All music lovers have at least one album in their collection that they know all the words to (including all the backup vocals), just like movie buffs have that one DVD that seems to spend more time in the player than it does in its case. It’s these titles that initiate fans into that special group that loves that content to death. While these titles aren’t always traditional cult classics, their followings have become cult-like over time. Here, we explore just a handful of these titles and how they’ve continue to engage us well years after their initial release.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller isn’t just for Halloween—music fans continue to buy an average of 3,000 albums a week, even 30 years after its original release. These titles aren’t just timeless because of the legacies and personalities of the artists behind them. They’re legendary compositions that people continue to enjoy many years later. They’ve also gone on to become some of the best-selling albums of the past two decades.

This is just an excerpt.

Thriller is the 170th best selling album of the year so far. 31 years after its release...

2013 YTD ALBUMS USA

#170 Thriller Michael Jackson 131,000 copies sold

That's 150,000-160,000 copies a year... woah

These days an album that sells 250-300k can be Nr 1. Of course, that's in a week, but these new albums usually drop like a brick after one or two weeks, so most of their sales comes from first week sales. So considering that Thriller seling 150-160k in a year is very impressive. Without promotion, without anything.

This may sound silly but when I read these kinds of things I feel emotional. In a good way.

Great news. Reminds me of that thread where some felt Thriller did not sell 1 billion copies!!!

This news makes me feel like buying the album as Christmas gifts this year.

I own this album in every format: vinyl, cassette tape, CD and digital. I've bought it numerous times to replace copies I let friends and relatives "borrow" and they never returned, LOL! It's not an exaggeration to say I've bought that ONE release over 40 times. The only copy I didn't buy was the first one, which was a gift to me from my late sister, Phyllis.

i feel so proud of michael, it's an honor to be a fan of his. i'm proud i own the original thriller release, still sealed :) this will never happen again, it's.. timeless. Michael IS the greatest singer, dancer, all round artist that has ever/or will ever grace this earth. the term genius & king belong's to him. he earnt it. may he rest in peace, and his magic eternally alive through the admiration of his endless work and perfected visions for his fans, all around the world.

Very impressive for a 30 years old album. - The worlds best selling album of all time. - So many million people have the album yet still it sells!!

Michael had this beautiful gift to put music on the one and only level where no one can comes close to.
His music still sounds so fresh, it's unbelieveble.
Everytime I listen to Billie Jean, the song could be so easily made in 2013, it sounds so fresh though it's already more than 31 years old.
Same goes with PYT, Girl is Mine, Beat It, Baby Be Mine etc...
Every thing changes, from the moment that Thriller was released alot has changed; fashion, the car industry, the music industry, our age, we grow older, but everytime I listen to the Thriller or the Off the Wall album, nothing has changed. Nothing has grown old, no sound is familiar with Michael's music. It's still there, the incredible soul off the man himself flows trough the beat of his music.

Sometimes I wish I had the same age like my older cousins. Being born in the 70's and experience the Michael madness in the 80's, that would have been so awesome.
But I'm glad that Michael put his soul in to the music.
I may have missed the 80's and didn't really understand the 90's, but everytime I put the Thriller album on, the 80's are actually there, Michael is there, it's incredible that someone can let you feel your soul and his presence by making this music.

No wonder it does sell still great these times.

Pearl Jam got a #1 record with 160K a couple of weeks ago... just goes to show.
