Jackson doctor seeking indigent status for appeal

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The doctor convicted of causing Michael Jackson's death is asking a court to appoint a publicly funded attorney to handle his appeal.

Conrad Murray filed an amended notice of appeal in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday stating that he is indigent and unable to pay for an appellate lawyer to try to overturn his involuntary manslaughter conviction.

The 58-year-old cardiologist intends to appeal his conviction but does not yet have an attorney who can prepare briefs and argue his case before the California 2nd District Court of Appeal.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that felony convicts have a constitutional right to assistance of counsel.

A jury convicted Murray last month in connection with Jackson's June 2009 death.

Murray is expected to serve roughly two years in jail.

thats good he is indigent,,,that means he has NO money,,,GOOD just the way it SHOULD be!!

OH GOOD, a public defender. They will do the least amount of effort unless they find something that was overlooked at the trail but I serious doubt it.

What a shame. even murray can get some ambulance chasing lawyer to rep him

Murray made his bed when he chose Michael's money over his ethics as a doctor. And he should be made to lie in it now. I'm so sick and tired of hearing excuses for why he couldn't say no to Michael or quit. That was nobody's fault but Murray's. And he should have to deal with it. Period. This is all just my opinion.

(Reuters) - Michael Jackson's doctor on Tuesday asked for a publicly-funded lawyer to handle his appeal on a manslaughter conviction in the pop star's death, saying he could not afford to pay for one himself.

Dr. Conrad Murray, serving a four-year jail term for the involuntary manslaughter of Jackson in 2009, filed papers with Los Angeles Superior Court saying he was unable to fund his legal help any longer.

"The defendant is indigent and respectfully requests the appointment of counsel on appeal," the court papers said.

Murray said he wished to appeal both his conviction and his sentence but so far has not filed formal papers with the California appeals court.

The 58-year-old cardiologist had hired two lawyers for his six-week trial, but he was convicted in November of involuntary manslaughter, or gross negligence, after admitting he gave the "Thriller" singer nightly doses of the surgical anesthetic propofol to help Jackson sleep.

Jackson, 50, died on June 25, 2009 of an overdose of propofol and sedatives, just weeks before a series of planned comeback concerts.

That's not completely true, it depends on the public defender. Just because you get a high price lawyer doesn't automatically mean they defend you better than a public defender. Lawyers are people, so they are not all cut from the same cloth.

I cant see a thread about this but i post it here then, in holland there was a news article that stated:

conrad murray feels treated like hannibal lectar, says his laywer. he made a mistake, and being punished as a mass murderer. Its not because he was suicidal, he isnt (anymore).

The cops say: conrad murray get extra security because he is well known and we wanna keep him safe

Thats what it said.

Murray would have the money and Michael would be alive even if propofol was given, if dr had used safety equiment with alarm, monitoring as he should, called for help and did proper cpr at once when it was needed.

Exactly. Murray's appeal should be put on the skids right there because he was the person who should have done the right things in keeping Michael alive. No other doctors were to blame for this, in my opinion.

Maybe this is the place where Murray learned about anesteshia

http://www.care2.com/causes/citations-issued-at-harvard-medical-center-after-animals-death.html

The New England Primate Research Center (NEPRC), a Harvard Medical School facility in Southborough, MA, has just received five citations from the USDA, following an inspection in July prompted by reports of unauthorized experiments.
One of the citations was issued for the death of a primate who had to be euthanized after being given an overdose of anesthesia, which led to renal failure.
NEPRC was cited for poor training and instruction in the proper use of anesthetics and tranquilizers,,,
