A previously unseen tour film made by Michael Jackson at the height of his career is to be auctioned in London later this month. It is expected to spark a multimillion pound bidding war among those eager to hoover up the remaining scraps of archive material relating to the deceased pop star.

The film, seen for the first time by The Independent, was recorded in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1993 on Jackson's mammoth Dangerous world tour and produced using state-of-the-art equipment. But the project was dropped soon after the film was completed, as Jackson was understood to be unhappy with the finished product. He sacked the entire crew and the film was scrapped and never released.

The sole copy ended up not with his estate or his record company, but, curiously, with his personal driver, a Brazilian chauffeur.

The driver, who wishes to remain anonymous, has chauffeured famous names ranging from Margaret Thatcher to Axl Rose and from Madonna to George Bush Snr. But in 1993, he worked for Michael Jackson, at a time when the star was at the height of his powers.

The Pepsi-Cola sponsored world tour was one of the biggest in history and was performed to more than 3.5 million people over 69 performances, but ended in cancellations when Jackson complained of ill-health.

The driver says the singer gave him the VHS tape as "a reward or a bonus" for his "transportation services" after he had helped provide transport when Jackson performed in Sao Paulo, Brazil, a few weeks earlier.

Since then, he says, he kept the fact he had the tape to himself – until Jackson's death in 2009, when he disclosed proof of ownership by leaking a very short clip on to YouTube. He was immediately stopped by Jackson's record label and lawyers from the singer's estate, each of whom claimed exclusive rights, and the clip was removed.

But US law dictates the right of possession of a gift, giving the owner the right to sell or transfer to third parties, but not to distribute copies.

The existence of the tape has become a subject of legend among Jackson fans and speculation has been rife as to its whereabouts. The two-hour film, which also features behind-the-scenes images, contains footage of Jordy Chandler – the boy at the centre of the child-abuse scandal that dogged Jackson.

Appetite for anything Jackson-related has far from diminished since his death and the tape is expected to sell for more than its £4m reserve when it goes under the hammer on 26 November. Ted Owen, CEO of Fame Bureau auctioneers, where the tape will be sold, said: "I'm very excited that this tape is finally going to be seen because of its quality, the amount of cameras used and the sheer closeness you are to the performance when watching it."

The world tour, Jackson's second, ran from June 1992 to November 1993 but ended abruptly when he was taken to hospital. He later became dependent on painkillers, having suffered from dehydration, migraines and injuries.

Jackson died in June 2009 after receiving a fatal overdose of prescription drugs, including the powerful anaesthetic propofol.

Earlier this month his personal doctor, Conrad Murray, who administered the drugs, was convicted of the involuntary manslaughter of the singer.

Well Im sure if the Estate wants it they have the ability to out bid any interested.
I still cant belive MJ woudl just give it away. after many people worked on it.
Seems he woudl at least take it and keep it in his archives.

That's where I live! lol
Oh, 4M? wow that's a lot of money.
How lucky that chauffeur was? Like, really, he was just driving him around and he got out of nowhere a unique tape that's also gonna make him multimillionaire. Ah, life

Why would the estate want to bid on it? This is a copy of the nocturne masters (shot on every show) of which the estate have the masters.

This guy already tried selling copies on a web site which the estate rapidly closed down.

It seems unlikely that this auction will be completed. But the auction house is going to get a ton of free publicity even if the tape is withdrawn - win/win for them.

Thank you for clarifying that, It also states by law he can sell his personal tape but just not make copys and sell.
so I wonder if he can selll it at this auction right out.

Estate should bid on this. Because whoever else get it, it would never be released. But I don't think that MJ gave the only copy to that guy. I'm sure he had another copy in his vaults.

This guy needs a reality check. No one is going to pay 4m for a vhs with concert, more like 4k, ok maybe 40k if he's lucky.

I doubt after spending a ton of $$ filming this concert, MJ would give away the only copy. And why is this ONLY copy on VHS...instead of master film rolls?

SCAM. Since June 25th, MJ has been objectified like no one else. It took YEARS to get to this point for Elvis, but MJ...smdh...it happened the moment he died.

This is a way way over exaggerated amount that they feel it will fetch given you cant do anything with it, anyone wanting to spend 4 mill for a tape that will end up on the net anyway must need their heads testing,

I know for a fact this person tried to get the estate to buy it or do something with them only for them to turn him away with a clause you try to make money from this we will shut you down,

This guy also contacted me directly to try to see if I could raise donations to pay him for it and he would let us have it.

Does that sound like someone who will make 4 mill from it, erm nope.

I guess he thought he was on to a good thing with a big pay off at the end. Seems he was sadly mistaken. lol

I really dont believe Michael would give away the only tape..........just doesnt seem right.

Its been on utube for years already. it was just shown on a uk news report as footage mj never wanted ppl to see yet its been available for ages

Haha, LOL! This is the same guy who was trying to sell this for $250,000 minimum last year and whose site was shut down by The Michael Jackson Estate.

If the footage was not upto Michael's expectation and he did not want it to be seen by the world, then his wish should be respected. And I'm sure it was never a gift to the driver-not because Mike wouldn't reward a driver (he is known to be very friendly, polite, gracious even with temporary staff, reward them with personal items they asked for and tip them lavishly), but he would never have gifted this footage, because that would mean it could end up being auctioned, sold or whatever and be circulated around the world-something which Mike did not want!

Ahhh this has scam written all over it, but who came in this thread all excited with hope for a new Michael movie?

This got me thinking about that novel supposedly written by Michael. Wonder what happened to that?

If I spent 4m I would kill myself. Not the best quality and not worth it. Total scam.

Is there something special about this specific show during the Dangerous Tour? Aren't there many other Dangerous recordings? What makes this one so special?

Has this tape really been the subject of legend - i've never heard of it - does this make me a bad fan? What a rubbish article, how will anyone pay £4m for something that they can't legally commerically use - apart from maybe howard mann. And of course they had to get the name jordan chandler name in there somehow. Buenos aires wd be autumn 93 in the second leg (wouldn't it?) - jc would be safely at home in LA singing like a canary, drawing pictures of tall buildingswith stick figures falling out of windows.
