of tragedy you know it's killing me.
So many people in agony, this shouldn't have to be,
Too busy focusing on ourselves and not His Majesty,
There has to be some type of change for this day and age,
We gotta rearrange and flip the page,
Living encaged like animals and cannibals,
Eating each other alive just to survive the nine to five,
Every single day is trouble while we struggle and strive
Peace of mind's so hard to find.

Chorus
I wanna shout, throw my hands up and shout
What's this madness all about
All this makes me wanna shout
You know it makes me wanna shout,
Throw my hands up and shout
What's this madness all about
All this makes me wanna shout, c'mon now

Verse 2
Problems, complications and accusations
Dividing the nations and races of empty faces
A war is taking place.
No substitution for restitution, the only solution for peace
Is increasing the height of your spirituality.
Masses of minds are shrouded, clouded visions
Deceptions and indecision, no faith or religion, how we're living.
The clock is ticking, the end is coming, there'll be no warning,
But we live to see the dawn.

Bridge
How can we preach, when all we make this world to be
Is a living hell torturing our minds.
We all must unite, to turn darkness to light,
And the love in our hearts will shine.

Verse 3
We're disconnected from love, we're disrespecting each other
Whatever happened to protecting each other
Poisoned your body and your soul for a minute of pleasure,
But the damage that you've done is gonna last forever.
Babies being born in the world already drug addicted and afflicted,
Family values are contradicted.
Ashes to ashes and dust to dust, the pressure is building and I've had enough.

Chorus...

Not a single line of SHOUT can be compared to the lyrics on the Cascio tracks, because each line in SHOUT is as strong as steel. And when I think of sucking air from under me and stabbing in the back as a matter of fact, I just don't see neither the same quality nor style, nor would I imagine that the same person sang those songs at all.

^^ A lot of people say the lyrics of the songs don't matter, it's the vocals that we're doubting....But I see both issues as equally important. MJ was not just a singer, or a dancer, but he was also a strong songwriter...His music is all encompassing....It's the totality of a story that he tells...Every single aspect of the song is strong...It's an experience to listen to a Michael Jackson song. No matter what, even if I don't like the song, I can NEVER say a song of his is mediocre....I feel that the Cascio songs are not only sung by someone else, but his unique lyrics and way he writes music are missing. I don't feel any of his magic in these songs and it's not only because I think they're sung by someone else, it's because everything that makes Michael Jackson a genius musician is missing from these songs...

It's not an issue of whether it's important or not, it's simply irrelevant to the vocals.

but his unique lyrics and way he writes music are missing.

because as we know these are songs written by Cascio & Porte for Porte and later edited by Michael. Obviously his unique way would be missing.

in short Cascio could be a crappy songwriter but it doesn't prove any evidence in regards to Michael is the one singing them or not.

^^ Well I do think they're relevant to his discography and musical integrity...These songs are on an album with his name on it...Unfortunately, to me, they are eons away from representing his talent....I don't feel any input from him at all on these songs...Above all, it's the vocals, yes, but I think it's important to discuss all of it...

I agree that lyrics in regards of vocals are irrelevant, but the question remains, would someone who sang such lyrics as heard and seen in SHOUT would accept to sing the lyrics such as:

"stabbed in the back as a matter of fact" or "suck the air from behind me"?

It is as if an excellent actor accepted, after decades of quality roles, to play a role in a crappy movie produced by searching-for-the-right-button amateur producer and director. I just couldn't imagine Dean Martin starring in "Dune".
